Great Game! - Lots of Penalties!

    Hey Guys,

I just played the first game of the season with San Jose. I have seen a lot of concern on the boards here about a lack of penalties in this game. I have also seen some people assert that you shouldn't touch the penalties sliders in the CPU AI section. Well this is very true. I have also heard a lot of complaints about "catch-up logic" and I have to say that I think I may have found the issue.

    Sliders

For penalties, I adjusted the main penalties slider to full, and the fighting slider to full, but left the CPU penalties and the CPU teammate penalties sliders are default.

For the "catch-up" issue, I simply turn the AI Learning slider down to one, as I don't want them to be complete morons out there! I also turn the CPU strategy adjustment slider way down low. This helped me a lot, as the third period isn't a cheese fest. Incidentally, I also focused on playing better D through out the game. I blocked passing lanes, and didn't chase after the puck carrier like a moron.

I am playing on Pro setting, and i think it is Hardcore Realism. The only other slider I changed was the goalie reaction time sliders, as this also help cut out the cheeses goals.

    San Jose versus Vancouver Canucks

Here is a sample game I just played (I am just listing general stats and penalties, not scoring):

    <html><head><meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8" /><link href="http://dynasties.operationsports.com/css/osdyn.css" rel="stylesheet" type="text/css"></head><body><table cellpadding="2" cellspacing="1" class="osdyn" width="575"><tr class="masthead"><td align="center" colspan="2">Vancouver Canucks at San Jose Sharks</td></tr><tr bgcolor="#F1F1F1"><td valign="top" width="55%"><table cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" class="osdyn" width="100%"><tr class="stathead"><td width="52%">Oct 3, 2014</td><td align="right" width="12%">1</td><td align="right" width="12%">2</td><td align="right" width="12%">3</td><td align="right" width="12%">F</td></tr><tr class="oddrow"><td>VAN (0-0-0)</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">2</td><td align="right" class="active"><b>2</b></td></tr><tr class="oddrow"><td>SJS (0-0-0)</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right">1</td><td align="right">0</td><td align="right" class="active"><b>1</b></td></tr></table><table cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" class="osdyn spacer" width="100%"><tr class="tablehead"><td colspan="2">Three Stars</td></tr><tr class="oddrow"><td align="right" valign="top" width="16%"><img src="http://dynasties.operationsports.com/images/stars/1-Star.png"></td><td width="84%"><b></b><br /></td></tr><tr class="oddrow"><td align="right" valign="top" width="16%"><img src="http://dynasties.operationsports.com/images/stars/2-Stars.png"></td><td width="84%"><b></b><br /></td></tr><tr class="oddrow"><td align="right" valign="top" width="16%"><img src="http://dynasties.operationsports.com/images/stars/3-Stars.png"></td><td width="84%"><b></b><br /></td></tr></table></td><td valign="top" width="45%"><table cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" class="osdyn" width="100%"><tr class="tablehead"><td colspan="3">Team Stats Comparison</td></tr><tr class="stathead"><td width="64%"></td><td align="right" width="18%">VAN</td><td align="right" width="18%">SJS</td></tr><tr class="oddrow"><td>Shots on Goal</td><td align="right">35</td><td align="right">27</td></tr><tr class="evenrow"><td>Hits</td><td align="right">27</td><td align="right">17</td></tr><tr class="oddrow"><td>Faceoffs Won-Lost</td><td align="right">11</td><td align="right">18</td></tr><tr class="evenrow"><td>Penalty Minutes</td><td align="right">30:00</td><td align="right">43:00</td></tr><tr class="oddrow"><td>Power Plays Converted</td><td align="right">1</td><td align="right">0</td></tr><tr class="evenrow"><td>Power Play Opportunities</td><td align="right">5</td><td align="right">4</td></tr><tr class="oddrow"><td>Time on Attack</td><td align="right">5:54</td><td align="right">7:30</td></tr></table></td></tr><tr bgcolor="#F1F1F1"><td colspan="2"><table cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1" class="osdyn" width="100%"><tr class="tablehead"><td colspan="3">Scoring Summary</td></tr><tr class="stathead"><td colspan="2">FIRST PERIOD</td></tr><tr class="oddrow"><td align="center" width="10%">SJS</td><td width="90%">Tripping (1:03) P. I also had a player sustain an injury off of a dirty hit. Needless to say Vancouver will pay during our next meeting!

Also, regarding the goalie rotation. I just turned off the setting that affects that. But I definitely think they need to patch that aspect of the game for the CPU teams.

Holy smokes... I have seen a lot of penalties in one game but wow...I too found that changing those exact sliders to what you have is perfect except I play on allstar and I find way more variety of scoring...

The problem is with BeAGM mode though. It seems like in Season you are seeing penalties called a lot more than in BeAGM.

Re: Great Game! - Lots of Penalties!

I'm not trying to be a downer here but those penalty numbers don't mean that much really.

The roughing and fighting penalties is triggered by the player themselves.
Fighting penatly occur if you, well... fight, and will equal two penalties.

                Roughing can easily be triggered by;
In a situation infront of the goalie, when the play is stopped, the defender usually grabs the forward, and go into their little manly dance. If you as a forward presses L1/LB, at that point the player will separate, and 9 out of ten times the defender will start pushing and showing. If the post-whistle rules are set to "Authentic" you will get a penalty most of the times.

I managed to lure the CPU into 5 penalties in one period like that. It's like cheating.

So not counting the fighting or roughing penalties, the actual penalties (in game) are 4 for SJS and VAN 3, which is allright, but nothing extreme.

Re: Great Game! - Lots of Penalties!

                  1. This is a game in Be a GM mode, and not Season mode.

                  2. Some the fights were triggered by me, but most of the aggression I was seeing was from the CPU. The CPU was trying to start fights, some I ignored as I wanted to get on with the game. The Charging, Goaltender Interference, and Interference calls were not triggered. I will be honest here, I was actually taken aback by the level of aggression I was seeing. The CPU was throwing hits and checks and making it quite a challenge. Incidentally this just furthers my hatred of the Canucks...

As a follow up, in my second game which was against Phoenix, the hitting continued and there were penalties. The penalties primarily came in the 2nd period, which I have been noticing in other BAGM games I have going. Again, I will post my settings this evening, probably around 8:30 p.m. EST.

Re: Great Game! - Lots of Penalties!

Well again, you have turned up fighting to the max, and so you got 8 fighting penalties, and 2 roughing penalties (I'm guessing being caused by a declined fight or aggro dance).

That leaves 8 "normal" penalties (tripping, charging, interference etc) which, like I said is a good amount by all means, but nothing special.
I'm guessing you was San Jose, seeing the only tripping call was by SJS.
4 calls for the CPU is a number I see most games on my BaGM and BGMC (excluding any fights and roughing calls).

Thank you EA - This game is officially better than sex

Just a quick question to the OP. Since EA has for years always made penalties directly proportional to period length....how long are your periods? I play Season Mode..AllStar..with 6 min periods and CPU penalties are nearly non-existant. Although I've seen a few since I unmaxed the penalty slider and put it back to default.

I'm just curious. How much penalties is considered enough?

I would be happy if there was 4 ppo per team per game. But also some difference from game to game. Sometimes more and sometimes less.

Re: Great Game! - Lots of Penalties!

Sorry, I didn't post my settings last night as promised! I was unable to sit down at the PS3 to copy them down, I should have time tonight though. Below is a general idea of what I did. This is in Be A GM mode.

I play on 10 min periods on Pro difficulty, pretty much all sliders are default except the main penalties slider and the fighting slider are maxed.

To make the goalies a little more of a challenge, I upped the goalie reaction slider a little bit. I am still fiddling with this one at the moment. I also put the shot accuracy for all types of shots down a bit to get more missed shots. I found this has cut down on the shot totals a bit.

For passing, I did knock the pass assist and accuracy a little bit to get more missed passes and this also leads to some more icing and offside opportunities.

One setting a definitely turned off is the Assistant Coach options. I like to tinker with my lines, and I hate the auto goalie rotation.

I agree with jonapaloma in that I don't want wall to wall penalties, but a nice smattering adds to the challenge.
