    PS4: Offseason Update Roster

    Roster name: Offseason Roster
    PS4 user: iTofutastic

No need to search for the roster, it's at the top of the roster list for PS4.

Special thanks to FR176 (PSN: LuNY176) for all the work that was completed keeping the roster up to date after my interest in fixing the day to day transactions fizzled out in August. Incredible job.

I’ve been keeping a roster all year that’s mostly included transactions before 2K made updates with minor tweaks based on statistics and verifiable information.

Now that the season is over and the final mostly injury free roster has been released! I wanted to take this opportunity to put more time into the roster than previous versions.

When adjusting players, I wanted to emulate the basic pattern that 2K uses for ratings. Below are OS blog posts explaining the all methods used when making player modifications, ratings changes or signature skill changes:
And of course it includes verified off season moves.

    == FAQ ==

Does this roster include the rookies from the draft?
This roster does not include players from the 2014 NBA Draft. Sorry, without create-a-player there isn't a good solution and I do not like the idea of using legend/euro placeholders.

Have all the trades and new contracts been added?
I should be up to date, however it's possible I missed some. Here's a spreadsheet with everything I have in terms of transactions and signings: Google Doc

Feel free to add a transaction that are incorrect or need to be added, then mark the completed column as FALSE. Or just post what I'm missing in the thread, whatever is easy for you.

A few notes regarding the spreadsheet:
    • The option I have listed isn't necessarily what I used. It's just what the contract is (as best I know).
    • The contract column that has values such as 'Larry Bird Exceptions' aren't necessarily true. I had started doing them all correct, then just got lazy, trying to make sure I had the right increase percentage.
    • Not all contracts have the maximum increases, to fix those contract, you can use the override columns on the far right.

Does this roster include updated gear changes?
For the most part it does not. However, if you post it I'll fix it, so please post it.

    You forgot XXXXXX.
Post it in the thread and I'll update it if it's valid and citable.

Why just mimic what 2K does with their roster? We all know it's flawed?
    There are two reasons:
    1. MyGM takes substantially more work to simulate through and then record results than Association mode did. Unfortunately, I simply do not have the time to both test MyGM and build a roster this year and unfortunately I do not know of any posts that include test results or formulas to greater improve realism, such as this last gen post. Rather than arbitrarily guessing, I think it's better to just mimic 2K's roster in terms of formulas and qualifications and iron out some of their inconsistencies along the way.
    2. I put limitations on who I edited, I did not edit players with tiny sample sizes, so it's important to keep the unedited players consistent with the edited players.

Why are so few attributes and signature skills edited? Surely more can be done, especially Close Shot, Steal, Block and Pass.
I have time constraints and having to manually edit rather than using something like REDitor (available for last gen and PC) makes roster editing more burdensome. I tried to do the ratings that were important based on feedback from NBA 2K14 players I played with. I have a few more on my short list that I may or may not get to.

Yes, I will work on that next, with the exception of daily player movement updates.

Good spot, can't believe I missed that. Updated it.

First of all, this deserves to be one of the most downloaded rosters of 2K share. Great effort you have put into this project.

Q: Which slider set do you recommend? I've seen you have adjusted mid and 3's.

Q2: Did you update a lot of accessories? I notice most players have their default 2K accessories on like CP3 (Long sleeves on his left, short on his right) to name one.

Anyway, minor queries on otherwise an already awesome roster set.

Updated and put Richard Jefferson on the Mavs.

In theory, and hopefully in practice, it should play just like the default roster except more consistent. Less, "he shot better/worse than that player this year" type of moments. So, if there is a slider set you'd prefer with a default roster or close to default roster, then I would recommend that slider. I didn't build the roster with a slider in mind.

Yea, I definitely admit to accessories being a weakness. I spent a majority of my time working on evening out ratings, signature skills and trying to keep up with the offseason.

If you have suggestions, preferably citable, I'm definitely willing to make changes.

Trade with three team Houston, Washington e New Orleans.
Houston get Trevor Ariza and Alonzo Gee.
Washington get Melvin Ely from Pelicans.
New Orleans get Omer Asik and Omri Casspi.

Moved Mirotic to Chicago. Not really sure how to approach ratings adjustment from Euro League to NBA. Found this old Hollinger article, but it doesn't help much. Maybe I'll dig deeper later.

For now I've adjusted his free throw, that's easy. I'm not sure how well 3pt translates, but if the percentage doesn't drop much than 83 is about right. Dropped both awareness ratings by 15. Felt like a very 2K thing to do as an easy fix to get the rating down. lol

just curious why anderson varejao has an 89 rating for a mid range shot? im a cavs fan and he can hit that shot with some consistency if left wide open but i wasn't sure if 89 was a mistake you made or not.

Varejao on 15+ feet 2 pointers:
                        2012-13: 27/65 .415
                        2013-14: 62/123 .504

To give that some context, in 2013-14, he was 6th in the league among players with over 100 attempts. That is the main driver of the high rating.

As I mentioned in the blog posts I count it as one part 2012-13 and two parts 2013-14.

So I used 151/311 for 48.55%, using the formula from the Finding a "Shot Medium" Formula in the post:

                        112.39 * MedShot% + 34.923
                        112.39 * 48.55% + 34.923 = 89.49 rounded down to 89.

I understand, you probably thinking that it's not fair to give Varejao that rating when there are players who are likely better shooters who shoot a lower percentage due to taking a large number of contested shots. Given I was trying to emulate 2K's formula to some degree, I didn't adjust for size of the shot sample or anything to that effect.

I did wonder in the blog post if 2K did adjust for it, but dismissed it as a consideration since there is clearly no significant adjustment on three pointers. That being said it may be a worthwhile to find the exact mechanics of different ratings (shoot in traffic, shoot off dribble, shooting, etc) and how they work together to try to find a formulas that are very accurate.

There is pull shot data via NBA Stats. However, I don't know of any statistical source that public tracks contested jump shots, but perhaps once more SportVU data is made public that can become a ratings/gameplay debate.

I didn't do most of them, I only did mid range, 3pt, free throw, off reb and def reb. I may or may not do more, given the time it takes to find a formula then manually edit it's hard for me to commit to doing more given it's already mid-July.

I did players that had taken a minimum of 100 shots of that particular shot type in the past 2 years. For rebounds, I made the threshold 800 minutes of play in the past two years. I did make some exceptions; going back an extra year for Rose or peaking at Euro/college free throw stats for players who Free Throw rating is clearly an error such as Darius Miller of the Pelicans.

In any case, manually editing in 2K is tedious, while I don't suspect 2K will ever do it, it'd be cool if there was a pc/mac tool specifically for roster making given the great rosters the community puts together. Manually editing really made me miss using REDitor on last gen.
