If I'm not mistaken, I think it matters on where and how much you play them? Because Green stars mean that player his highly likely to reach full potential and gold means average potential. So I guess it depends on the player and when you play them. From experience though it seems 4 green stars is a safe bet.

Both, as long as you are adhering to their squad "role" and position then they should develop fully. A Green star player would appear to have more chance of growing fully even if played slightly out of role or position. A Yellow or Red Star player needs more careful planning and much more adherence to their role and position.

Ok here is why I'm asking my question...

I'm looking to trade my 4 green star for the 4 1/2 star. Here are the prospects-

Ok, so picked up a 4 green star TWD defence prospect in a trade. His name is marko tuulola he is 58 overall. His is also 21 years old.

Philly drafted a 4 1/2 yellow star defenceman. His name is Derek Bartley DFD he is 76 overall and is 19 years old.

I don't know if this will help or not...

Edit: does trade value matter? If one is higher than the other will they get better?

To me, that 4.5 gold looks better. And like Mark said, he should progress well if you play him to his role/position. But yeah I would say the 4.5 gold looks better.

What I have generally seen is that a 4 green star player may progress somewhat slowly but is almost guaranteed to eventually end up with an overall rating of 84-87. However, if the player starts with a fairly low overall rating he might not be really ready for the NHL until age 23-25.

In general it seems like all 4.5 star prospects, regardless of color, tend to have an accelerated development curve. They will either develop very quickly and likely hit their maximum rating by age 21/22 or develop more slowly picking up 3 to 4 points on their overall until age 26/27.

All things being equal I would probably take the 4.5 prospect.
