Injuries do trigger an auto-fight for the person who made the hit, though.

I find it humorous that if the auto-fight pops up, you can escape it by running away from the scene of the crime. Once you skate far enough away from the incident, the "press Y to fight" icon disappears.
Funny you say that because the first game I played as a defenseman, I laid a guy out in the slot (don't know what I was thinking) and got a 5 min penalty and game misconduct. It was my first hit with my d-man.

They have to add instigator penalties and the option to turtle to keep your guy from getting injured. It's funny when you hear the commentators talk about the guy instigating the fight, yet there is no penalty?
