int turn into a safety?
I get the int at the one yard line but the momentum of the cb is still falling back into the endzone and the wr tackles me. Safety and I have to punt the ball back to them SMH.Tags: None -
Re: int turn into a safety?
What is the official rule on that anyway? It isn't something that happens every day. Any evidence of it happening in real life, and what the right call is?Comment

Re: int turn into a safety?
Isn't that what should happen?
Defender catches ball in field of play, falls/gets tackled into endzone - it's a safety.
EDIT - Rule is:
Exceptions:
It is not a safety:
(1) If a forward pass from behind the line of scrimmage is incomplete in the end zone.
(2) If a defensive player, in the field of play, intercepts a pass or catches or recovers a fumble, backward pass, scrimmage kick, free kick, or fair catch kick, and his original momentum carries him into his end zone where the ball is declared dead in his team’s possession. The ball belongs to the defensive team at the spot where the player’s foot or other body part touched the ground to establish possession.
So in this case, both of the first two posters said they were tackled in, thus it's correctly being called a safety. If the defender goes in on his own, the ball is moved to the spot of established possession. Unless I'm misreading it.Last edited by SmashMan; 08-28-2013, 07:48 PM.Comment

If momentum is falling back then yes, its placed at the 1.

Re: int turn into a safety?
It looks like it's a backwards pass so it's a fumble out of the endzone which results in a safety.http://www.easports.com/media/play/video/164137153

Re: int turn into a safety?
In the case of an interception, ball should be placed at the 1, per either forward progress or the rule SmashMan posted.
In the case of a fumble, prior to the 2001 season it was a safety, but the rule was changed in 2001 to treat fumbles the same as interceptions.Conference Realignment Guides: NCAA 12-14, College Football 25Comment

Re: int turn into a safety?
Yup, either a touchback or the ball is on the 1. If you caught the ball at the 1 and fell into the end zone, forward progress puts you at the 1.Comment
