Re: The Official 2013-14 Regular Season Talk Thread

Interesting concept on the NHL changing it's Draft Lottery system.
Apparently the NBA is seriously looking into this:

Say, have you heard of Connor McDavid? He’s THE NEXT ONE, after Sidney Crosby and Eric Lindros were THE NEXT ONEs before him. He’s the Canadian major junior ice hockey player with preposterous talent, vision, skills and potential. Put him … Continue reading → Say, have you heard of Connor McDavid? To paraphrase, no more lottery. Each team will be assigned a static draft position over the next 30 years.
So for example, the Wings will know that they have the 19th pick in 2017, 24th pick in 2018, 1st pick in 2019...etc.

It's an interesting idea, one I doubt the NHL goes for (but they do love to copy the NBA, so who knows).

I really don't think it's a fair system at the moment.
Who's to say a team wouldn't have had more, or less points if they were in a different division or conference? So why line them up according to points as if all 30 teams had equal travel and schedule?

That's why if there had to be a change, I'd prefer the draft resemble something similar to how the 2005 draft was done.
Give all 30 teams a chance at the #1.
Each team will have x-amount of balls in the box depending on how they finished, how many cups they've won, or how many #1 overalls they've already obtained in the past 3 or 4 seasons.
So teams like Edmonton, who've had multiple #1 picks over the past few seasons, would only get 1 ball, while other teams might get 3.
I think that's way more exciting and gives each fanbase a chance to get excited for that #1 overall pick.Comment

Totally onboard with this. Still burns me that the Canucks passed on Kopitar in '05.That's why if there had to be a change, I'd prefer the draft resemble something similar to how the 2005 draft was done.

Come on Dr. Jones. Kopitar? Kesler as your third line C is overboard. We all need some moderation in life.Comment

I'll never understood why the Devils are booted to a channel with camera quality from the 90's while the Islanders get great quality.

Bernier is truly one of the better goalies in the league. The Leafs, in the form they are right now, are probably the worst team in the east. I don't care about the Islanders massive losing streak. The Leafs suck hard, but Bernier is excellent.Comment

Shouldn't that not have counted because the puck disappeared from the ref's view? I dunno. Whatever it is, I'll take it.Comment

Re: The Official 2013-14 Regular Season Talk Thread

Firstly, I think that there are some teams that regret not taking Kopitar in 2005. Even though he isn't top5 C in league, he is still around top10 and he'd be first line C in most teams, because he is also great two-way forward - check his Corsi stats for last few seasons.

Secondly, Bernier and also Reimer are only reason why Leafs are still in playoff position and why we got points in last 3 games. But I really hope that Bozak returns quickly, that will be huge improvement for our team(and man, I really don't like Bozak, he is best case 2nd line C).

Thirdly, I'm actually happy that Mike Smith scored such goal, he was doing a lot of crazy stuff in last few games, always trying to manipulate refs..

And lastly, Rangers are having great D, but must change their scoring lines, cause they are lacking spark in attack.Comment

I'm sure teams regret not taking Zetterberg and Datsyuk and Miller too. But hey, you never know. The nice thing to remember is that specific player might not have had success on a different team.

Still grinds my gears that the Devils picked Jeff Frazee 34 picks before Quick got taken.Originally posted by XXstormmXXThe reason I always root for multiple teams is because if one team doesn't make the playoffs or gets eliminated, I loose interest in the sport until next season if my team gets eliminated early. Re: The Official 2013-14 Regular Season Talk Thread

The reason I brought up Kopitar is because it wasn't hindsight. I was screaming at Vancouver to pick Kopitar at the time. Kopi was the top-ranked European headed into the draft, and the Canucks had been notorious for terrible C and picking "projects". When it was the Canucks' chance to pick (10th), Kopitar was the highest-ranked player on the board, and they took Luc Bourdon (RIP). The Kings drafted 11th and took Kopitar.

I only blame teams for making picks that seemed dumb at the time, not after. The Canucks selected Petr Nedved 2nd overall in 1990 (three spots in front of Jagr), but it seemed a defensible pick at the time. Their second 1st round pick in 1990 (18th overall) was Shawn Antoski, who made me a bit antsy because he fit the profile of a lot of Canucks picks in the 80s (big guys who may or may not be able to actually play hockey), but hey, what did I know? NOTE: The next player chosen after Antoski? Keith Tkachuk. The next player after him? Martin Brodeur.Originally posted by Thrash13Dr. Jones was right in stating that.
