Re: Whatever Happened to the Patriot Way - A Madden NFL 25 New England Patriots CFM

After three weeks of football, there are teams that are still yet to win a game, and teams that are yet to lose a game. Falling to a 0-4 hole after the first quarter of the season won't make getting through the rest of the year any easier. The margin for error becomes much smaller. Only five teams have made the playoffs after an 0-3 start. For the teams still seeking their first win of the year, there's no time like the present.

For a team that has been known for it's defense, the Pittsburgh Steelers haven't been playing much of it this season. On Sunday, they'll take their 28th ranked defense to M&T Bank Stadium to play the Baltimore Ravens. The Steelers' offense hasn't been much help either. A rivalry game has a way of bringing out the best in a team. The Steelers will need to tap into that if they hope to beat the Ravens on Sunday.

If there were a time to take advantage of the Atlanta Falcons, it would be now. They've managed to go 3-0 without receiver Roddy White, but Julio Jones is now set to miss the next few games. Something else that is impressive about the Falcons' start is that Steven Jackson missed the first two games. Does that make the Falcons a gritty team or an overachieving team? The Detroit Lions head coach Demetrius Turner hopes that it's the latter. Will Reggie Bush, Calvin Johnson and Matthew Stafford be enough to end the Falcons' winning streak? With the Falcons missing their top two receivers, along with two starting offensive linemen, the Lions think that this may be the perfect time to do so.

      New England Patriots Scouting Report

The New England Patriots continue their scouting spree by looking at some running backs this week. It appears that there could be a lot of change in store for the Patriots on offense. Even more than they had in the 2013 offseason. Stevan Ridley, Shane Vereen and Brandon Bolden are all in the final year of their contracts. If push comes to shove and the Patriots lose all three backs, is a rookie the way to go? The team is hoping it doesn't get that far. In case they do need to draft a running back when the 2015 NFL Draft comes around, there are some good prospects available.

      Media Reaction
Susannah Collins - @SCollinsEA: You SEE that!? Tell me you saw that! DT Stacy Nicholas just rammed his way through to block that FG and win the game.
Trey Wingo - @WingozEA: Ole Miss might be on a losing streak, but no one's blaming the defense. DE Malaki Paris is still a standout.

Re: Whatever Happened to the Patriot Way - A Madden NFL 25 New England Patriots CFM

It's only week four of the 2014 NFL season and some big names have already succumb to injury. Some teams are fortunate enough to get their key players back. For the Miami Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars, it gives their players a little extra time to get back up to game speed, as they both have byes this week.

The New England Patriots signed running back Jackie Battle to the squad this week. Battle played for the Patriots during the preseason and showed promise. With the running back lineup already set, the team decided to focus on other area of the roster. With Stevan Ridley already ahead of last year's pace in carries, the wanted another back to some pressure off Ridley. Jerod Mayo being placed on injured reserve freed the roster spot needed for the tea to sign Battle.

        Media Reaction
Skip Bayless - @SkipBaylessEA: Can't say enough how HUGE it is to get Maurkice Pouncey back on the field.
Mark Schlereth - @MarkSchlerethEA: Redskins will have one less active roster spot to fill with Robert Griffin lll returning this week.
Adam Schefter - @AdamSchefterEA: Jaguars updated their injury report. Folks should expect to see C. Shorts lll this week.
Ross Tucker - @RossTuckerEA: It's alays all hands on deck in the NFL so getting back Antoine Bethea will help this week.
Skip Bayless - @SkipBaylessEA: A. Cason has been practicing all week so no reason to believe he won't play this week.

            Game Notes
Offensively, the San Diego Chargers are a very poor team. After three games, they've scored only two offensive touchdowns with an offense that is tied for 21st. After three games, the team only has four touchdowns. Despite the Chargers' deficiencies on offense, the New England Patriots still have a poor passing defense that ranked 24th in the league. With Eddie Royal still out with a broken jaw, rookie Mason Teller may play a bigger role in this game. Also, look for Danny Woodhead to continue to get the majority of the snaps at running back with Ryan Mathews still recovering from a ruptured disk. Mathews has been out since week three of the preseason.

            Extra Notes
A change has been made in the starting lineup this week. With Danny Amendola returning from his rib injury, he'll start alongside Josh Boyce. Kenbrell Thompkins has been bumped down to the third wide receiver position and Aaron Dobson has been replaced in the lineup by rookie Ivan Cross.

There's no other way to describe the effort by the New England Patriots than dominating. At the rate this team is going, they may very well shatter the scoring record. It's not only on offense that the Patriots look good, but the defense is playing better every week. All of this came together at the wrong time for the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.

The defense did what it's been doing for the past couple of games, getting stops on third down. In fact, since allowing the Miami Dolphins to convert 53% of their third down attempts in week one, New England has held it's opponents to 17% on third down conversions. While the Chargers fared slightly better in this category, their offense still found itself marching off the field after most of their third down attempts. Also, the player that looked like he would be the weak link on the defense has been making plays so far.

Despite struggling against the Patriots' pass defense, Philip Rivers managed to find Antonio Gates often in the second half.

After the offseason and the draft, many in New England were concerned that the Patriots secondary went unchanged from last year. The Patriots pass defense was ranked 32nd in the league at the end of the 2013 season. Although the team's pass defense sat at 24th coming into the game, there has been a noticeable difference in the way the secondary plays. Third year cornerback Alfonzo Dennard is a big reason why. Dennard got his fourth interception of the year against the Chargers and Philip Rivers was held to just 181 passing yards in the game. Aqib Talib also got an interception in the game. Despite the Patriots' success against the pass, they did have trouble defending tight end Antonio Gates later in the game. Gates finished the game with 7 receptions for 98 yards. Defending the eight time Pro Bowler wasn't the only issue the Patriots had.

Cornerback Aqib Talib intercepts a pass from Philip Rivers intended for Golden Tate.

The duo of Tommy Kelly and Vince Wilfork hasn't looked as imposing as it did last year. While the Patriots' run defense is still formidable, they have been giving more yards to opponents this year. Former Patriot Danny Woodhead took advantage of some of the holes in the Patriots' defense, rushing for 86 yards on 15 carries. Woodhead wouldn't get a chance to do anymore damage to the Patriots since his team was facing a 27-3 deficit at half time. That deficit for the Chargers gave running back Stevan Ridley more opportunities to carry the ball in the second half.

Ridley's has been running with a purpose since week two. Over the last two games, he has 49 carries for 339 yards and 4 touchdowns. The running game has helped the Patriots maintain drives and kept the down and distance manageable. The Chargers 32nd ranked run defense may have played a part in the Patriots' success on the ground. That combined with Tom Brady playing a great game made for a sorry afternoon for the Chargers.

Stevan Ridley put toether another impressive performance on Sunday rushing for 147 yards and 3 touchdowns.

After Sunday's win in San Diego, the Patriots now head back to the east coast to take on a tough Buffalo Bills team. The defense will be a key factor in determining whether or not the Patriots can continue to play at this level. While losing Mayo for the season hasn't effected the team yet, the Patriots would like to think they've prepared for this situation with the depth they have at the linebacker position. The Bills may be the opponent to test if the team is truly ready to play without Mayo.

              Game Ball/Extra Reps

              Game Ball
Danny Amendola: Amendola makes his season debut for the Patriots and does not disappoint, recording 5 catches for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Stephen Gostkowski: The veteran kicker makes all of his field goals, including a 56 yard kick in the first quarter.

Stevan Ridley: Ridley proves he is the number one running back for the team with another impressive game.

Michael Buchanan/Rob Ninkovich: Ninkovich and Buchanan, along with Chandler Jones, make life difficult for quarterback Philip Rivers. Both Buchanan and Ninkovich get two sacks in the game.

Arthur Moats: Moats does a good job starting in place of injured linebacker Jerod Mayo, recording 5 total tackles in the game.

              Extra Reps
Kenbrell Thompkins: Thompkins continues to play poorly, recording only one catch in the game.

Shane Vereen: Vereen has a good game overall, but is lucky when he recovers his own muffed punt.

              Media Reaction
Matt Miller - @MattMillerEA: Are people seriously getting excited about the Patriots going 4-0? In the words of my friend's kid: "chillax".

Re: Whatever Happened to the Patriot Way - A Madden NFL 25 New England Patriots CFM

A quarter of the 2014 NFL season has already passed and things look like they might be taking shape. The Cleveland Browns, Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots are all undefeated. The most surprising team among the ranks of the unbeaten are the Browns who finished with a 5-11 record last year. on the other end of the spectrum, you have the Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Dallas Cowboys, Jacksonville, Jaguars and Miami Dolphins all without a win. An 0-4 record for the Panthers and the Cowboys puts their playoff hopes in jeopardy. Also, they seem to be heading in the opposite direction of the Browns. Last year, both the Cowboys and the Panthers finished with a 11-5 record. Dallas even won the NFC East last year. What makes the situation in Dallas even more strange is the fact that Tony Romo was traded during the preseason. Romo's new team, the Denver Broncos, currently are second in their division with a 3-1 record. A new week gives all of these teams a new opportunity to turn things around while the undefeated teams will hope to continue to do well.

As mentioned earlier, the Cleveland Browns have been shockingly good this year, sort of. Rookie quarterback Chadd Waisome has helped keep things running in place of injured quarterback Brandon Weeden. Despite that, their offense is ranked last in the league. Luckily, the Browns have the 4th ranked defense to rely upon. That formula won't help them win games for too long however. The Browns desperately need some more production from their running game as well. Maybe it will be enough to defeat the Oakland Raiders this week. Against better teams in the NFL, they may not be so lucky.

With the Atlanta Falcons reeling becuase of injuries, now would be a perfect time to strike. Unfortunately, neither the New Orleans Saints nor the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are playing the Falcons this week. The Saints have helped their cause by winning their last two games and Drew Brees has been a big part of it with his league leading 1,310 passing yards. The Buccaneers will hope to avoid their first losing streak of the season when they travel to New Orleans Sunday. In order to do that, they'll need quarterback Mike Glennon to play better. Glennon is yet to throw a touchdown pass this season. If he wants to establish himself as a long-term starting quarterback in this league, winning on Sunday would be a good way to go.

                              New England Patriots Scouting Report

With Brandon Spikes now a Washington Redskin and Jerod Mayo on injured reserve, the New England Patriots are without two of their starting linebackers from last season. Dont'a Hightower is currently playing out of position at inside linebacker. The Patriots defense has been playing better, but Hightowers production has slipped. To add on top of that, the Patriots aren't sure rookie Jelani Gibbs is ready to step into a starting role. For the time being, the linebacker situation for the team is in flux. While a draft pick isn't guaranteed to be a star right away, the scouts still have to do their due diligence when looking at players. Hopefully the Patriots scout and plan better than they did last year when looking at the inside linebacker position.

The 4-0 Green Bay Packers take on the 0-3 Chicago Bears this week in what looks like a lopsided game. If the Pittsburgh Steelers going to M&T Bank Stadium to defeat the Baltimore Ravens last week is any indication of what could happen, that means the Bears have some hope. This won't be easy by any stretch of the imagination. The combination of Randall Cobb and Jordy Nelson have been lethal for opposing defense. With the Bears currently ranked 29th on offense, they'll have to rely on their defense, which is 2nd in the league, to help them get the win.

Two notable players returning from injuries this week are Russell Okung and C.J. Spiller. Spiller is returning just in time for a big game against the New England Patriots this weekend. The only problem with these players in particular is that they have missed many games because of injuries. Last season, Okung missed seven games while Spiller missed six. Okung has only played in one game this season.

Mark Schlereth - @MarkSchlerethEA: If thre's a team that's going to trip up the Packers, look to the Bears. In rivalry games anything can happen.
Chris Mortensen - @mortreportEA: Seahawks will have Russell Okung back this week.
Skip Bayless - @SkipBaylessEA: G. McCoy has been practicing all week so no reason to believe he won't play.
Ross Tucker - @RossTuckerEA: It's always all hands on deck in the NFL so getting back C.J. Spiller will help this week.
