Worth the Purchase?
I have NHL 12 for the PS3 and have been looking into getting 14. Is it worth, the money, should I maybe look at 13, or should I stick with 12?Tags: None -

Re: Worth the Purchase?
NHL 13 was probably the first worthwhile upgrade in a long while. The new skating engine is a huge improvement in itself. IMHO NHL 14 is less of an upgrade over NHL 13. So I'd suggest if you can get your hands on either NHL 13 or 14 then you'd notice a big difference from NHL 12.
Personally I'm sticking with NHL 13 because I don't think NHL 14 is a big enough leap to justify the money. I'm going to wait until NHL 15 or 16 now on the next gen. Plus, with all of the newly found editing capabilities for NHL 13 and 14, I think NHL 13 will keep me going for a long while yet (although if this were to sway you between NHL 13 or 14, I suspect NHL 14 will be better supported editing-wise because that's where many of the users are concentrating). Although I expect NHL 12 can equally be edited using these tools.Webmaster of The Blue Line - Your #1 resource and forums for NHL Eastside Hockey Manager & Franchise Hockey Manager - http://www.ehmtheblueline.comComment

Re: Worth the Purchase?
I think it is. The skating engine that was re-done in 13 has been fine-tuned in 14. Hitting with the L-stick was a nice touch and the new one-touch dekes are also an improvement over the old style. Fighting is a lot better than the first-person view we had for years.
There's still some legacy issues but I think 14 is worth a purchase.Currently Playing:

Re: Worth the Purchase?
I think NHL 14 is worth it myself, been improvements since 13 for sure plus you get the new division and conference re-aligment. With the right slider tweaks you can get a very competitive game again and again, if your patient and don't just give up after 1 game NHL 14 can be very enjoyable.Comment

Re: Worth the Purchase?
Thanks for your input guys. As of right now I'm leaning towards getting 14. If I would have had 13, I would have stuck with that, but so far it seems likes it's worth the upgrade since 12 was the last edition I had.Comment

Re: Worth the Purchase?
I would say yes and no. It really depend on your spirit toward the game itself. I would say if you're looking for ground breaking presentation, huge amount of improvements all over the place and a new gameplay, then stick with NHL 12.
If you're looking for a better game overall than NHL 12, a more normal (even if it's not perfect) skating engine, hitting and few more little things, then you should give it a try.
If you can excuse EA for their inhability to deliver a product that we know could be that high but their happy to be just there, then NHL 14 should answer your need for a game of hockey.
Is it worth 60$, no. Is it worth playing, yes, as long you aren't so mad at the game from previous year that you can't see the goods in a game that is just that, good, no more."Ice hockey is a form of disorderly conduct in which the score is kept." - Doug LarsonComment

Re: Worth the Purchase?
I had 13 and played it a lot. Got 14 on release and despite my limited time to play, I'm really enjoying it. A lot of that has to do with the sliders, got it right on the limit of winning when I play well and losing if I don't. Just making a competitive, challenging game I think is more important than a lot of new features. 13 or 14, if you can make sure you're being challenged, I think the games are worth having.
The potential issue is a bit of a bummer, with so many guys dropping to red for potential. Not sure if they are going to patch it, but I'm still playing despite it.Comment

Re: Worth the Purchase?
I got frustrated last year with BaGM AI so went with BeAPro rookie, and got demoted as the top nhl scorer my 2nd season. so created a player and did BeAPro with my created player and there was some ridiculous objective I didn't complete so I was demoted to 3rd line and off the PP and PK even though I was top 3 in scoring.
I've been reading through a bit here, but haven't seen much about BeAPro. I like how the penalties have sorta been fixed and the other stuff can be adjusted with slider fixes. but are there still issues in that mode and BeAGM? i'd like to hear more before I pick up a copy of nhl 14.
madden won't do it for me since it's still just as bad as last years, and with all the problems nhl 13 had, it still kept me playing for a good amount of time especially through a lockout season. i'm hoping there were at least a few improvements this yearComment

Wish I knew...it's EAtheir coding is a mess and product is beta caliber at best. What's worse is I know a guy who tested for them and he knew be a gm was trash.Comment
