FC ST. PAULI 2-1 AL. PETROLERA

A good crowd was on hand to witness the first preseason action for St. Pauli, in the form of a friendly against Colombian side Alianza Petrolera.

The hosts took the lead on just 7 minutes after Thy's hard work earned him the chance to cross from the right byline, where it was met by target man John Verhoek who connected well, but his thundering header hit the top of the bar. Fortunately, the rebound looped up off the woodwork giving Verhoek a second chance which he didn't waste, thumping his header into an empty net to make it 1-0 to der Braun-Weiß.

The lead was doubled just before the halfway point, when a neat interchange between Rzatkowski and Kringe allowed a cross from which Bartels evaded everyone with his run from the far post to power a header past a helpless Petrolera keeper to give the home side a 2-0 cushion heading into the break.

However the visitors got back into the game on the hour mark when a shot from the edge of the box was parried by Himmleman and collected before being slotted across goal for Carrascal to bundle home, making the score 2-1.

The game then swung back in St. Pauli's favour, with an attacking last 20 minutes brought on by the introductions of Schindler on the right wing and Nöthe up front alongside Thy. What appeared to be a blatant penalty was waved away by the referee in the dying seconds, nevertheless a good performance to begin the preseason campaign.

    FC St. PAULI (4-4-2):

    Himmlemann

    Ziereis
    Thorandt
    Gonther
    Nehrig

    Rzatkowski (Schindler 65')
    Kringe
    Buchtmann (Boll 80')
    Bartels

    Verhoek (Nöthe 65')
    Thy

      FC ST. PAULI 1-0 GRÊMIO

FC St. Pauli went with a much changed starting lineup for their last preseason game at the Millerntor Stadion against Brazilian side Grêmio.

The game once again began very well for the hosts, as a flowing move in the 13th minute allowed Rzatkowski to cross into the box where Fin Bartels was on hand to notch a second headed goal of the preseason campaign.

The score remained 1-0 until the break, with a stale middle spell in which neither side could create a clear cut chance, the best effort being a header from young St. Pauli striker Gregoritsch which Grêmio 'keeper Marcelo Grohe was grateful to clutch.

In the second period chances were few and far between. St. Pauli had several opportunities to kill the game late, but notably Bartels' and Boll's shots were blocked from promising situations. Grêmio's best chance came in the 85' minute when, after a headed clearance from Halstenberg, Adrian dragged his volley marginally wide through a crowd of brown shirts.

The game finished 1-0, der Braun-Weiß recording a perfect preseason at home in which they beat 2 quality opponents from South America and gave all players a run out.

      FC St. PAULI (4-4-2):

      Himmlemann

      Schachten
      Mohr (C)
      Ziereis
      Halstenberg

      Schindler
      Trybull (Schindler 68')
      Boll
      Rzatkowski

      Gregoritsch (Verhoek 68')
      Bartels

DOUBLE INJURY BLOW FOR ST. PAULI

The Braun-Weiß today learnt of two training injuries that occurred following the final preseason game.

Firstly, Christopher Nöthe will be out for about a week for a bruised rib, but should be ready to play in the season opening game at home to FC Kaiserslautern if necessary.

Also, backup goalkeeper Philipp Heerwagen suffered a pulled hamstring which should see him out of action for a month, meaning Robin Himmelmann will be on the bench for the opening game.

FC ST. PAULI 2-2 FC KAISERSLAUTERN

The Braun-Weiß were left to rue their chances as they surrendered an early two goal lead courtesy of a John Verhoek brace to draw with FC Kaiserslautern to start the season.

          MATCH REPORT:

To continue a repeating pattern, the game started so brightly for the hosts when they took the lead in the 10th minute. A perfectly places arial through ball from Schindler set Verhoek away, and the big man's drive accross goal was deflected into his own goal by Kaiserslautern defender Dick. Verhoek was credited with the goal, 1-0 St. Pauli.

Lightning struck twice when in the 13th minute St. Pauli doubled their lead. A Rzatkowski cross from near the left corner flag after a lung busting burst down the flank was met athletically by Verhoek, who headed seamlessly into the top left corner to give the Buccaneers a commanding lead at 2-0.

Through what was a tame period following the goal, Thorandt had the best opportunity as his shot from the edge of the box whizzed past the near right post after the midfielder struck it venomously.

A lack of discipline may be to blame for the visitors reentering a game they had otherwise been absent from, when Alushi was brought down on the edge of the box. The tricky winger then stepped up and smashed the free kick into the bottom left corner of the net with a sweetly struck drive that dipped desparingly past Tschauner in the St. Pauli goal. 2-1 at half time.

After a scrappy beginning to the second half, the hosts suffered a scare on the hour mark when Tschauner rushed out of his net to claim a cross destined to meet the head of powerful striker Idrissou. He couldn't quite make it in time, but thankfully it was headed on to his fist and cleared from danger.

The inevitable sadly occured on 70 minutes when, after building pressure and intensity, FCK drew level through the dangerous Idrissou. An ambitious looking lobbed through ball was helped into the path of the target man by Thorandt, and he calmly knocked it past Tschauner for 2-2.

St. Pauli fans would be forgiven for thinking they had retaken the lead on 80 minutes when a corner was met by Gonther who thundered his header against the top of the near right post and the rebound was claimed by Kaiserslautern 'keeper Sippel.

          Full time: FCSP 2-2 FCK

          • Manager Vrabec's comments:

It is a very bittersweet game for us. On the one hand the first half performance is the best I have seen from my players and they worked tirelessly to get into a great position in the game. However, we couldn't hold on and there are issues I need to address. Nevertheless I see it as a point gained against a great side.

              MATCH REPORT:

The game almost continued the theme of a bright start for St. Pauli as on seven minutes a tackle from Kringe allowed Verhoek to pick up possession on the halfway line. The target man then swivveled and played a wonderful 30 yard pass to set Fin Bartels through on goal, but his effort was magnificently palmed away for a corner.

However the calm was to be short lived, as from the resulting corner Dusseldorf failed to clear their lines on many occasions and after a driving run from Buchtmann, the ball was scooped away and fell to Verheok, who guided his effort in off the far left post from near the penalty spot for his third goal of the season. 1-0 Sankt Pauli.

The action was far from dull from that point until the break. Der Braun-Weiß remained bright, constantly breaching the host's 18 yard box and thanks to some good defending and last ditch tackling the deficit only remained a goal. Fortuna enjoyed some pressure late in the first half, with several crosses and through balls that almost broke the St. Pauli line, however it was 1-0 to the visitors at the break.

Dusselfdorf were almost level in the 51st minute, when after some tentative defending allowed a cross which was headed out before being fed to Lambertz. His shot from the right edge of the box to the top right corner was spectacularly tipped for a corner by Tschauner, keeping it 0-1.

After a spell of absolute dominance from the home side, their best chance came in the 67th minute when Benschop receiver the ball on the wing and slung in an inswinging cross first time which was flicked first by Kenia towards the penalty spot, then by Bolly towards the bottom right corner from 10 yards out. Tschauner once again produced a remarkable save to parry it, before a welcome clearance to keep the St. Pauli lead intact.

Late on, a chance in the 90th minute was spurned by Bellinghausen as he volleyed wide from a driven cross by Bolly.

It was a perfect performance from my side. We were disciplined, maintained our focus, and ultimately deserved the victory in my opinion. Late heroics were enough to save St. Pauli from what could be considered a sloppy and wasteful performace in a thriller at the Millerntor-Stadion.

                  MATCH REPORT:

Ingolstadt started the game far better, missing a host of early chances including a corner in the 7th minute, whipped in by Caiuby and met by the head of Ingolstadt captain Gunesch and clasped gratefully by Tschauner.

The first half performance was relitavely non existant from der Braun-Weiß and the away side capitalised on this in the 43' minute when they took the lead. Hofmann's shot from the edge of the box hit the right post before rebounding for Buchner to tap in, making it 1-0 to the visitors.

The Buccaneers best chance of the first half fell to Fin Bartels who, on the stroke of hal time, spindled on the edge of the box and fired a shot across goal which Oczan saved well. 1-0 Ingolstadt at half time.

Vrabek's half time team talk must have worked, as St. Pauli quickly levelled in the 52nd minute through who else but John Verhoek. The tricky winger Rzatkowski burst past the Ingolstadt full-back and crossed for Verhoek to head in from the far post to the far left of the goal, making it 1-1 and giving 'Big John' his fourth of the season.

Der Braun-Weiß missed a host of chances to take the lead, the most notable of which was a Kringe shot from just outside the box which deflected in the air and hung up there, but Verheok was just behind it and the 'keeper rushed to collect.

St. Pauli did finally take the lead in the 76th minute to begin a dramatic finale. A stunning through ball from Rzatkowki allowed Bartels to run on and finish by poking past the onrushing Oczan from the penalty spot to give Sankt Pauli a 2-1 lead.

However home fans hearts were seemingly crushed when Ingolstadt levelled in the 87th minute, as Hartmann's ball across the box was bundled in to the far left corner by Buchner to make the score 2-2 and give him his second of the game.

Despair turned to rejoicing for the home faithful in the dying seconds, as an ambitious looking through pass from Kringe turned out to be great vision and Maier latched on before dribbling in from the left side 1 on 1 and slotting past the 'keeper, sparking amazing scenes and giving St. Pauli the 3-2 victory.

I will focus on the main positive of the game in the fact we won, but in reality we didn't deserve to. We were quite wasteful and sloppy particularly in the first half, but we won the game so I must commend my team for their fight, determination and giving it their all.

                      MATCH REPORT:

In a first half dominated by the home team in terms of possession, they couldn't force many clear cut chances in the game. Notably, a shot from the left edge courtesy of Djurdjic was a couple of yards wide, and a good clearance from Nehrig stopped a clear chance in the 10th minute.

It was the visitors who opened the scoring just seconds before the half time whistle when the influential Buchtmann charged down the Greuther right back and blocked the clearance. He charged on and used quick feet to roll the ball across the edge of the 18 yards box to the in-form John Verhoek, who steadied himself before burying the ball in the bottom right corner for his 5th of the year to make it 1-0 St. Pauli, which it stayed until the break.

The home side proceeded to dominate the opening stages of the second half, and the controversial point of the match came in the 60th minute when they were awarded a penalty. The ball was delivered low and flat from the left flank where it struck what the referee adjudged to be an outstretched arm from Kringe. Djurdjic stepped up to take the spot kick, and despite guessing correctly, Tschauner was unable to prevent a goal as the ball hit the left post and went in to make it 1-1.

However the parity was to be short lived, as in the 65th minute a blocked cross from right back Ziereis went out for a corner which was whipped in by Rzatkowski. In an empty space around the far post, Thorandt appeared and powered a header into the near left corner to re-establish the lead for der Braun-Weiß at 2-1.

The drama began to unfold in the 89th minute, when Greuther finally broke down the resilient Sankt Pauli defense. Steiber's pass found Djurdjic on the edge of the box, who hit it first time across his body from the left side and the ball trickled past Tschauner into the right hand corner to spark scenes of jubilation amongst the home supporters, score tied at 2-2.

If there’s one thing we have learnt this season its that the Buccaneers don't give up easily, and sure enough this game was to be no exception. After three failed crosses, Nehrig collected the ball on the left side and slung it in to Nothe who found himself unmarked at the far right post. He chested the ball down and volleyed against a desperate diving Mavrag, but the ball fell to him again and his quick feet slid the ball past Baba and he slotted it past the 'keeper, much to the delight of a raucous away support. The game was then stopped for 8 minutes as flares and other objects were thrown on the pitch, but the visitors held on to make it three wins from three and continue their impressive start to the campaign.

                      Final score: GRF 2-3 FCSP

                      • Manager Vrabec's comments:

I thought in the first half we showed them too much respect, but we got into the game and probably deserved the lead. We weren't great defensively, but its something we can work on and I'm sure we will get better. Attacking wise we were very clinical again and its a part of our play that pleases me, but the most important thing is the win and I am very happy with the start we have made to the season.

                          MATCH REPORT:

Dresden adapted to windy and rainy conditions best, and were denied from being through twice in the first five minutes thanks to the linesman's offside flag.

However, the hosts had the first real chance after Rzatkowski picked up the ball on the left flank, darted inside before rolling to Bartels who passed to Verhoek. On the edge of the area, 'Big John' launched a shot with pace that was well saved by the Dynamo 'keeper Scholz.

The next chance came just two minutes later when Schindler played a lovely through ball which Verhoek picked up on the right edge of the 18 yard box. He crossed low and flat, and despite hesitancy, Scholz was able to stop Bartels stab at goal to keep it 0-0.

Again the home side came close on 40 minutes with a Bartels header from a Schindler cross, after the winger had found himself in acres of space on the left side. The forwards header made decent connection but hit a Dresden defender and, rather than wrong footing Scholz, it slowed it down enough for him to catch. Following a Kringe longshot that was easily held, it was 0-0 at the break.

A big chance came early in the second half after good pressing from the home side allowed Buchtmann to pick up the ball and roll it to Bartels about 25 yards out. He waited, before slotting the ball with precision through to Schindler making a cutting run from the right. As the 'keeper charged out he could only drive the ball wide of the left post with his left foot.

Another huge chance was spurned minutes later, when a quickly taken free kick from Dresden was pressed by Ziereis and he quickly found Bartels up field on a breakaway who, after winning possession, ran 50 yards on his own only to see his effort magnificently tipped for a corner.

Sickeningly for St. Pauli, who had dominated the game, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 79th minute. Hesitant defending of an over-the-top through ball allowed Pote to collect and slot underneath Tschauner from the left edge of the box to give Dresden a 1-0 lead.

It was another show of late heroics for the Buccaneers as they levelled the game in the 85th minute. Throwing nearly all bodies forward, Nehrig found space to cross on the left byline where he picked out newly substituted Nothe. His header nestled in the top right corner from just in front of the penalty spot to tie the game at 1-1 with just minutes to play. Despite a threatening late free kick for Sankt Pauli, the scoreline remained until the final whistle.

The conditions were very difficult and we started slowly. The tactics didn't go to plan because of this, and I thought a point was probably a fair result. We had a lot of shots, but didn't threaten regularly enough. If you can't win, its important that you don't lose and we made sure of that today with our spirit and determination.

VRABEC RUMOURED TO BE TRACKING SEVERAL TARGETS

                              4/10/2013: -- St Pauli, Hamburg

Roland Vrabec is supposedly lining up several possible incomings for the January window despite having limited funds, estimated at just over £1,000,000 to work with.

The first, and most serious target, is Alexander Bittroff from Energie Cottbus. Bittroff is a 25-year-old lef back, whose main characterstic is his pace, as well as his eye for a pass and thunderous strike, adding to his impressive goalscoring record. The youngster is apparently unhappy with the current regime, and the Cottbus manager has lamented his attitude and lack of effort, causing him to want away. His current value is around £800,000.

Next on the target list is Tobias Muller from Dynamo Dresden. Another youngster, Muller is a very versatile player who can play in many positions, but by trade is a CF, and is rated very highly among the Dynamo management team. His current value is around £525,000 but St. Pauli may have to overpay to get him.

Also scouted are VfR Aalen duo Fabio Kaufmann and Enrico Valentini. Playing right midfield and left midfield respectively, both are capable of fantastic deliveries and would likely be signings to add strength and depth to the line-up. Kaufmann is valued at just £100,000 and his accomplice is valued at £375,000.

In addition to permanent deals, Vrabek could be lining up two loan signings from cross-city rivals Hamburger SV. First of the two is 17-year-old highly rated CB Jonathan Tah who is sure to develop into a strong player if given the right game time. Also on the radar is 18-year-old CM Matti Steinmann, but it is unclear as to whether Vrabek will opt to attempt a pre-contract deal to tempt his into permanently signing for the club, rather than a loan.
