    Stage 3: Continued

After finishing the 2013 season with a 4-12 record the New York Jets fired Rex Ryan. Left to pick up the pieces of a team almost in ruins is newly hired head coach Russell Malony. Malony is already having an impact on the team as the defense will be change from a 3-4 to a 4-3. The switch to a 4-3 defense has already prompted the Jets to move Quinton Coples to left end.

    Media Reaction
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: Can't say how important it is to have a coach who can put together a strong game plan. #Jets
Trey Wingo @WingozEA: Can't figure out the direction in New York. Need some stability, but they're rolling the dice. #Strange
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: Have to be a great athlete to be in NFL, so Q. Coples can make the transition to left end.

      Stage 4

After the hectic pace that free agency started with, this week had a lot less news than anticipated. Even though there isn't any action to report, there is some wheeling and dealing going on behind the scenes. Teams still have holes to fill outside of the draft, and now is a perfect time to do it. Now that most of the big names are off the board teams have a clearer picture of what they need to go after and what they'll be allowed to spend.

New England Patriots Free Agency News

The New England Patriots continue to restock at positions of need during the free agency period by offering tight end Michael Hoomanawanui and Sealver Siliga contracts. There hasn't been too much unfamiliarity with the free agents New England has offered contracts to so far as Hoomanawanui and Braxton Cave have played for the Patriots recently.

The retirements keep on rolling in as quarterback Carson Palmer and defensive lineman Justin Bannan join the list. Palmer's decision to retire will have a big impact on the Arizona Cardinals going forward.

          Other Free Agent Signings

After a brief slow down in the free agency scramble, things have turned frantic again. There were dozens of free agent signings over the past week which means there are a lot of new faces in new places. Some of the notable signings this week are of tight ends Ed Dickson and Dennis Pitta. Both were drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the 2010 draft, Dickson in the third round and Pitta in the fourth round. While both players are headed to New York, Dickson is headed to the Buffalo Bills while Pitta was signed by the New York Giants.

Something that hasn't occurred too often during this free agency period is a team re-signing a player from their 2013 squad. The Miami Dolphins re-signed safety Chris Clemons and defensive tackle Randy Starks. The Minnesota Vikings did the same when they re-signed linebacker Desmond Bishop.

The biggest free agent pickup, in terms of contract, is from the Washington Redskins. Linebacker Brandon Spikes signed a $63 million contract with $18 million of it guaranteed.

New England Patriots Free Agency News

While the New England Patriots haven't made any splashy free agent signings, they have been looking at players to fill depth positions on the team. Signing players like Braxton Cave and Chris Jones shows that the team is willing to develop their own players. At some point, New England will have to sign or draft a player that has the potential to start and make an impact, especially at positions of need.

          Media Reaction
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: Price is right for B. Spikes. He just signed with Washington. Redskins fans should be excited.
Mike Hill @MikeHillEA: E. Decker wanted a big challenge, and he'll have it in San Francisco. Super Bowl expectations now?
Chris Mortensen @mortreportEA: Reason to celebrate in #Denver. Per sources, V. Davis signs with #Broncos.

            Stage 6
Another quiet week in the free agency period has arrived. There are still a few big names left in the free agent market that teams would like grab. Big names like Golden Tate from the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks are still free agents. Other notable free agents include Anthony Spencer, Lamarr Houston, Jared Allen, Branden Albert, Michael Johnson, Jay Cutler, Jon Asamoah, Linval Joseph and Jacoby Jones. Something worth noting is that many of these free agents are on the defensive side of the ball. Whichever team is able to land these free agents will get an immediate boost. Also, depending on how the rest of free agency turns out, teams will be able to finalize their draft boards. Before looking that far ahead, lets turn to the last week of free agency to see how the remaining dominoes will fall.

The biggest news of free agency has to be the Cincinnati Bengals signing linebacker Ray Lewis to their team. Lewis played for the Baltimore Ravens from 1996-2012. During his time with the Ravens, Lewis was elected to 13 Pro Bowls and won two Super Bowl trophies.

Th last of the major free agents have been signed, and one player received a huge contract. One of the league's top pass rushers, Michael Johnson, receiver $94.5 million contract from the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins now have a defensive line with Johnson and Cameron Wake that can prove to be very troublesome for the quarterbacks in the AFC East. Staying in the AFC, the Jacksonville Jaguars bolstered their defense by signing cornerbacks DeAngelo Hall and Brent Grimes. The Jaguars didn't stop there, as they also signed defensive end Jared Allen to their squad.

New England Patriots Free Agency News

The New England Patriots have completed the free agency period by bringing a few players that could hopefully fill the void of players they let go. An area that New England went after aggressively is special teams. With Dane Fletcher in Seattle and Julian Edelman in Carolina, New England's special teams unit needed reinforcements. Other area of concern are at inside linebacker and defensive tackle. Both Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly are in the last years of their deals and aren't getting any younger. As for the inside linebacker spot, the development of Jamie Collins will bear monitoring and may impact how the team attacks the position.

              Media Reaction
Matt Miller @Matt MillerEA: Tarell Brown just signed with the Raiders. Great signing.
Darren Rovell @DRovellEA: The Jaguars just signed B. Grimes. Do their jersey sales increase right away?
Chris Mortensen @mortreportEA: Coup for Cincinnati as they sign H. Nicks, per sources. #Bengals fans will be ecstatic.
Trey Wingo @WingozEA: Devin Hester to the Eagles. #goodsigning
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: Price is right for J. Jones. He just signed with Jacksonville. Jaguars fans should be excited.
Skip Bayless @SkipBaylessEA: Not enough people wanted A. Boldin and I don't get it. He's going to make EVERYONE regret passing on him.
Mark Schlereth @MarkSchlerethEA: Solid signing by Indianapolis to get N. Asomugha under contract. Didn't pay too much for a high upside player.
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefterEA: Raiders reel in FA QB Josh Freeman, and sources tell me they're still hunting.
Mike Hill @MikeHillEA: M. Johnson wanted a big challenge, and he'll get have it in Miami. Super Bowl expectations?

                Other Free Agent Signings

With the 2014 NFL draft just around the corner, teams have finished signing free agents. The remaining big free agents have been signed and there are quite a few surprises. Some of the notable free agent signings to happen at this point are Jon Asamoah signing with the Arizona Cardinals, D.J Williams going back to the Denver Broncos, Josh Freeman to the Oakland Raiders.

After playing with the San Diego Chargers for the first four years of his career, linebacker Donald Butler will join Brandon Spikes as part of the Washington Redskins revamped linebacker core. Part of the reason Washington has signed both linebackers is because London Fletcher, along with Perry Riley have signed with new teams. Fletcher is now a Green Bay Packer and Riley is an Indianapolis Colt. Meanwhile, the Colts' division rival, the Jacksonville Jaguars, were very busy during free agency. Jacksonville signed wide receiver and return specialist Jacoby Jones, along with some other high-profile names.

                  Other Free Agent Signings

Just like the draft, the free agency period is graded on what players are signed and how those players fit into the teams scheme. While some teams signed players that can have an immediate impact, other signings were more questionable than others. The most shocking transaction of the free agent period (not for a good reason) is Jay Cutler signing with the Dallas Cowboys. The signing is questionable in two regards. One, the Chicago Bears failed to hold onto a franchise player, despite Cutler's shortcomings in the playoffs. Two, the Cowboys have committed a lot of money to the quarterback position and only one of them can play. The New York Giants find themselves in a similar position after signing tackle Branden Albert to a $38.4 million deal. Not too long ago, the Giants signed Beatty to a $35 million contract. It will be interesting to see how both situations unfold.

                    2014 NFL Draft Preview
The NFL Draft is an opportunity for teams around the league to think about both the present and the future at the same time. While teams like to see which players coming out of college will have a great impact on the future of their franchise, they also want a player that can contribute right away. This is only one aspect of the draft. Many gears go in motion when the team building comes into play. Teams also consider depth, how a player fits into the team's scheme, and how long a player may need to develop, among a host of other things. That's the exciting part of the draft. Despite all the research that teams do, there is always an unknown factor that plays into how a draft pick will impact a team.

Lavar Arrington @LArringtonEA: How can you not be excited for the NFL Draft? /get to see the stars of the future on their opening night.
Todd McSahy @ToddMcShayEA: Lots of options for Eagles in this draft. If they get one or two of the right guys, they'll be playoff bound.
Matt Miller @MattMillerEA: So many spots the Falcons need to improve, bu they can't go anywhere but LT for their first pick.
Skip Bayless @SkipBaylessEA: The 49ers HUMILIATED themselves last season. They need a FEARLESS C to get on track.
Mike Hill @MikeHillEA: Playoffs are a longshot for the Ravensbut a solid left guardgives them a punchers chance.
Susannah Collins @SCollinsEA: If the Titans can score a solid left tackle they might get the boost they need to sneak into the playoffs.
Trey Wingo @WingozEA: The Texans have issues, but a solid outside linebacker would put them in the playoff hunt.
Mark Schlereth @MarkSchlerethEA: Loved seeing the Saints win their way to the playoffs last year. This draft they better snag the top ROLB.
Trey Wingo @WingozEA: Tough to call out a team that made the postseason but the Patriots are undermanned. Need a C.
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: Steelers were a great story last season. With a tougher schedule, they need a LT to compensate.

Chris Mortensen @mortreportEA: I bet some phones are ringing for Brandon Weeden right now.
Aaron Schatz @ASchatzEA: Taking everything into account, I give C. Waissome the inside track at QB with the Browns.
Matt Miller @MattMillerEA: Really love Cesar Calvin's balance while running the ball.
Chris Mortensen @mortreportEA: I bet Malcolm Floyd is going to be happy that he's getting some help when Mason Teller joins the team during OTAs.
Matthew Berry @MBerryEA: I don;t see a lot of better options at WR for the Chargers than M. Teller #FantasyWatch
Skip Bayless @SkipBaylessEA: Dexter Bohannon is NOT the guy I'll ever want under center.
Matt Miller @MattMillerEA: Like the pick for the 49ers here. Score some depth at RB.
Mike Hill @MikeHillEA: Heard a lot of scouts call Markeese Rothman fearless.
Matt Miller @MattMillerEA: Really love DeVante Rosselli's balance while running the ball.
Todd McShay @ToddMcShayEA: Indianapolis thrilled with what they saw from Traylor during his process. Only makes sense to take him at #57th
Skip Bayless @SkipBaylessEA: Will Gareef Nelson go into the hall of fame or will he end up in the hall of very good?
Adam Schefter @AdamSchefterEA: Robb Angle very well could be the top option at WR for the Rams next season.
Mark Schlereth @MarkSchlerethEA: Be interesting to see Donald Virgil in a pro-style offense.
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: See Erin Commodore helping a lo on play-action pays.
Robert Flores @RoFloEA: Love the draft more as it gets deeper. McShay just teaches me over and over again.
Mark Schlereth @MarkSchlerethEA: Doran Hartman is a tough kid. That will help him.

Mark Schlereth @MarkSchlerethEA: Sit and learn everything you can Erik Redman.
Matt Miller @MattMillerEA: Question Justin Lampley's ability to create separation in NFL.
Todd McShay @ToddMcShayEA: I do believe Deone Drovin will be able to help on third downs.
Adam Schefter @AdmaSchefterEA: Even with development time, not sure how B. Townsend will help Titans that much.
Todd McShay @ToddMcShayEA: Believe Carson Barut can be an excellent backup.
Matt Miller @MattMillerEA: Ferlando Jennings has to get better at finishing runs with more cosistency.
Mark Schlereth @MarkSchlerethEA: Like the value of Madison Tabar at this point.
Ross Tucker @RossTuckerEA: Not sure how others feel, but I think Treis Fender has some nimble feet.
Matt Miller @MattMillerEA: If Rocco Harpole can stay disciplined, he can be a solid QB at this level.
Mark Schlereth @MarkSchlerethEA: If Kaseem Lovell is a high-effort guy, he'll be able to help out.

Just like in free agency, the New England Patriots didn't make any exciting picks during the 2014 NFL Draft. While picking quarterback Rocco Harpole in the fifth round was a little surprising, the feeling is New England didn't do enough to make their team better. The one thing that can be agreed upon is that the team will have plenty of depth on the roster. Despite the lackluster picks New England made, there were a couple that might show promise.

Both Vince Wilfork and Tommy Kelly are heading into the final year of their contracts and neither of them are getting any younger. While it's asking a lot for a rookie to try and eventually fill Wilfork's shoes, New England's first round pick Sam Drummond looks like a player that the Patriots ca develop. Jelani Gibbs, the teams second round draft choice, was a questionable choice considering the other players that New England missed by choosing him. With the team having signed Craig Robertson and Arthur Moats during free agency, it appears as though New England is trying to set up some serious competition at that position.

The inside linebacker spot isn't the only position that will see some competition. With Ryan Mallett in the last year of his deal, it's time for New England to see if either he or fifth round draft choice Rocco Harpole can succeed Tom Brady. Brady isn't getting any younger and if last seasons numbers are any indication, it looks like he's on the downside of his career. It would be better for New England to find a suitable replacement for Brady now than to wait and be stuck scrambling for a quality quarterback in the future.

The future of the offensive line is also up in the air. Nate Solder, Marcus Cannon and Dan Connelly are heading into the final year of their contracts. With Solder playing as well as he has, it might be hard for the team to hold onto him. Along with that, New England failed to address the hole left at the center position during free agency and the draft. The runningbacks fit into this category as well, with Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and Brandon Bolden all in the final years of their contracts.

While New England's draft wasn't terrible, it appears that the team didn't address it's areas of most concern. New England won't take a step back when they have players like Brady, Wilfork, Aqib Talib and Steven Ridley to rely upon, but it doesn't look like the team made any meaningful steps to improve upon their 2013 campaign.
