Ian actually was a big Fifa fan. And I've played him personally on both Fifa and Madden while he was at home. I'm really thinking that guys are really starting to come to grips with what this whole deal is. I fully understand what they are not willing to do. They aren't going to repeat the debacle of Madden 06. Where the game is on current gen will be where it is built from this gen, features and all. Problem is, a lot of us feel that is a severely cracked foundation.

I was at work watching the one preview thread implode, and had an epiphany. Both parties were right. This game won't change greatly. Not while it sells millions of copies. The suits won't let it change. Fifa was a big loser in the soccer gaming wars when the big investment was made in it. Madden isn't in a war. Especially now that it doesn't even have to compete with NCAA. It really doesn't matter if the developers like it or not. This game is about marketing and sales, plain and simple. It's more about advertizing the NFL in a high profile very "playable" fashion. As long as it fulfills that goal, it will not be allowed to change much. This isn't some game based on the creative mind of a developer like CliffyB. It has a purpose to make both parties a boatload of cash.

I started to really lose hope when they had the Q&A with the director of the NFLPA. He basically stated he doesn't care about the quality of the game, just that the players make as much money as possible. In hindsight, I think that guys like Ian did have big dreams for the game. But were severely handcuffed. The situation with AJ was a perfect example. He wanted so badly to build the perfect Franchise mode. Poured his heart into it. It didn't fit the online business model. Sad.

Funny thing is, for all of the handcuffing and battling for the vision of the series, nobody seems to winning. This game is stuck in neutral. Like others have said, it's on marketing to work with the developers to have a neat "wow" feature every year. I am personally amused/bemused by this. Bit by bit, every major franchise and every major management position is being filled by the one team and studio that had the guts and talent to reinvent themselves. Fifa team and EAC. NBA Live has even turned to the head gameplay producer from Fifa12 from to try and raise their Titanic. I think that sometime in the future Madden will get made into a Fifa level game. But not until the game gets considered a "Triple Play." Fifa was an arcady game. Triple Play, too. There is only so long you can have a poorly playing game. Both those games had pretty faces and authentic players, uniforms, etc. But they ended up getting viewed as fakes, as the sports gaming industry passed them by. Madden will face that crisis, too. And Fifa will be it's huckleberry.

I loved watching the podcast with Pasta, and all. The dude straight out said it. Madden was okay, but he couldn't wait to get home and play Fifa. It's a better built game. Vision and execution. Only thing that Madden has propping it up is the fact that most American sports fans are rabid football fans. Most hate soccer. But with NBC pushing it in such a public way, and the fact that Fifa is a whale of a sports videogame, Madden is going to get pressure from a totally unexpected direction. Then they will finally be forced to peel back all the years of crappy code and build something worthy of SGOTY, and the league it's supposed to represent. I'll be wating and playing Fifa and NBA2k while they sort it out......

Madden 17, the best game eva!
    Note to Tiburon Marketing:

A great product sells itself, no "back of the box" features required! (See Fifa...)

nice post, I pretty much agree. but I will say im pleased with the fact they are kicking off this gen with a more capable engine. dynamic interactions, interruptible animations, organic running, impressive animations game after game.

last gen while 2K was starting to bring us seemingly endless branching animations, multi player interactions, more complex player control systems. EA's engine struggled with advancing these areas giving us years of ping pong ball running in the trenches, exploding elbow tackles, repetitive canned animations, two player max animations. shotgun to the back tackles etc.

Next gen isn't starting in the same hole. the short comings now are Bugs, presentation, game stability, gameplay polish, and CFM sim/AI.(IMO). these items seem easier to be addressed as opposed to being stuck with outdated code for years while big wigs don't see the value in investing in changing it. at least it seems that way from the outside looking in

To be fair it's a bit more than that. It's almost like they are conceding that play calling in Madden is a different beast than real life play calling because they are going to use data from how actual humans call a game to stop the video game offenses. Only thing is it said nothing about integrating that knowledge back into the CPU play calling, which in my opinion is where the win is at with this feature. Humans already know how to call plays. Presenting this information to them is almost redundant. Now if they took that data and segmented it by team and rolled that back into the CPU game planning then we would be getting somewhere.

This is a great feature to have if the game plays well also. My biggest riff outside of gameplay has always been the commie plays ppl use online. The players who take advantage of the games non football IQ. I would hate to get ready for a match up, go through all of the time and adrenaline, thinking of my scheme to use against the certain team, then I'm playing against Mr. Cheese. Mr. Drop back 15 yards, and throw across his body to a wr. That magnetically is brought to the ball. That sucks. Or with the new madden, Mr Outs & hitch. Nah man. Make the "game or the D A. I. remember the last sequence of plays so my DB'S react faster to the route.

You don't always have time to audible coverages to compensate for Peyton mannings of the game world. So AI needs to reflect the blades of grass and dynamic lighting additions.

What that pic did show is K. Moreno (way to the left) wearing different color shoes than the rest of the players on the team. ---granted, while looking like a supped up Brandon Jacobs SMH---

EDIT: Another thing to notice (from the video MIA-NO) is that Dolphins away socks are fixed -no blue on the top, just aqua- this wasn't the case in the espn next-gen video.

I totally agree, also if NBA Live can deliver and revive even more pressure will be put on Madden to change direction. Looks like the only competition for Madden will come from under the same roof.

If I could give this post 1,000 "likes" I would.

I think this post speaks volumes to many of the veteran posters who have been here for years and watched as Madden began its regression in 06'. I also think it speaks to the many developers who have come and gone, (Ian and company), and the developers who still work on this game and probably read these boards without commenting.

It took me several years, but I have come to terms that Madden simply will not change, as long as there is no competition and the game still sells. Everyone that has played this series for years can tell this game is very stagnate and well below the quality of just about every other sports game on the market. I have been a fan of Madden since 92', and believe it or not, they were the innovators in the sports gaming industry for a majority of the time until 06'.

As Brian said, Madden has become much more of a marketing ploy, then a truly great game. EA realizes that people LOVE football, and they are the only game in town. They spend a ton of money with all these crazy advertising campaigns that play off of the fact the people love FOOTBALL itself.

It is a sad state we are currently in, but not one that looks to change anytime soon...

I feel like Madden will end up a lot better 2-3 years into this next gen of consoles. The headroom to improve is much greater and they should start to harness the computing and graphics horsepower easier this time since both consoles are very similar and based off of existing/well known PC hardware. Even though M25 is looking really Ho-Hum as of now for next gen I think we should probably be optimistic about what comes next.

You're pretty much spot on. I turned on 2k5 yesterday and after just 5 minutes, I turned it off. Why because I didn't want be any more frustrated than I already am. I don't care how the devs or Madden fanboys try to spin it. This is 2013! A game that old has aspects of gameplay still not seen in Madden. I'm watching and listening to these interviews and these guys on this Madden team don't get it. I've heard more emphasis about blades of grass than I've heard about gameplay. If that doesn't show you where their priorities does, I don't know what will.

Please dead that "next year" or "we hope the address x feature in the future" talk. I really do hope their sales plummet by drastic numbers and as result some other developer gets a shot at making an NFL game.

You vote with your dollars folks. Let them and the league know that a change has to come about. Sad part is, we live in a world where people are driven by how much money they can get. I'll tell this though, there's an end for everything. EDIT: Another thing to notice (from the video MIA-NO) is that Dolphins away socks are fixed -no blue on the top, just aqua- this wasn't the case in the espn next-gen video.
That is cool but doesn't make up for the sock glitch that makes 'low' socks non existent.

Madden player ratings need a TEAM.

Even though M25 is looking really Ho-Hum as of now for next gen I think we should probably be optimistic about what comes next.
The problem is, my friend, we thought the same thing with the current gen of madden. That hasn't turned out all too well.

They should've found a way to imbed that in the play calling screen. But I'm old. I'm sure there are folks willing to play with a 2nd screen sitting on their lap.
