Forza Motorsport 5 Review (XBox One)

With each new Microsoft console, a racing game is always there at launch. It was Project Gotham Racing by Bizarre Creations for the original Xbox and PGR 3 for the Xbox 360. This time, on the Xbox One, we have Forza Motorsport 5; the racing franchise from Turn 10 Studios. With new hardware comes new features like Drivatars and challenges.

Forza 5 keeps the same gameplay intact but some of the tracks and many vehicles featured in previous games are noticeably absent and the career mode doesn't really break any new ground.

" Drivatars are both good and bad, depending on who you end up racing against. There are times when you’ll have no trouble winning a race, and other times when it seems nearly impossible. "

In what possible way is that bad? That right there is as sim as it gets.

Nice write up and to each his own in regards to the Drivatars. I've actually played more of F5 then any other in the series and it's because of those said Drivatrs. Know those cars can screw up just like me and not racing on a line is a dream come true for me.

So far F5 is my favorite game on the X1.

Even though Forza 5 is more simulation than past games in the series, it still sometimes straddles the line between that and arcade. There are times when the simulation aspect of the Drivatars seems incredibly off. Like I mentioned in the review, that will vary from player to player.

Drivatar's are the difference maker for me on this game. I love them and I love the fact that you see the opponents you race make real mistakes.

Interesting points in the review. As a long term Forza player, I too was upset with the lack of cars and tracks. But realizing it takes time to build them and this is next gen, I'm able to look past this. Besides that, there's nothing but good times to be had playing Forza. Drivatars are dope!!

Negative critisism of Drivatars is crazy. If the game had been released with predictable AI it would of been slaughtered. Now it's not consistent enough?

I love the avatars and feel they make this the best playing Forza game yet.

Definitely need more tracks and cars, but that is understandable for a launch title.

For those that like the Drivatars, check the Forza friends list to add more names to your AI cars.

You are right. Having a group of people that you can communicate with makes it more fun. You also get to see how people's drivatars perform on different tracks.

I was only referring to the Drivatars and seeing the names above those cars. I don't really play online racing games.

"Horizon tried for a more silly, fun approach, while Forza 5 is trying to be serious. Whether someone wants a serious racing game is a matter of personal opinion, but that type of game just doesn’t seem to fit well."

First, let me apologize if I misunderstood your statement, but it seems that this review is predicated on a comparison to Horizon which would be erroneous. Forza never straddled the line between sim and arcade style, it has always been a sim (except for Horizon). I have purchased Forzas 1, 2, 4, & 5, and I can tell you that this is the best Forza gameplay-wise and visually. The addition of the Drivatar just puts the AI over the top (which means that criticizing Drivatar opponents for their errors is not a flaw in the programming, it is a matter of the real-world opponents on your friends list and elsewhere), and the damage modelling is incredible. The only drawback is the lack of tracks & cars (in comparison to its predecessors), and we all know that the tracks and the cars will be available for purchase (probably as soon as Christmas).

I know that this is a matter of opinion, but I am sure that this is the best sim-style racer on a console to date.
