    BEEP! BEEP! | UTSA Roadrunners

    BEEP! BEEP!

    Mudcat’s UTSA Roadrunners

    Console: PS3
Play Style: “Coach Mode” (Auto Pass)
    Rosters: OS PS3 Community
    All Difficulties: Heisman
Sliders: Pigpowered Heisman Coach Mode Sliders (OS) for starters, will adjust as needed

    Recruiting Restrictions:
3-star and below only until “recruiting upgrades” are “unlocked”. A conference championship will allow the signing of up to three in-state 4-star recruits. A second conference championship will allow up to five 4-star recruits including two from any neighboring state. A BCS bowl appearance will allow the singing of one 5-star in-state player per year. A BCS bowl win will allow up to three 5-stars per season, two of which must be in-state. In invitation to the Big XII will open up regional 4-star recruiting and a Big XII championship will unlock regional 5-star recruiting. National recruiting of 4-star and 5-star players will require a BCS title game appearance.

After a three year hiatus from the series, NCAA 14 gave me the itch to get back into it. UTSA won out over Tennessee, BC and ULL for my team choice. I wanted to start out with more of a challenge than UT or BC, and I like that UTSA is a start-up program but is located in one of the biggest cities in a hotbed recruiting state and has a ready-made venue in the Alamo Dome and a coach with name recognition (for better or worse). If Boise St. can accomplish what it has up in the middle of nowhere, what can UTSA eventually do with more favorable conditions?

Long-term goals are getting into the Big XII and winning a BCS bowl.

Team History - A Long Way In A Short Time

UTSA joins Conference USA this year despite this being only its third year of playing football. That Texas-San Antonio would field a football team was not announced until 2008. Practice began in 2010 and in 2011 the Runners played their inaugural season as a member of the FCS. 2012 brought a jump to the FBS with the WAC. The team is coached by former Miami Hurricanes head coach Larry Coker and had a deceptively successful 8-4 2012 campaign. “Deceptive” because four of the wins came against non-FBS teams and the four wins against FBS opponents came against teams which had a combined 8 wins.

Runners Grind Out 24-14 Win Over Lobos

”After the first quarter I thought that Goatse guy was going to eat our lunch” - UTSA head coach Larry Coker

The Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners have kicked off their sophomore FBS season with a 24-14 victory over the New Mexico Lobos in the ABQ. The outcome appeared in doubt, however, after a first quarter in which Lobo QB Cole Gautsche ran for 2 TD’s to stake UNM to a 14-0 lead. The UTSA defense got the best of Gautsche for the remainder of the day however, with a missed field goal representing New Nexico’s only other scoring opportunity in the final three quarters. The Runners began fighting there way back by cutting the deficit to 14-7 at the half on Eric Soza’s 19 yard strike to Marcellus Mack, and they owned the third quarter, tying the game on Soza’s 12 yard pass to Kenny Harrison and taking the lead on Sean Ianno’s 18 yard gimme. UTSA put then game away late in the fourth by driving to a 3 yard touchdown run by fullback Nate Shaw, with the drive being kept alive by a one-hand third-and-long catch by Earon Holmes a play after Soza had been sacked.

Cole Gautsche gets yanked down for a loss by Nic Johnston.

The Runners got on the board with Marcellus Mack’s 19 yard catch.

Earon Holmes' one-handed spear extended a series that ended with UTSA going up by 10 with little time left.

It probably would have been better for the Roadrunners for Okie St. to have won last week. Smarting from a season-opening loss to unranked Mississippi St. at Reliant Stadium, the Cowboys are likely to be bringing several of these to the Dome:

                              Cowboys Ride Roughshod Over Roadunners

”At least we held 'em to a field goal in the first quarter, and zero in the third.” - UTSA head coach Larry Coker

The University of Texas-San Antonio has Big XII aspirations. But to accomplish that objective, the Roadrunners are going to have to prove they can hang with Big XII teams, which is an achievement which is premature to expect in the program's second year of FBS competition and third overall. At present no one should be surprised that the Big XII South’s Oklahoma St. Cowboys, surly after last weeks upset by Mississippi St., thumped the Runners by a 41-10 margin.

UTSA actually drew first blood by marching to a field goal in the opening series, but Okie St. responded in kind. With OSU QB Clint Chelf struggling early, the first quarter ended with the score still tied at 3- something of a moral victory for the Runners. When the game’s first touchdown came on Chelf’s 44 yard strike to Tracy Moore, it was only Chelf’s second completion in 10 attempts. He went 17-of-26 after that, however, and with a 13 yard option keeper he gave Oklahoma St. a 17-3 halftime lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, at appeared that the Roadrunners might avoid a blowout, but Oklahoma St. exploded in the fourth. Moore’s second touchdown catch essentially squelched any reasonable notion of a UTSA comeback, and after Chelf’s second rushing TD (the conversion of a sack-induced fumble by Eric Soza) made the score 34-3, UTSA backup QB Tucker Carter went under center. Carter’s first series was a three and out and the second ended abruptly on its second play with a pick-six. Carter shook off the interception and drove the Runners to their only touchdown of the game, a 1 yard run by David Glasco, set up by a 53 yard reception by Earon Holmes. Glasco had the best game of any Runner, rushing for 104 yards on 19 carries.

Mike Gundy is going to be kicking himself for his unwise decision to leave Jeremy Smith in the game as the Cowboys were running out the clock. Smith suffered a pectoral tear on the final play, and is expected to miss 5-6 weeks. With Desmond Roland getting hurt in the season opener, Okie St. is already minus its top two running backs.
