OS Community: You make the call

    Scenario:

Online dynasty, human vs. human. I'm up by 7 with 2:47 left in the game. Facing 4th and 1 from my own 48, I elect to go for it. My opponent quits the game. He claims it's not sim to go for 4th and 1 from your own 48. I say he's crazy and/or covering for the fact that he rage quit in an online dynasty game.

    1. Who's right?

    and

    2. Since "sim" is supposed to emulate real life, does anyone have any college football stats that show how often teams go for it on 4th and 1 from their own 48?

    Thanks in advance.

I would have gone for it too. My defense is usually bad so Id rather try to put the game away then punt and watch my opponent drive down the field and then go for 2 and win

Personal preference, i would have punted. Not saying that you are wrong though. I do not believe what you did was cheese or in anyway justified him quitting.
Like i said, personally i would have punted and hoped to pin them deep, rather than risk not getting it and them only having half a field to go. Especially with them only needing a field goal to win. If the lead was 3 or more points, then i would have probably gone for it.
Either way, i dont see you as being in the wrong. He took the field, he should be mad at himself for not stopping it.

It really depends on how the game has gone to that point. If "up by 7" means 10-3, you absolutely punt the ball and trust your D to make another stop; on the flip side, if the score is 42-49, go for it because both offenses are styling all over the field.

It also depends on what others in in your OD have done in similar situations. If they usually punt, you probably should have punted.

TL;DR There's no right or wrong answer here. It's all about who can cry like a toddler about a video game the longest.

I disagree. Especially if your D is doing great you go for it and get the 1 yard and seal the game. You have nothing to lose because if you go for it and fail, your D that has dominated all game and held the offense to only 3 points the whole game takes the field.

Fair point, I hadn't thought about it that way.

It's definitely more of a douche move than punting, but it's not cheesing, glitching, and it certainly doesn't break the unwritten laws of sim play.

Depends on if you trust how you've been calling your defense all game. If I've been calling a good defensive game, I'd have probably punted but make no mistake, I don't think you were wrong to go for it. You're playing to win, but it's not like you're being cheap. If he knew it was coming, he could've called something to stop your play. Bottom line is he rage-quit, that's the only thing I see wrong.

Last year Bill O'Brien went for a couple of 4th and 2 and 3's from the 45 yardline.

Eh I would have gone for it, but I make it known early one that I'm going for all 4th and less than 3 at the 45 or better and live with the consequences. I very rarely if ever punt. Sounds like he just got mad that he couldn't stop you...sometimes you gotta take your L as a man and come back next time

For me, it also depends on how my offense has been playing lately. If my offensive line is shoving his guys all over the field, then I'll go for it. If not, I'll be much more hesitant and I'll probably punt it away.

I'm with the rest of the posters in this thread. It sounds to me like he's mad that he lost, and he's just trying to find an excuse for his loss. If I gave up the yard on 4th and 1, I'd be more angry at my defense than at my opponent.

Picture it.....Illinois at #1 Ohio State back in the fall of 2007. Illinois with the ball up by seven at their own 40ish yard line with roughly 7 minutes to go. It's 4th and 1 and Illini QB Juice Williams convinces then coach, Ron Zook to go for it. They did and Williams ran for the first down, and the Illini won the game 28-21.

I'm an illini country so it's hard not to root for them as well haha
You are in the right. That guy was just butt hurt that he lost.

paul Johnson often goes for it on 4th down, Chip kelly usually went for 2 pt conversions after the first score, so yea, he's a b...h

What you did was not wrong. The only way I can feel his pain is because the run game is so hard to stop in this years game so he was probably just annoyed.

This is what I was thinking

Stopping a good user can be tough as hell in this game. I guess if you feel you're on their side of the 50 and get the 4th down you've earned the punt. Not saying he was right or he was wrong. Dude just lost his cool.

                              My other thoughts:

Comparing to real life is flawed. I think it's easier to get a 4th and 1 in the game than in real life, probably much more so actually. It's like when slider guys say "ignore score, just look at total plays," we'll that flawed too because there aren't a realistic number of total punts to go with those realistic total plays so offense is too high in the game. Real life comparisons only work if the game has a true sim engine, like The Show. I mean, if we wanna talk real life, last year I saw the Patriots punt from their opponents 37 yard line. True story. So, throw that out the window.

A lot of leagues adapt a "you know what sim is, I shouldn't have to tell you" policy but I think that leaves room for these disagreements. The game has flaws and people have different opinions, I think leagues need the most guidelines they can possibly think of for situations like this. There should be set "yes go for it" "yes you punt" restrictions/rules.

                              Anyway.

I don't think you're the most cheese guy ever, or anything like that. I understand why he was frustrated though. I understand your reasoning
