GM Mode: I got DiPietro'd. Anyone else see this?

Playing an NHL 14 GM Mode and I'm in year 10 (2024) of the campaign. I drafted a 4 star goalie a couple of years in. He had progressed to a 79 OVR in the minors and at age 23 was my minor league starter. Last year, his contract is up, AND he suddenly shoots to an 89 OVR. Lousy timing contract-wise, but I feel like I have my elite goalie of the future. He wants 7 years at 8 million, I manage to get him for 8 years at 7.2 million. (He's still only 32 in 8 years, young for a goalie) I trade my 85 OVR previous starting goalie, for a two-way center which fills a huge hole in my team, and then I proceed to make it to the Stanley Cup final, led by my star goalie, losing to the Winnipeg Jets in 7 games.

So I go through the draft, the off-season, and I'm ready to again be a contender when... I see my now 25 year old, 4 star (gold) goaltender is back down to an 80! Stats like his Poise have dropped to 65! The game doesn't even classify him as an NHL backup! (He's set at minor league starter)

I have been playing NHL 14 GM mode a lot, and I've never seen anything like this. To go up 10 points OVR in one year, and down 9 OVR the following year? Is this some kind of glitch or has this happened to anyone else? And any tips on how to survive with 7 million of your cap going to a minor league starter?

I had that happen to a RW. He was a natural center that I drafted, 82 overall I think, was a sniper so I put him with 97 overall Connor McDavid. After scoring over 100 points he shot up to around a 90, but then dove back down to an 84 the next year. Thankfully I didnt get screwed with the contract year.

This is off topic, but... an 80 overall player being a minor leaguer?! This is why we made the Revamped rosters.

Yeah, this happened to me for the first time also. Got fired after 3 years by the Canucks, decided to take over the Islanders. Calvin De Haan needed to be resigned and he was 89 overall at like 26 years old I think. Wanted 7 mil for at least 6 years. Decided to give it to him, but come the beginning of the new season I realize he's dropped back down to an 84. About to cap off as a top 4 dman at 7 million dollars for the next six years.

Interesting idea, but looking at his stats from the previous year I'm not exactly sure why he jumped up to an 89. Didn't exceed 30 points, was a -10. I'd be fine as long as he was coming off an incredible season and then just slipped back down after his new big contract, but the game basically tricked me.

in a gm mode i did with the sabres i had a goalie i drafted (i believe 2016) by 2020 he was in the NHL for his rookie year, in 2023 he had a monster year shot up to overal 88, it was time for his next contract so i decided to lock him up so gave him a 8 year contract, 9 mil a year... the first year under his new contract he got hurt in january out for the year... we missed the playoffs obviously... the next season started his overall was down to 82 and he never progressed more

I had the same thing happen to me. i was in my 16th season with Chicago i drafter a goalie year 13 he was a 2nd round pick and his potential was 1 red star he was the last goalie till the 5th round (weak goalie draft) he was an 82 goalie out of the draft but i had a starter already 84 ovr so i sent him to the juniors to get even better he did he was 86 the next season So he was my starter he got hurt after 3 games he was 3-0 with 1 shutout and a GAA of 1.50 and then he was an 85 the next year i but he was coming of injury so it didn't look problematic. and my old starter still 84 contract expired and he wanted 5 million and 2 years but i needed cap room so i didn't resign him. the goalie went and got hurt after 20 games 17-2-1 3 shutouts and a GAA of 1.64 so i had a 75 ovr goalie play that season and then my goalie dropped to 78 the next year. And there is never any good goalies in free agency so im so screwed.

in my current gm mode i got fired from florida after a 2nd round exit in the playoffs in yr 3 and then i decide to take over my hometown minnesota wild who had 3 mediocre seasons in a row all three years getting a top 3 pick. Draft time rolls around and i see a scouted 5 star goalie that caught my eye

I draft the kid and low and behold he started off at an 81 OVR the kid has a monster season and shoots up to a 92 OVR, we end up getting to the stanley cup finals and lose to my former team florida in 7 games, then the next year the kid gets injured right before the trade deadline,luckily i kept my old goalie in case of a situation of this matter and we win the presidents trophy. Playoff time rolls around and low and behold my 5 star goalie dropped to an 83 WTF EA
