Re: NHL 15: E3 Trailer
Guys, we've seen A MINUTE of the game, from angles that we'll never play the game from, not running live, edited to highlight certain aspects while ignoring others, intended to give a vague idea of what the graphics will look like. It's a little early to declare the game a bust and all the developers liars.Comment

Re: NHL 15: E3 Trailer and Details
It seriously feels like people can simply not be pleased. Seriously guys, this game gets better every singe year (with small improvements I'll admit) but improvements nonetheless.
If you have complaints, which it's seems like most of you do, then don't pick it up. It's as simple as that. True fans of the series will appreciate the work that goes into the game and the great improvements the EA team added it.
However, this is an honest question and I really want you as well as anyone else to answer it. Since NHL 10 what are the big improvements they have made? The only one off the top of my head is skating. Other than that, changing the physics engine two or three times, and very small AI upgrades, it's all been stuff that isn't even relevant to NHL gameplay. Do you seriously think the new fighting engine, goalie fights, glass breaking, etc. really improve this game the amount it should? I guess I just don't see where the improvements are, so if you would, please list what has improved since NHL 10. I say NHL 10 only because that's the year that I think the series stopped it's improvements.NHL-Minnesota Wild

Re: NHL 15: E3 Trailer and Details
I agree with you on two things. 1. People shouldn't nitpick over this trailer. 2. Most of the posts are negative about this game, including myself. That's for pretty good reason though most of the time.

I liked the new fighting engine myself, I thought it made the fights themselves more immersive and more in the player's control rather than just tapping a button trying to knock the other guy out.
Off the top of my head of improvements since 10, Skating, AI (though still not where it needs to be with neutral zone pressure) AI tender logic, physics, visuals, incidental contact. less sure fire money goals offline (again I don't play online can't judge there) HUT & Be a Pro for those that like those types of modes,That's just off the top of my head.
Do you play sports games to have fun or to pick apart every yearly iteration for not being a perfect representation of real life?Comment

Actually.. After seeing both trailers I think madden looks Arcade-like and cartoonish and NHL looks more real.Comment

Here we go. Yes people complain about Joe Thornton not looking like Thornton and player model equipment, etc. That's all people have to go on. You would think that if you release something that small, it should be correct. Everything looks nice in slow mo and zoomed in. Throw in some Emrick yelling and you have the "trailer". All of that stuff they debuted is in 14. The biggest problem I have with the series is they don't improve enough, but they claim everything is scrapped every year. How many years did we have new physics engine in the 360/ps3 era? 4? Puck physics were the worst they have ever been in 14.
Still not sure why the current gen system limitations mean we can't get some of the options and nuances we had in ps2/xbox days. Were those systems stronger than current ones?
Back to the trailer, it was rather blah. If you cut down the sound it looks like 10-14 all over again. I'm glad you can keep running guys down from behind, they must have taken that from Madden. Puck also looks really easy to roof. Goaltender animations still need help.PSN:BrrbisBrrComment

With the exception of AI and physics improvements, how much more like hockey does the game need to get before you'd be able to enjoy it?

I agree the fighting engine was done pretty well when I tried the game out, but how often do fights happen? Not often. Instead of them fixing board play so players no longer kick a puck the same speed as the puck can be passed with a stick, they add fighting. To me that just doesn't seem logical. Board play happens throughout the course of the game a lot more than fighting yet fighting gets fixed and board play has been the exact same since it was put into the game. To me those are the decisions that kill this game, and the reason it gets hated on. Instead of fixing the dump in glitch, they put out tuners and patches to "fix" other things. They put in the most rare occurrences seen in hockey, instead of fixing or implementing the most seen occurrences in hockey. I just don't see improvement as adding in rare occurrences, only to leave the most basic things untouched or not implemented into the game.Last edited by bwiggy33; 06-09-2014, 05:49 PM.NHL-Minnesota Wild

Re: NHL 15: E3 Trailer and Details - Release Date Set For September 9th
Most people (especially EA devs) think that in order to have a fun sports game, you need to have more "fun features". Making everyone get used to the flashiness and big hits isn't the right way to go. Yes it's amazing to pull off a great deke in a one on one situation but in real life players don't pull off amazing dekes every single breakaway or skating through each zone. When Drew Doughty pulled off that sick through the legs deke to score it is an ESPN Top Ten play. In NHL as we know it now we pull those plays off at least 5 times a game between the 2 teams playing.
What needs to happen in sports video games especially with the power in these systems is that they need to make the game play how it's played in real life. It shouldn't be so easy to skate past somebody. There should be way more dumps and chasing, neutral zone play, disparity between strong forechecking teams like the Kings or fast teams like the Rangers. The Kings are much slower than the rangers and it shows. But you won't see that in NHL.
By having more realistic and challenging game it allows players to actually have to try and beat their opponent by using strategy or your teams strengths to win. It feels a lot better when I score a goal in a 0-0 match late in the 3rd during a tough game rather than scoring 8 total goals purely by weaving through the defense then either 3-move deking the goalie or passing across for a one timer every single time. People would be so frustrated in a defensive battle and complain the game is too hard which is why we probably won't see a realistic representation of sports and it's sad.
There needs to be way more board play, less tripping & charging penalties, and much more stick lifting. With stick lifting it should probably be more of an automatic thing and the player with the puck has to try and keep control using the right stick. The puck should never be attached to the stick. I know it's late but I think passing and shooting should be switched around. In order to pass you should flick the right stick in the direction of where you want it. To shoot you hold RT. Dumping is moving the right stick to the left or right and flicking upward. How quickly you flick the stick determines how hard/fast/high of a dump it is.
With kinect you can take away line changes using the face buttons and have verbal switching allowing you to "be the coach". And find a new way to use the face buttons for something new. Maybe the face buttons could be used for more ways to stick check or some advanced way to skate by holding it.

Re: NHL 15: E3 Trailer and Details - Release Date Set For September 9th
Everyone wants as much control as possible. But in a video game you cannot control every aspect of a sport the way you ca in real life. Just because I can TRY to deke with Chara doesn't mean I should be able to do it effectively. It is impossible to poke check/stick check/stick lift as much as a real NHL player defending the puck. If you try to in NHL now you get a tripping or high stick penalty. Yes it happens but not as often. Boarding shouldn't be called as much either but then again the reason that happens is because there's no way to pin a guy to the board after a dump without using the board button (which is soft) or using the "hit stick" and destroying the guy. Defenders shouldn't give the offense so much space as it is now but at the same time it shouldn't be that easy to get the puck. By using the right stick for passing you can pass quicker and keep the puck in your control. To deke hold RB and use the right stick to deke as we do nowComment

Re: NHL 15: E3 Trailer and Details
I play sports games to have fun. Why the hell would I pay $60 to play something that I don't enjoy (hence the reason I never bought 14), only to just pick apart. You seem to be under the assumption that I just love picking apart the game. You have no idea how much I hate that. I use this forum as a way to release my anger because of how frustrating this game is. MLB The Show is a game that I have pure enjoyment. The game has it's faults, but it is so much like the real life sport that the small faults aren't nearly as big because the gameplay is good.
I agree the fighting engine was done pretty well when I tried the game out, but how often do fights happen? Not often. Considering your only posts on the NHL forum are gripes and some of them along the lines of borderline nitpicks, that's the impression you tend to leave. Don't take me the wrong way bwigs, you're entitled to your opinion, you're certainly entitled to rip the game a new one til the cows come home if that's your fancy. As repetitive as it gets after awhile.
I certainly agree with some of the gripes, neutral zone pressure by the AI CPU control teams more so than anything for sure. But at the end of the day, the game is fun enough and realistic enough with the slider set I use, that the 60 bones for ME is justified.
As for things like board play what truly do you want them to do with what they can possibly do in a video game? 5 player scrums on the boards all shuffling around? Maybe have animations where the puck ping pongs between a players skates to "simulate a puck battle?" Honestly what do you expect out of a video game trying to recreate the arguably toughest of all sports to recreate in this medium?
Again and even I'm tired of repeating it because I'm sure it gets as old for you guys to hear as I am of saying it, with 512 megs of ram what did you honestly expect as to a wall of where they could go last gen? I was actually surprised the physics got as far as they did on the PS3/360 because really, both of those systems as much as I've enjoyed owning them both at various times, are under powered and not very impressive over all.
I may be spoiled having always tried to stay near high end PC wise and enjoying better visuals at a higher resolution and frame rate than either console could muster that I never fell pray to NEXT GEN THIS NEXT GEN THAT! I still haven't with the PS4 or Xbone as while they're both more powerful than the PS3 and 360 respectively, they both still pale in comparison to a high end PC. When you also take into consideration the PS4 and Xbone have the equivalent of a ATI 7000 series video card in them and we're two generations of video cards beyond that at the PC level, its not hard to continue to not buy into the NEXT GEN! hype.
We've seen one sizzle trailer and a few screen shots, and already the same vocal few are already nitpicking before we've even seen 5 on 5 actual footage that isn't cut up to death for trailer purposes.
Do I expect some improvements going forward? Yes, I've stated as such, I do expect AI improvements, 8 gigs of ram is a substantial amount over last gen. They have more room for more complicated run routines, which would hopefully include better AI play over all. That being said? Even if NHL on this gen of consoles is just a prettier NHL 14 with better crowds, presentation and arenas? I actually wouldn't be all that upset over it because fortunately I enjoy the game enough where it is at the moment gameplay wise. I actually feel bad for those who can't get any enjoyment out of NHL 14 either because of a floaty puck on dump ins or because the board play and animations aren't to their liking.Last edited by SpectralThundr; 06-09-2014, 06:30 PM.Comment

If it looks like that in-game, this will give 2K a run for its money. I'm stunned. I also hope the new physics system pans out well. I can see good times on the horizon.
