MILWAUKEE - Called up a week into the season, catcher Tim McCarver went hitless in his first two games.

"I guess 0-for-7 didn't discourage them from keeping me in the lineup," McCarver said. "And I started hitting."

McCarver hasn't really stopped.

At the All-Star break, he was blasting away to the tune a league-leading .345 batting average.

McCarver (12 homers, 58 RBIs) and the booming bat of SS Willie Wells (23 HRs and 69 runs driven in) have given the Brewers the best record in baseball at 55-41, 3.5 games ahead of the Cardinals in the NL Central.

The duo has made up for the loss of Ken Griffey, who has played just 33 games after hurting his knee.

While Wells will start for the NL, McCarver was not chosen for the team.

"That just makes me more determined to get there next year," McCarver says.

The AL won 4-3.

Post-break sees Milwaukee visiting Washington Friday.
