    A "Rugby-style" Offense???

Just had a great idea for a new dynasty!

So guys, I really like rugby. It's my sports fix when football season's over. I was thinking of creating a coach who was a former rugby player. After being inducted into the Rugby World Hall of Fame he wanted to take his career to the next level, by bringing the game of rugby to the United States. He starts his career as an OC, trying to prove that his "rugby offense" can work in American football, then becomes a HC and revolutionizes the sport of football itself.

Anyway, I wanna create a custom playbook that best resembles the game of rugby. Does anyone have ideas of what plays/formations would be good to build a "rugby offense?" I figured the Option would be the base, but I could use some help. If needed I can post some links of sample rugby highlights. It's a really cool sport.

From my limited knowledge of rugby:
kick a lot of field goals and punting after moving down the field in the flexbone.

I've been looking at some rugby highlights from this past year. The way these teams play, it compares to Flexbone all the way. Lots of toss plays, short dives and some sweeps.

But I wonder, if I can implement any shotgun into this...

Wanna see much of rugby in a nutshell? Check out the above links, as well as the links I'll provide below:

Anything involving England, Wales, South Africa, Australia, or New Zealand (my personal favorite) will give you real, hard-nosed rugby. Those teams are the Lakers, Yankees, NE Patriots of world rugby.

I don't know exactly how you would do that, I guess it would just be an option game. Flexbone/Pistol/Shotgun playbook maybe?

BTW how does anyone make it out of a European Rugby game alive? Geez.

Well from what I've seen, a lot of it is pitching the ball from "under center" (called a "ruck" in rugby). The 9-man receives the ball, then pitches it to the nearest player. This can also be done out of a "scrum", which is similar to a ruck, as well as a "snap" in American football.

So I think the HB Toss play has to be a staple. I also think Speed Option would have to be heavily incorporated as well. Maybe some Speed/Jet Sweeps to keep the defense honest & the flow of the game moving (since rugby moves like soccer). I'm also considering HB Screens as extended toss plays.

This is a pretty cool idea. I don't know squat about rugby. Would your playbook be run heavy or more of a balance between passes and runs? I'm assuming mainly running plays, but like I said, I don't know much at all about rugby.

I provided a few links to YouTube videos of rugby highlights in one of my earlier posts. Rather than watch a tutorial, I find it easier to just watch the game, as you can pick up on it pretty quickly. You can check them out if you like.

Well I'm more of a running, grind-it-out type of player. So I'll be biased towards the run. Plus, forward passing in rugby is illegal. But since this is football after all, most of my forward passing will be in the form of screen plays, Option passing plays and MAYBE some play action.

Right now I'm thinking toss plays, speed sweeps, speed & power options, screen plays, and the option passes mentioned earlier. Much of this can be done in the Flexbone, but I will incorporate other formations as well. Probably Shotgun, maybe Pistol, don't know about Wildcat just yet.

I also play a run heavy offense. I always played a Pro or Multiple style in the past, but this year I have been playing around with more options like the Spread, Pistol and even GT's playbook.
My only problem with a GT style option is that I have a problem where I will pitch to my HB at the last second which leads to a fumble. I have a ton of turn overs using that playbook so I scrapped it. I also don't like handing off out of the Shotgun, so the Pro fits me better. I just hate passing. I'm looking forward to see how this plays out. Let us know what your playbook is and keep me posted on your progress with this offense. What team would you start out with?

The thing that is impossible to replicate in the game is the use of various kick types in rugby to create scoring chances when open play is completely defended. It essentially translates to the ability to transition from a running play to a passing play at any point in the play.

Imagine if a safety is squared up for a tackle, you chip a little grubber along the ground, and the slot receiver supporting the play darts past for a scoop and score.

Additionally, I think to replicate rugby you'd have to run a no huddle since the pace of play is the cause of most defensive breakdowns in the union code. So maybe a flexbone no huddle, and a 46 defense.

                      Interesting experiment.

Now imagine you you could get your RB to do this when he's held up in the tackle! Sort of Greg Jones vs UNC-esque.

My solution to this problem is to utilize the option "passing" plays in the game. I'm talking about the option plays where the WR's actually run routes and the QB has the option of throwing the ball downfield if the run play isn't there. Sort of like "punting" the ball in rugby to gain an offensive advantage.

Yeah, I figured that. Since the pace of rugby is identical to that of soccer, a no-huddle is a must. This means my play selection for this book is going to be pivotal, so as to not disrupt the flow of the game.
