Re: How's Your FIFA 14 Career Mode Going?

I'm 29 games into my second season with Villarreal. We're top of the league, seven points clear of Barcelona. With nine games to go, the only big fixtures left are away games to Barcelona, Malaga and Real Madrid. A total of 73 points is thanks to an incredible 23-4-2 record.

Remy is having a wonderful first season, having scored 15 and created 11 in the league. For someone with poor balance and strength in the mid-70s, he makes for quite a target man. It also helps that he can jump and head rather well. Not far behind in the star rankings is dos Santos, with 12 goals and nine assists. Together, they are the top two scorers for Villarreal and in La Liga overall.

After the close of the transfer window, I moved to a custom 4-3-2-1 setup. The two M/H centre backs are flanked by a H/M right back and H/H left back, and protected by a L/H defensive midfielder. Ahead of the CDM are two H/H central midfielders, who play behind a right (M/M) and left (H/L) forward. Up top is the striker, who has M/L work rates. This summer, I'll be either supplementing and strengthening for the 4-3-2-1 or rebuilding using the 4-1-3-2 that served me so well at Nottingham Forest.

Thanks, yeah I'm not sure how much the little form changes affect players day to day in career mode but pretty much everyone is trending upwards and playing extremely well.

Interesting set up, are you still able to get decent width? Or is it more of a set up for dominating the center of the pitch?

Hey pal, I wrote this 4-3-2-1 guide for a fan site after some tweaking. I think it should explain everything!

          *****

I happened to read an Ultimate Team guide on Zlatan Ibrahimovic, which stated that the 4-3-2-1 is the best way to get the most out of him. It got me thinking that the 4-3-2-1 is often overlooked because of its nature as a 'too-narrow' formation. But with a few minor tweaks, you can get plenty of width. The key is good players and good work rates; the latter, especially, is much easier to achieve in career mode than in FUT thanks to custom formations.

In reality, the best football teams always play with balance. For example, one will play slightly more infield than the other. A team with two attack-minded full backs will have them take turns bombing down the wing. When this balance is tipped, such as when Dani Alves and Jordi Alba simultaneously support the Barcelona attackers, it can leave other parts of the system (in this case, the central defence and midfield) open and prone to counter-attacks.

What I like about the 4-3-2-1 is that it offers the two things on which I base my play: four at the back and three in midfield. I also like having three attack-minded players up front, but I find the RW and LW in a 4-3-3 to be too wide to be of use in front of goal. Having two forwards playing off the striker instead gives me more options, and I can tweak their behaviour even further.

Let's have a look at the players, work rates and movement that makes my custom 4-3-2-1 tick.

          Positions

          GK:
It doesn't make much of a difference who your goalkeeper is as long as he's tall, and has good reflexes and diving. Of course, you should ultimately use whoever is best for you.

RB/LB: You need one to be cautious; look for good tackling and interceptions, as well as a bit of pace and decent crossing if you need to manually take him forward. The other should be far more adventurous, so he's got to have pace, tackling and crossing above all else.

CB: The right and left CB positions offer a lot of freedom in any formation. For this system, you're going to want to pair a ball winner with a ball player; the former can afford to be short on pace, while the latter absolutely needs to be a good passer of the ball.

CDM: First of all, you'll want to move the CM back to the base of the centre circle and covert him to CDM. You could play a destroyer with much better defensive attributes, or a well-rounded anchor who's more of a passer. Pace isn't vital for either, but because of the CDMโ€™s role, you'll need someone with a moderate amount of pace.

RCM/LCM: Midfield play in this system requires two central midfielders in top physical shape. One should have an attacking slant (and plenty of stamina), while the other should be slightly more defensive. Both should excel in passing and dribbling, be able to win headers in the middle of the park, and have good weak feet (4/5-star). I personally also like a right-left combination.

RF/LF: This is where we make this system go bonkers. One forward will be more of a goalscorer, while the other will drift out to offer width in the final third. I use a striker for the first role, and a winger/wide midfielder for the latter. Again, avoid fragile players without enough strength or balance. A strong weak foot is vital on both of these guys.

ST: This is your main guy. The formation is built around him. He's going to score (and possibly make) more goals than anyone else on the pitch. Because of the other players' work rates and movement, he's going to receive service from as many as eight different angles and positions (CB, RB, LB, CDM, RCM, LCM, RF, LF). Prioritise all physical traits, as well as dribbling, passing, finishing, long shots and heading. Spend the bulk of your transfer money here, on as good a complete striker as you can get.

          Work rates and movement

Because career mode allows you to modify work rates for a position, you have a lot more freedom to focus on player attributes and choose the right men for the job. In this 4-3-2-1, the work rates keep everyone linked together. The movement arrows, which dictate runs in attack and defence, ensure that everything flows as required and offers you a number of attacking options.

RB/LB: The defensive full back should have M/M, while the attacking side should be H/M (H/H if the player is blessed with 80 or more stamina). In addition, give this guy an attacking run pointing forward. Avoid two attacking full backs as it might leave you prone to counter-attacks.

CB: The centre back adjacent to your attacking full back should have a high defensive work rate, with his attacking work rate dictated by his pace (medium for 70+ sprint speed, otherwise low). The CB adjacent to the M/M full back can be anything except H/L or H/M.

CDM: If your CDM is going to be a destroyer, set this to L/H. If he'll be an anchor, go with M/H.

RCM/LCM: The attacking role gets H/H, while M/M is ideal for the defensive side. You can try M/M on both if you want to be cautious, but it would kill the dynamism that makes this system work so well. The key is to place the attack-oriented CM on the same side as the defensive full back, and give him a forward attacking run (it should point directly at the forward ahead of him). The other midfielder gets M/M work rates.

You can handle defensive runs here two ways. First, you can have your M/M midfielder move directly into the space vacated by your attacking full back. Alternately, you can have him move to base of midfield while the CDM moves to the full backโ€™s spot. M/M midfielders closer to the halfway line mean the first option is best. If you play your CM further up the pitch, or if you want to give him H/M or H/H work rates, go with the second option.

Either way, defensive transitions should resemble a 4-1-4-1 shape. And we all know how resilient that formation is while defending.

RF/LF: Your crossing forward goes on the same side as your defensive full back, ahead of your H/H midfielder. Give this position M/M work rates and an attacking run pointing towards the touch line closest to him, i.e. pointing left for LF and right for RF. This way, you create width as well as space for the H/H midfielder to occupy. The โ€˜second strikerโ€™ goes on the other side, with an attacking run towards the opposition goal. Give him H/M work rates so that he tracks back into his base position, giving you a true 4-1-4-1 shape in defence.

ST: The key here is M/L work rates, so that he can stay involved in the build-up play while still finding himself in space to shoot or pass. This guy is going to have a free role, so donโ€™t give him any movement customisation.

Remember, if you switch up the work rates, do so across the board.

Re: How's Your FIFA 14 Career Mode Going?

Interesting stuff, indiblue. FIFA gets a fair amount of schtick for not being "tactical" enough, but there is some depth (albeit rather clunky) for those who choose to explore it.

I'm struggling to find the right mix for my Genoa CM squad (latest update, no changes yet). I have three fairly well-rounded CMs (Kucka, Bertolacci, Cofie), but none are skilled enough to play as a true CAM. Fetfazidis has some good ball skills, but lacks the strength & vision to play in the hole. Gilardino can poach, but lacks pace/dribbling to play on the counter and isn't a great on the ball. I have Centurion, De Ceglie, and Vrsaljko who all have some pace, but don't have the ball skills to be effective without better players around them. Here's what I tried thus far:

            3-4-1-2
I like the idea of the formation and will likely build my squad around it. As of now, I need true CAM (I might make a run at Diamanti in January) and could use more of a dribbling striker (Ibarbo?) to pair with a poacher. Other than that, I can make it work, although more athletic CBs to play on outside would really help cover at the back since the outside mids are looking to get forward to supply the attacking trio with service.

            4-2-3-1
After some injuries and performance scared me off of three at the back for now, it's mostly been the two variations of this standard setup. Wide works well for holding leads, but doesn't offer much going forward with my CAM/ST options. The RAM/CAM/LAM version with aggressive pass risk and free form positioning makes for dynamic attacking movements, but I need at least two more skilled AMFs to use it consistently.

To top it off, several teams in Serie A play with three at the back, making three up top a tempting choice since it will pull the CBs apart. But I can't find the right combination of players/formation/tactics to make that work without being too vulnerable defensively.

Really great and in depth write-up, and with such a detailed talk about the tactics I'm definitely going to consider giving this a shot with my West Ham club because with a few of the purchases that I just made I think it will actually fit really well.

              The set up would be:
              GK - Adrian
LB - Razvan Rat/New Purchase (can stay more defensive)
              CB - Winston Reid
              CB - James Tomkins
RB - Kieren Trippier (great at going forward, good pace)
CDM - Mohamed Diame (solid rock defensively)
LCM - Ravel Morrison (more attacking minded)
RCM - Mark Noble (more rounded/defensive minded)
LF - Matt Jarvis (wide player)
RF - Alexandre Lacazette (attacker/second striker)
              ST - Andy Carroll

Hate the idea of it bumping Kevin Nolan out of the squad because he has played so well but I really want to get Lacazette into the squad and I think this will utilize all of our strengths well. We shall see how it would continue into season 2 with Clement Grenier (CAM) coming into the team on a pre-contract. Grenier doesn't have a ton of pace though but he has unbelievable technical stats on the ball, so he might even fit into the CM role in Noble's position to bump Noble back to the CDM role where I think he is best suited. So it definitely provides plenty of options at least in terms of tactical ideas from my normal 4-2-3-1.

Hey Qb, I think a 4-1-4-1 with H/M or H/L wide players might suit you. From what it seems, you might find your midfield plays better when you pack it. High work rates on the RM and LM will let you attack the space left by most Serie A teams playing 3ATB. I would recommend more cutting in and less crossing in that formation.

From my experience, Nolan is fantastic but not nearly as great in attack as Ravel or as good in possession as Grenier. I would use him as an impact sub or when you want an extra midfielder to support your attacks, i.e. big games or when chasing results.

Also, don't implement the 4-3-2-1 without the custom tactics below:

                  Build-up play:
                  Speed 50
                  Passing 45
Positioning: Free form (use Organised until you have a better LB than Rat)

                  Chance creation:
                  Passing 30
                  Crossing 50
                  Shooting 70
                  Positioning: Free form

                  Defence:
                  Pressure 50
                  Aggression 50
Team width 50-70 (try different values in this range and settle on what works for you)
Defensive line: Cover (I use Offside trap with two CBs with 75+ pace)

Re: How's Your FIFA 14 Career Mode Going?

I think FIFA when played on a good setting, can be rather tactical, if you choose to approach it that way, because like QB said, its for people who want to explore it....

Every game, i use my own custom tactics, always leaning more defensively from the start... Also if im playing a fast team, instead of matching speed, which can be hard to do, i counter with strong defensive backs.

Also, thats the beauty of actually playing the games vs simming them, if you play a certain style, as a manager you can see who fits and doesnt, so that in itself is tactical in who you choose as a starting 11 & your approach to the game..

                    Great in depth discussion

Agree with Ron in that playing games forces you to make tactical decisions as both player and manager, such as how to approach a big game that you must not lose.

FYI, I'm toying around with another 4-3-2-1 system. Two M/M centre backs, a pair of H/M full backs, a M/H CDM, H/M CMs and RF/LF, and a H/H striker. I should have the results up by this weekend.

Fair enough, I wholeheartedly agree. I just did a depth chart analysis of the team and I think if it actually works out that we are set up better to play the 4-3-2-1 as I want to get Lacazette and Carroll into the squad while still keeping some strength in midfield. Obviously with Grenier next year it may support the 4-2-3-1 with 3 AM's or the 4-3-2-1 but we can cross that bridge when we get there. Definitely need to address the LB position and potentially depth at both central midfield and on the wings as cover for Jarvis.

Michael Bradley is definitely someone I may look to convince to come over to the EPL with my remaining 3 million pounds or so to upgrade over Diame as the ball winner in CDM.

Started a new cm with Man United. Changed difficulty to world class (no sliders). Currently 8th in the league. 1st in champions league group stage. Still in capital one.
So far this season has been terrible. I've suffered many defeats and draws to little teams. Currently using 4-3-3 formation any tips on finishing well on world class. I usually have high ball possession stats, but terrible shot to goal ratios.

                          Current Squad.

Really getting my free kick accuracy going. Two games straight I've hit the post. Can't wait till I can knock these down consistently.

Great convos above also! For a while I felt like this thread was just updates with little to no interaction.

I haven't done much in terms of customizing my set as I get a bit over whelmed. But with scouting, and having built my team with players I wanted, after this next BPL game I'm going to start changing strats based on team and be more involved.

Well hell im nowhere near as knowledgeable and in depth as you guys are iin your careers. I just got a few players in Milan to play the way I want.

Im in my second season and after selling Kaka and Robinho along with a few other bench players I brought in Alexandre Song from Barcelona and Aubameyang from Dortmund for the wing.

So now I have El Sharaaway and Aubameyang on the wings with Honda in the middle and of course the monster Balotelli up front. I like to have blazing quick counterattacks and all four of those guys are pretty pacey. Song helps setting that up intercepting things in my end on defense. 4 - 2 so far on the season

Re: How's Your FIFA 14 Career Mode Going?

Currently in season 2 with America from the Mx League. July 28th to be exact. Last years goals were to win the both cups but I didn't win either. Trying my best to change that this year in fear of getting sacked.

So this transfer window brought in some major future contributors. Getting about 9M a year in transfer budget, I managed to bring in Max Meyer from Schalke for 9M +Medina.

With the left over wages, I converted that into enough transfer budget to sign Simone Scuffet for 1.4M

Looking forward to a great year. My attack should be able to take over this league, but depth is really going to kill me this year so I need to pray for minimal injuries.

                                Customized 4-3-3 Attack

                                GK- Simone Scuffet (69)
                                RB- Deandre Yedlin (69)
                                RCB- Eric Pimentel (70)
                                LCB- Aquivaldo Mosquera (70)
                                LB- Pablo Aguilar (73)
                                RM- Gael Bigirimana (67)
                                LM- Valentino Lazaro (66)
                                CAM- Maximilian Meyer (73)
                                RW- Victor Andrade (67)
                                ST- Raul Jimenez (77)
                                LW- Raheem Sterling (77)

P.s- I don't know what's going on. I recently made the switch from professional to World Class. On professional, I would win games like 3-2 or 2-0 and draws bunch of games. Now on World Class I'm winning games like 4-1,5-0. I think Fifa is trolling me.
