    Re: 2012-2013 College Hockey Thread

    Very well written article.

I liked the part about doing 8 Best-of-3's to feed in to 2 Regionals. That would make sense and would make the NCAA's more similar to Conference Playoffs.

And bringing the Regionals back to campuses makes TOO much sense. The guys who made it to the NCAA's deserve to be rewarded with a great crowd and they're just not getting that right now.

There were a couple things I disagreed with however.

First, DQing any Team that plays >60% of their OOC Games at Home would be infinitely stupid. Your just asking for MASSIVE headaches, like top Teams taking weak OOC Road opponents just to fill the requirements; and should they LOSE a few of those "throwaway" Games now the RPI system is messed. That, and it'd be financially unfeasible for smaller programs to keep up with. I get wanting to balance it out so the top programs can't just camp in their rink and have their way OOC, but there are better ways.

Secondly, taking away shot-blocking. How, how does this even get brought up at this level of play as a legitimate option? They remove the ability to block shots and the Defense is out.

      Re: 2012-2013 College Hockey Thread

Zach Stepan (Who I believe is Derek's cousin, not brother) decomitted from Ohio State and has decided to go to Mankato.

From what I have heard Zach wanted to be a Gopher, but OSU was not going to release him to another B1G school.

Would have been a nice get for the Gophers, and I am kind of bummed he didn't end up here. However, I am happy he went to a Minnesota school, at least. He should be a very good player for a Mankato team that should definitely be a top contender in the new WCHA.

Just casted my vote for Drew LeBlanc as the ESPY male college athlete of the year.

Up against Trey Burke and Johnny Manziel, I'll be surprised if Drew gets 5% of the vote, lol. Gotta support the Minnesota boys, though!

B1G's got shootouts, too. I was bummed. I was hoping for 10 minutes of 4-on-4. Should have known they wouldn't be able to resist the draw of the super awesome exciting shootouts

I'm pumped for Shootouts in College Hockey!

They're exciting, allow teams to showcase their best players, and get rid of Ties.

I seriously don't get the hate Shootouts get. Like, the teams have played 65 minutes of Hockey and have proven to be equals so they both get a Point; now the Game is in the hands of your Goalie and best Skaters to see who gets the extra Point and the Win. Like I said before, it's exciting and gets rid of terrible ties.

Because ties are a valid result of a hockey game and a 3-round shootout is not hockey. It's like stopping a baseball game after 10 innings and having a home run derby to decide the winner.

                        ^Yep.

Just kind of a silly way to end a game. I get why the NHL did it, but college hockey does not need it.

It separates two teams, just for the sake of having a "winner", when 65 minutes of play showed us that they are pretty much even, and both deserve a point.

Except ties SHOULDN'T be a valid result, IMO. It takes away from the excitement of a Game if it ends in a tie. It's like "Oh, we're done. Time's up. No one wins." Such a shame for a Game to end that way. In my honest opinion, there should always be a winner.

And how is it not Hockey? Shooters try to score, Goalies make Saves; I get that you aren't having the full teams playing 5-on-5/4-on-4 anymore, but that doesn't make it any less Hockey.

Also, both teams get a Point still if it hits the Shootout; they are equals and both deserved the Point, now let's see who wants it more and decide the winner.

I really like it for College Hockey because it'll lead to teams really earning their spots in the Conference standings when they have to win their Games to keep up.

I guess if you're watching a game for the sole purpose of finding out the result, ties take away the excitement. But if your only reason for watching a game is just to get to the end to find out the result, why watch it at all?

Some of the most exciting games I have attended over the last 4 years have ended in ties.

The main reasons I'm against ties in the NHL are: a.) too many coaches are too timid to go for the full 2 points and play for a tie, and b.) the exorbitant ticket prices (at least in some markets). If neither is a problem in the NCAA (I don't know), then I don't see a problem with keeping ties.

Most people in the NHL boards know I've hammered on a 2-2-1-0 points structure forever, but here's another idea: start OT 3-on-3 (20 minute periods) and keep going until there's a winner. I know unlimited OT is usually pooh-poohed for reasons of time (as I watch the end of yet another 4+ hour Yankees/Red Sox game) and potential injury, but wouldn't 3-on-3 produce a quick winner 9 times out of 10?

I don't watch solely for the result, I watch because the game is exciting and I love every aspect of it. It just hurts a game a bit, for me, for it to be great back and forth and then... just done, no finish.

I'll be honest, I definitely enjoyed the one tie the Huskies had last Season. But that was because, in addition to being a GREAT game, it clinched a 3 Point Weekend for us.
