Um....Manager Advice - Possible HUGE MOVE

Ok, I have been at IFK Goteborg (Allsvenskan) for, well this is my 4th year. I have built a 4 star team, I won the Allsvenskan last season and this year I've already qualified for the Champions League knockout stage. Before that I spent 2 years in MLS at Sporting KC. Every now and then I job to the Jobs screen, just to see what's out there. I've been turned down for every job I applied for, most times I did it for giggles and was ok when I get turned down. That's all changed.

SL Benfica has offered me the job. They sit in 6th in Liga Portuguesa, they have a $22mm transfer budget and 6 players 80+ overall. WHAT DO I DO?

Should I finish out the season at IFK? Or jump ship and start to build SL Benifca into a powehouse (I'm the coach of the national team for N. Ireland), but my ultimate goal is to coach in the Premier League. I think coaching in Portugal would cross off moves to Bundesliga and/or La Liga, leaving really only the Premier League as the next step, of course I could still be in shock.

I hit STALL and saved and will go back to it tomorrow because right now I don't know what to do!

    HELP!!

Tough choice... on one hand, I'm sure you're invested in and attached to IFK. Plus, you have a chance to win titles and play in Europe. As a strong team in a weak league, Benfica offers you the same, but possibly with the chance to do more damage in Europe. However, perhaps the Benfica offer is a sign of things to come after your recent success; maybe an EPL job isn't far off. I think I'd finish this year, hopefully win another title & round or two in UCL, and see what's out there.

If you feel the need for change and some more competitive teams to play against definitely take the Benfica job. On an important note if you want to be accepted at clubs when applying you have to fulfil the boards expectations to get noticed. Otherwise you will be mostly rejected

Going to Benfica might open up new opportunities for you and a bigger budget to work with

Personally I would take it but if you feel at home with your team then it's up to you

Normally I wouldn't think about switching mid-season, but this is a HUGE step up in terms of league/team prestige. I do have a lot invested in my team at IFK. I signed a 16yo keeper who at the time was a 67 and he's now a 72 with 81 GK ability (he's my keeper in waiting) and I also have 2 awesome strikers that I got via transfer, my defense is all under 25 and over 75 rating. The catch is that my budget is limited and will continue to be so and a lot of the guys are wanting to discuss salary and probably (and deservedly so) ask for a raise, all of which I will not be able to satisfy. My gut/heart is telling me to stay at IFK through the year and hope that I can get an offer over the summer to move to a different league, otherwise I'm going to have to do some fancy negotiating to keep the core of this team intact.

Now that I've thought it over, I will turn down the offer to manage SL Benfica. I will do two things:
1 - continue to check 'My Jobs' to see any possible openings in EPL, Serie A, or La Liga - I consider those to be the elite leagues and I will leave for a job whether it's mid-season or not

2 - I am 5 points clear of 2nd place in my league (and that includes a loss to that team) so I am in a good spot to win back-to-back league titles, that coupled with my success in the Champions League so far should make me an attractive option to other teams.

There might be some satisfaction of taking a mid table side from Spain or England to Europe vs going to Portugal which is a 2 or 3 team league at best

              A funny thing happened....

so I turned down the SL Benfica job. I then manage to win at Spurs in the final game of my Champions League (Cup) Group Stage match which won me the group, so I'm facing LOSC instead of Bayern as is Valencia (#2), then all of a sudden my team goes to crap. I draw with a very poor Djurgardens and my #1 striker gets a sprained ankle (-6 weeks?!?) Luckily Malmo lost and has fallen further back as our second matchup of the season is my next game and by winning that I will go up +9 on them and +13 on the #3 team. I'm in the midst of the winter transfer window and sold off an aging RB and replaced him with someone 6 yrs younger and only 2 overall points less which I think evens out, he's also 6 inches taller. My main problem now is that I have a HUGE reserve roster and no takers for my players listed For Loan?

FYI - the only jobs posted as possible openings since my reject of Benfica have been Korean League and Brazilian League squads.

Re: Um....Manager Advice - Possible HUGE MOVE

I understand that you feel that you invested a lot and I am gonna state my opinion now an you might not like it:

You made a mistake not taking the Benfica job. To be an attractive option u needed to have fulfilled EVERY SINGLE objective that the club has set you since joining. If your ambition is to go to the premier league or other top league for instance starting at Benfica would've given you a clean slate and fulfilling objectives for two seasons straight would've given you that opportunity to move to a big league
Now I think you won't be able to find another opportunity like this unless a club offers you a job like Benfica did which doesn't happen much
If you are only seeing Brazilian/Korean teams in your Find a Job section then it will most likely stay that way for as long as you are in that particular league. Job openings of similar league standards only appear usually

Re: Um....Manager Advice - Possible HUGE MOVE

I wasn't offered this job, I applied for it and was then offered. I've done that countless times (with nothing but rejection) for teams from England, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Denmark. This was the first time I'd gotten an offer. The job for IFK Goteborg was offered to me after I won the MLS Cup, I did nothing to pursue it. My main reason for not wanting to switch is leaving a team mid-season, but my exit may not be as guaranteed as I may like it because I've been getting emails from players this past 2 days asking for more money and my budget may not allow me to pay them what they want. In that case I would need to sell them and then I could try to recoup replacement players (younger/similar OVR), but if I do that with this team, then why not leave for SL Benfica when I had the chance. Lord help me.

I just wish I had a clearer understanding of how the European Leagues are ranked, I would guess that Allsvenskan (no offense) is at the bottom along with who? Switzerland? Then up to Portugal/Austria, then up to Russia/Denmark, then France, then Germany, then Italy/Spain, then England?

Re: Um....Manager Advice - Possible HUGE MOVE

                    In my opinion:

                    1. England (Premier League)
                    2. Spain (Liga BBVA), Italy (Serie A), Germany (Bundesliga)
                    3. France (Ligue 1)
                    4. Russia (Russian Football Championship), Turkey (Super lig), Portugal (Liga Zon Zagres), Brazil (Liga Do Brasil)
                    5. Netherlands (Eredivisie), Belgium (Jupiler Pro League), Argentina (Primera Division), Mexico (Liga MX)
                    6. Sweden, Scotland, Denmark, etc.

This is not 100% right though, it's simply a matter of opinion. Take a look at this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UEFA_co...urrent_ranking
                    This shows you league prestige.

                      Uh...oh....

Won my league, won the league cup, and made a surprising/awesome run to the semi-finals of the Champions League (lost to ManU after dispatching a injury riddle ManCity in the Quarters). No job offers. I applied to an opening at Wolverhampton and got rejected. Turning down Benfica now seems like a bad move. Is it possible I will get an offer over the summer?

                      Yikes!

I suppose it's possible. Id say the next reasonable offer you get. You take it.

Not half as much as I have.

My problem now is that I'm flush with $30mm in transfer budget, the bulk of my roster is 77+ overall, and I only lost once last season in League play. I'm afraid if I stay another year it's going to become very boring to say the least. I'm hoping something happens soon.

Being rejected by Wolverhampton scares me - I may have to settle for Ligue 1 or Bundesliga (ha I say settle for...those are elite leagues, much more prestigious than Allsvenskan!)
