Winner. I buy the game every year and enjoy it but it's never a hugely satisfying experience. It's hockey and it's the best/only option I have. I have a hockey addiction. I already know I'll be disappointed again this year, but it won't be goalies or goal variety or lack of penalties or even aesthetics like player models. It will be every single player playing exactly the same and the computer using Emelin to catch up to me when Ive got Hagelin fresh off the bench on a rush.

Re: NHL 15: Hands-On Impressions
It very well could be an issue online, I don't play online and use custom sliders. Really the only aspect of the game that bothers me is the lack of neutral zone play and the occasional whacky physics with the puck.I play mostly online, in a full gm connected with only a few computer teams, so I can't speak so much on CPU calls. I can say that I reitterate my original point about hitting from behind, as it is a HUGE problem online. Open ice hits in the back, most of which should be called hitting from behind, charging, holding something. The NHL Dev team seems to believe you can only be called for hitting from behind if you are up against the boards, and this is wrong. You cannot hit a player in the back at all, against the boards, it is usually called boarding, in open icem it is called checking from behind. Program it correctly for once.
Granted I'm no where near as critical or as nitpicky as some are though in general regardless of what sport series be it hockey, baseball or what have you, or which publisher is on the front of the box, so for me if the AI is a bit better in the neutral zone this year when appropriate and the physics on PS4 are as good as they're trumping them up to be, I'll be pretty happy.
All the new presentation stuff like 4 refs on the ice and the new play by play and NBC integration (btw that NBC swipe in that quick youtube Squintz was kind enough to share is pretty neat) for me is just icing on the cake for a game I enjoy quite a bit already.Comment

Re: NHL 15: Hands-On Impressions
Agreed 100%. I think they perfected menus back on the NES. I am not sure why developers feel the need to get creative in this department? 2K was annoying with their right stick menu thing a few years back, and I think I hate the Windows 8 style even more.I gotta say I am not a big fan of the whol window tiles thing, and then having to move the right stick in tiles to get different modes, stuff just winds up hidden and hard to get there. Keep menus simple. I can navigate it, but this realy isn't a change I welcome.Comment

A few things I'm curious about
What about odd man rushes ? The AI I was with while on an odd man rush always had no idea what to do, and just rushed the net, never opening up for a pass
In Be a GM, drafting was ridiculous - you would never find late round gems, and a change in "potential" could be good for such instances, if this wasn't fixed
And on that note, I'm still waiting on the hiring of coaches and other bench employees and how different coaches could affect different teams, but I suspect that's ahead of our time stillComment

Re: NHL 15: Hands-On Impressions
But the thing though is that before NHL12, this wasn't even a problem, it suddenly became a problem in NHL12 and has still happened in 13 and 14 and EA just ignores it as if hockey rarely has penalties or somethingI feel like the biggest problem is that you (and the CPU) aren't really forced to do much to trigger penalties.
Spamming the poke check button used to mean tripping calls, but they seem to have done away with that. Body checking infractions are rarely called. Hooking and slashing only seems to be called when you press stick lift from behind the player. Holding only gets called if you pin against the boards for too long.
It's really a problem in all EA Sports games. I wouldn't mind seeing some canned penalty/foul animations being triggered through some combination of player ratings and context, but perhaps I'm in the minority there.Comment

Still concerned about lack of differentiation between star players/teams and 4th liners.Comment

Re: NHL 15: Hands-On Impressions
it makes us wonder...how difficult is it to include this 5-man celebration in the game? It was there in the past right EA?Comment

Re: NHL 15: Hands-On Impressions
Who knows? May be a frame rate issue. It may be a clipping issue. Or it may just not be a priority to them. If it were easy to implement you would assume it would be in, but they never address what the issue is, which is part of the problem to me.
My fear would be that when they do implement it, finally, that it will just be a cut scene and get repetitive. That may be another reason why it isn't in yet, perhaps it just didn't look or work right.Comment
