Is it possible for the glass to break in the NBA?

I remember back in the day, they used glass and it could break if someone threw it down hard enough.

Now they use a different material I guess. Is it possible to break the new material they use in the NBA today?

No, they invented the breakaway rim.

Breakaway rim doesn't completely fix it. I've saw backboards shatter with a breakaway rim, in person..

They tried it on sports science with Amare some time ago

I'm guessing a fail. He was explosive but doesn't have the power to break a new backboard..

I'm not sure it's not possible anymore, I doubt arenas keep backboards around long enough to find one with enough wear and tear on it to shatter..

It wasn't just him, they let him dunk and they tried it with an old wood grand piano as well and it wouldn't shatter. Its made to NOT shatter the glass now, just watch the video.

I don't think so. They seem to have made the rims especially sturdy.

It's plexiglass. Yes it can break, its just so strong that the entire hoop will break before it shatters (see shaq bringing down that hoop about 15 years ago). For reference, plexiglass is what is used for windows in fighter jets and race cars.

I blame Amare's terrible knees on Sports Science.

If it was possible Pau Gasol would break it every game with the way he goes hard at the rim.
