Re: NBA 2K14 Real Voices Trailer
I really like this feature more than I was initially impressed, if that makes any sense.
The animations are a bit stiff and robotic-- I wish they'd spent a bit more time on the postures and making Doris Burke more lifelike. She should be moving the mic closer to her and the player's mouth, and should have different stances and animations based on player height. It wouldn't be too difficult to do-- and it's really weird her hands are holding the mic funny, and her offhand makes the weirdest gestures. I really wish they tried to capture the interaction of interviewer and player-- they're usually huddled much closer together, partly because of the height disparity, and because the mic needs to be close to pick up the audio.
I also think they could also have used better, less static camera angles. Rarely do you see a full body shot at length on TV. The close in shots look much more convincing, and I think they could have zoomed in a bit more to replicate a real broadcast. It'd also give them a chance to show off their head models even more. It's also really odd that they use such static angles for interviews while they use that dynamic up shot from below in all the trailers. Real interviews also use that shot (mostly because the cameraman is shorter), and it would be a perfect spot to work that in:
Check out all the camera movement and the switch to the up-shot at around :20.
However-- they really tried to capture some of the facial expressions and movements of players during their delivery. If you watch Garnett's actual interview, he bobs his head in the same way and in the same spots as he emphasizes certain words. The 2K animation is much more understated-- probably because it would contrast against the stiff posture of the players-- but it's there, and there's some life that creeps through despite the stiff body language. And dang, hearing familiar players and coaches. That's going to draw me in and resonate in occasionally surprising ways-- I'll probably be criticizing the animations in one game, and in the next feel-- damn, that really did look and sound like Iguodala. Iguodala is in my Xbox.
Also 2K needs to work on their hair technology. Apparently Dirk and Doris buy their wigs from the same place.
