Press Row Podcast - PAX East 2014 Panel

In the 80th episode of the Press Row Podcast, we feature our Press Row Podcast PAX East 2014 panel in its entirety. Titled “The Crisis in Sports Games”, the group takes a look at the state of sports games from the Consumer, Developer, and Publisher standpoint. Do game purchasers have enough choices? Do they get enough value from their games? Where are the arcade titles? Is too much asked of developers in too short of a time frame? Can publishers make enough money with expensive license and development costs? These questions and many more are posed and debated in front of a live audience.

A special thanks to the great people at PAX East 2014 for accepting our panel! We had a great time and hope to be back next year for the third straight PAX!

    Very nice podcast guys.

Totally agree that a newer model is required. Gamers are tired of paying yearly for roster updates. Even if that is not the case (it's more than a roster update), it will nevertheless be perceived as such because they aren't allowing customization. With the explosion of indie scene and open platforms like PC gaming on the rise, the old model is not working. People want control and customization over their experience. It's a matter of perception.

Instead of expensive licensing, they need to follow the Golf Club's example. Focus on good gameplay and let the community take care of the rest (customization/mods). The line between developers and customers is blurring. Have to move with the times.

Straight truth told here. Many will act like this is an "excuses" panel, but its the truth and it can't keep being denied on a yearly basis.

"To be concrete about it, 10 times as much user content comes from the users as comes from us. So we think we are super productive and badass, but we cannot compete with our own customers as regards the production of content. The only company we ever met that kicked our *** is our customers. We would never try to compete with them." -Gabe Newell, Owner of Steam/Valve
