Re: Judge Rules In Favor of O'Bannon, NCAA Violates Anti-Trust Law
The appeals wont be that protracted and probably only one more round unless Obannon is really upset about the fact college players cant get outside endorsements. I seriously doubt the Supreme Court is going to be willing to hear this case especially if Obannon wins both rounds.
The ruling doesnt stop the NCAA or the power 5 conferences from creating their own compensation rules related to likeness rights right now. The key here is that the her ruling remains in place and isnt stayed while under appeals. So that means if the appeal process runs past 2015, the NCAA will be forced to institute rules regarding likeness rights compensation anyway.
Also you have to remember that the power 5 conferences want to pay players. They were on the path of breaking off from the NCAA if they werent given some autonomy. So this decision is kind of a win for them. They want the new streams of revenue that this decision will open up and now they dont have to worry about an Obannon like lawsuit that names the conferences as defendants.
I could see EA going down the path they were planning to do this year by going around the NCAA and doing deals with individual schools who pay their players or agreeing to foot some of the costs for some of the mid-level schools. I dont see EA walking away from 80 plus million in revenue while they wait for the appeal process to work its way through.
The last thing I'll say is that this isnt even the big case. We focused on Obannon because its a video game case and this is a video game site but the real case is Kessler. That case could blow up whats left of the NCAA.Comment

Idk how they'd work out what schools get into the game in the future but even if they had to rebuild the game and start with just the Power 5 conference I'd be happy. Although (this will NEVER happen) the one thing I have always wanted was to have every division down to D-III and start from D-III as ur HC and get offers to make it to D-1A....One can dream right?? I think 2017 or 2018 is more of a target year for the game to come out tho.Comment

I think this is the beginning of the end for the NCAA. The power conferences are sick to death of the byzantine rulebook put out by the NCAA where they can't buy an athlete a hamburger unless its under specific circumstances. The attempt to preserve the pretense of amateurism in sports generating millions of dollars is a joke and the NCAA is a corrupt and archaic organization that needs to go away.Comment

Well, the NCAA appealed. Shocking, I know.. Interesting quote from their response,
Does this mean a college football game sooner rather than later?"Further, the Court rejected the plaintiffs’ claims that the NCAA licensed student-athletes' names, images and likenesses to EA Sports or anyone else."
Hope to hear EA respond.Last edited by Mckinley Cash; 08-10-2014, 09:57 AM.Comment

EA is emotionally connected to making money, though, and if they think they can make a decent profit they'll make the game again. They may even be able to license the actual players and use their names and likenesses instead of making generic players with similar skillsets to the real players. That would make the game more attractive to the average gamer who doesn't want to edit names or import rosters, he just wants to play with Jameis Winston at QB for FSU.Comment

Plenty of other games they can make to turn a profit.
My only point was that some seem to think it's a given the game will come back when NCAA always played second fiddle to Madden. Unless they see a HUGE potential for profit they will have no need to make the game again.
Not sure that a game done without some teams or with or without some players is going to be very appeasing.Comment

With the new college football playoff system, there might be enough excitement generated to peak EA's interest; and make a college football game that much more lucrative.Plenty of other games they can make to turn a profit.

Who wouldn't pay for a highly customizable game, containing the power 5 conferences and a playoff system in dynasty mode. TeamBuilder could end up being NCAA Football's saving grace - need the ability to save teams locally and about 75 TB import slots in the game.Comment
