Seattle Mariners - rise to the top!

I've always said "oh maybe I'll post it in the dynasty section" because I'm sure a lot of you guys don't looks at blogs and what not so I've finally decided to post in here. If you follow my blog you'll see everything through the month of April.

Anyway, a little of what to expect, I won't be posting every game and posting box scores or anything. I play every game, but watch parts of it in between. I have updated rosters and sliders (Mizzou/Authentic, thank you)

Anyway, I'll start to post what I have on my blog, and will keep you guys updated for the rest of the franchise.

EDIT: sorry deuce, I might be stealing your thunder just kidding, I will never be as good at you at this, lol.

Re: Seattle Mariners - rise to the top!

    Season Outlook:

I'm feeling very good with the acquisition of all-sta second baseman Robinson Cano, along with the progression if other young guys already in the organization.

Also, I'm really looking forward to the pitching, as we could potentially have not of the best team ERAs ever!

Also, looking forward to the minors and developing guys who will become Seattle legends like Griffey, Martinez and currently King Felix.

Re: Seattle Mariners - rise to the top!

Mariners top-10 prospects going into 2014:

      #1:
RHP Taijuan Walker: AAA Tacoma - ETA: mid-late 2014
A year after being the youngest pitcher in the Southern League, Walker returned to Double-A Jackson to start 2013. Walker fared much better the second time around, pitching his way to Seattle in August for his Major League debut. Walker's youth, athleticism, size and stuff all give him the chance to develop into a front-line Major League starter.
      Other Lists: 100 Prospects (#7) | Top 10 RH pitchers Prospects (#1)

      #2:
OF Alex Jackson: A High Desert - ETA: 2017
Jackson's standout tool is his right-handed power, which he generates with bat speed and strength. Jackson has enough feel for hitting that he could hit for average in the Major Leagues, though he'll have to be sure to curb a tendency for his swing to get long at times -- which causes him to miss hittable fastballs.
      Other Lists: 100 Prospects (#37), Top-10 OF prospects (#4)

      #3
      1B DJ Peterson: A High Desert - ETA: 2016
The Mariners drafted Peterson out of high school in the 33rd round in 2010, but he chose to attend New Mexico instead. The Mariners didn't miss a second chance at him, selecting Peterson 12th overall. Peterson has a quick swing and an advanced approach at the plate. He showed off his impressive power as a professional, hitting 13 home runs in 55 games after signing. Peterson played third base in college, but his future may be across the diamond. He has a good arm and moves better than his size would suggest, but his defense is adequate at best at third base. Peterson's bat will play anywhere, and it should help him move quickly toward Seattle.
      Other Lists: 100 Prospects (#52) | Top 10 3rd base Prospects (#4)

      #4
SS Chris Taylor: AAA Tacoma - ETA: September 2014
Taylor has hit better than expected once out of the unfriendly confines of his college home park. He's shown a knack for being patient and he is using all areas of the field. Taylor has gotten a bit stronger, though power is never going to be a big part of his game. He has excellent baserunning instincts, and he has the range and the hands to play shortstop. Some feel his arm might be better at second or for moving around the infield.

      #5
      RF/LF Gabriel Guerrero: A High Desert - ETA: 2016
There's no question Guerrero has a very high ceiling. He has very good raw tools, including the ability to hit for average and power, though the latter hasn't shown up in games consistently yet. Guerrero is an aggressive hitter, but like his uncle, he tends to make contact more than you think he should -- though some refinement would allow him to tap into that power more. Guerrero runs fairly well, and he has about as strong an outfield arm as you'll find in the Minor Leagues.

      #6
      LF/RF Austin Wilson: A High Desert - ETA: 2016
Wilson is a physical specimen, and he is the kind of player who "looks the part." He has big-time raw power, can run and he has the arm for right field. At the plate, Wilson can be a little bit of a feast-or-famine-type player, and he'll need to make more consistent contact so he can tap into that power more regularly.

      #7
RHP Edwin Diaz: A High Desert - ETA: 2017
Some of it has been physical, with Diaz having put on around 25 pounds of good weight since his high school days. His fastball and slider are his best offerings and there might be more in the tank with the heater as he continues to progress. He's improved his fastball command considerably and the breaking ball is much better than it was, leading to low walk totals and plenty of missed bats. His changeup lags behind, but there is confidence Diaz will master that as well.

      #8
3B/1B/LF/RF Patrick Kivelhan: AA Jackson - ETA: 2015
Kivlehan has the tools to be a run-producing third baseman with the ability to hit for average and plenty of power. He runs well for a guy his size, and he brings a football mentality to his game on a daily basis.

      #9
      RF/LF Gareth Morgan: A High Desert - ETA: 2018
Strong and toolsy, Morgan's raw power is undeniable. He has put on shows in showcase batting practices in the past, and he has the ability to hit the ball out of any ballpark. There are some questions about Morgan's ability to hit enough to tap into that power consistently. He is a solid outfielder with a strong arm, giving him a good profile for right field. The Mariners clearly believed enough in Morgan's bat, and those who dream on him might see a future Giancarlo Stanton type in the future.

      #10
SS Ketel Marte: AA Jackson - ETA: 2016
Pushed aggressively, Marte reached the Class A Advanced California League in 2013 at age 19. The Mariners think he can develop into a top-of-the-order catalyst in the future. If the bat can come along, Marte has the chance to be an everyday shortstop, though a career as a speedy and dynamic utility type is nothing to sneeze at.

        MR Tom Wilhelmsen
        MR Charlie Furbush

Guys who are locked in the bullpen all season:
Maurer, Medina, Wilhelmsen, Furbush, Farquhar, Rodney
Guys who could come up and replace Beimel if he sucks:
Lucas Luetge, Dominic Leone, Todd Coffey, Logan Kensing

        Lineup
        1 CF Austin Jackson
        2 RF/LF Michael Saunders
        3 2B Cano
        4 DH Morales
        5 3B Seager

(Either could be replaced by Justin Smoak)
        7 C Mike Zunino
8 LF Dustin Ackley vs. RHP/RF Chris Denorfia vs. LHP
9 SS Brad Miller (could be replaced by Chris Taylor)

        Full-time bench players
C Humberto Quintero (could be DFA'd and replaced by Jesus Sucre)

        Cant wait!

I have the April report written up, but I'll wait for some of you guys to comment and I'll go from there. I don't want to clog this up other my own stuff, I want discussions to be going on.

Btw, I'll be posting monthly updates. I play every game, so they'll be spaced out. I'll have "special edition" draft-day/ASG/trade-deadline posts as well. I think it'll be really fun for me and hopefully you guys follow along and enjoy it as well.

              Lol seriously!
I'm still getting used to these sliders. It won't seem like it in April, but they're pretty hard. I got lucky a lot. Including two walk offs in April alone by Zunino and Saunders. Saunders' was in his first game off the DL.

Couple more posts and I'll drop the April post!

What Duece said. I'll be following.

I should really just make 5 accounts and make a Phillies 'chise with them so we can get in the game.. I mean if I replace my Sox 'chise with the Phillies we have 2... sounds good right?

Re: Seattle Mariners - rise to the top!

The Mariner finished April 20-7, which is good for 1st in the American League West.

                    Standings:
                    M's: 20-7, -
                    Rangers: 14-14, 6.5GB
                    A's: 14-15, 7GB
                    Angels: 13-14, 7GB
                    Astros: 9-19, 11.5GB

Michael Saunders came off the 15-day DL in mid April and in his first game back, hit a walk off against Oakland. The next game, Mike Zunino hit a walk off home run! The next week, we played 20-innings against Miami and lost when Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run walk off bomb!

                    Here's stats from everyone who plays everyday in April;
                    Austin Jackson: .239, 3 HRs, 13 RBIs
Michael Saunders (missed 15 days with injury: .321, 3 HRs 9 RBIs
                    Cano: .284, 5 HRs, 18 RBI
                    Morales: .179, 5 HR, 13 RBI
                    Seager: .299, 6 HR, 16 RBI
                    Mike Zunino: .241, 5 HR, 10 RBI
                    Brad Miller: .265, 3 HR, 5RBI

                    Here's guys who platoon:

                    Corey Hart: .258, 2 HR, 6 RBI
                    Logan Morrison: .246, 5 HR, 12 RBI

                    Chris Denorfia: .171, 1 HR, 2 RBI
                    Dustin Ackley: .242, 5HR, 14 RBI

Bench players/Guys who've been sent down:
                    Bloomquist: .286, 0 HR, 2 RBI
                    Quintero: .286, 0 HR, 0 RBO
Endy Chavez (AAA currently): .154, 0 HR, 0 RBI

Obviously, guys who could be DFA'd for a roster spot are Chris Denorfia and POSSIBLY Morales. But he could come back to earth.

                    Pitchers:
All I'll do is post W-L records, Ks, and ERA:

                    Felix: 5-0, 1.38 ERA, 58 Ks (!!!)
                    Kuma: 2-1, 1.31 ERA, 39 Ks
                    Paxton: 5-0, 1.66 ERA, 35 Ks
                    Elias: 1-1, 2.67 ERA, 33 Ks
                    Young: 2-2, 5.54 ERA, 14 Ks

LRP Brandon Maurer: 1.66 ERA, 25 Ks

                    MRP Joe Beimel: 4.82 ERA
                    MRP Charlie Furbush: 1.54 ERA
                    MRP Yoervis Medina: 5.63 ERA
                    MRP Wilhelmsen: 2.25 ERA

                    SU: Farquhar: 4.82 ERA

                    CP: Rodney: 1.13 ERA, 6/6 SV/SVO

Obviously the bullpen has come back down to earth... My top three (Felix, Kuma, Paxton) are all three performing Cy-Young-consideration-well. Elia is holding down the 4 spot and Youmg could be DFA'd if he doesn't pick it up.

                    AAA:
Taijuan Walker, Erasmo Ramiriez, and Blake Beavan, could all replace Chris Young. They're all on the 40-man, while the #4/5 guy, Danny Hultzen and Jordan Pries is holding steady.

In the bullpen, we have Logan Kensing, Lucas Luetge, , Dominic Leone, and Todd Coffey knocking on Seattle's door from Tacoma. They're all on the 40-man.

Offensively, James Jones, Stefen Romero, Chris Taylor, Justin Smoak, Jesus Sucre, Franklin Gutierrez, Emdy Chavez, and Xavier Henry could all potentially earn a call up if guys in Seattle don't perform.
I pretty much just gave away my 40-man roster, lol

In AA, guys like Ketel Marte, Ji-Man Choi, and Patrick Kivelhan are holding down the fort in Jackson offensively. The pitching hasn't been too great, as guys like Andrew Carraway (former top-prospect) and Tyler Pike, Amthony Fernandez, Steve Landazuri, and James Gilheeny have struggled.
In the AA bullpen, Emilio Pagan and Jordan shippers have succeeded while everyone else has struggled.

                    Notable players in A:
                    Alex Jackson
                    DJ Peterson
                    Edwin Diaz
                    Gabe Guerrero
                    Austin Wilson
                    Gareth Morgan
                    Luis Gohara
                    Tyler O'Neil
                    Victor Sanchez

I'll give another update at the end of May!
                    Go M's!

Re: Seattle Mariners - rise to the top!

AHHHHHH, what a month of May! The mariners went 13-16, to push their overall record to 33-24. We still lead the division, but now only by one game over the Athletics.

                      M's 33-24
                      A'a 32-25 1GB
                      Angels 27-29 5.5GB
                      Rangers 25-32 8GB
                      Astros 23-35 10.5GB

                      Notable Mariners news:
Danny Hultzen is OUT FOR THE YEAR. He's been placed on the 60 day DL where he will be for the rest of the season. He'll finish the year with a 2-2 record and a 4.83 ERA with 20 Ks in 31.2 IP. SEE YA NEXT YEAR, Danny.
To take his spot in the AAA rotation, we called up Anthony Fernandez from AA. His current AAA stats are 1-1, 3.64 ERA, 33/10 K/BB, in 29.2 IP. He's actually been more valuable than Hultzen was in AAA.
To take Fernandez's spot in the AA rotation is M's #20 prospect Lars Huijer. So far in AA he's 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA and a 17/16 K/BB rate which is alarming. He has pitched 29.1 innings.

In other news, in mid-May, the Mariners released 29-year old RP Nick Hill, who was spending his days in the bullpen of AA Jackson. This was done to free up a roster spot for returning former Mariner Casper Wells! The Mariners signed him to a one year deal for the rest of this year worth 750K with a team option for 2015.
He's a 29 year-old LF/RF who used to roam the outfield at safeco. He's started out in Jackson, and so far he's batting .274 with one home run and 7 RBIs in 19 games.

Lastly, AA 1B Dan Poalini fractured his wrist and will be placed on the 60-day DL. In his place the Mariners have called up #6 m's prospect OF Austin Williams from A High Desert. So far, he's hitting .255 with a home run and 4 RBIs in 13 games (55 ABs) hitting out of the #5 spot. when Poalini gets back, we won't be sending Wilson back down unless he goes into a huge slump.

                      Around The League:
Cubs currently have a 1-4 in the batting order of
                      CF Arismendy Alcantra
                      3B Javier Baez
                      SS Starlin Castro
                      1B Anthony Rizzo

They also have 3Bs Mike Olt, Kris Bryant, and now OF Jorge Soler and SS/2B Addison Russel in AAA, waiting to make the jump. The question is, who, if anyone, gets traded this year? Who makes the team in 2015?

Quintero, Denorfia, and Hart all could be on their way out. With replacements waiting in Jesus Sucre, Justin Smoak and Endy Chavez, they'll take any chance they can get.

                      Pitching:
                      Felix: 7-1, 2.77 ERA, 99 Ks, 15 BB

                      Elias: 2-6, 4.27 ERA, 66 Ks, 26 BB
                      Young: 4-6, 6.75 ERA, 38 Ks, 19 BB

                      Furbush: 2-2, 4.18 ERA, 30/4
                      Medina: 0-2, 4.30 ERA, 26/15, 0/1 SV/SVO
                      Wilhelmsen: 1-0, 2.37 ERA, 24/11
                      Farquhar: 0-0, 3.60 ERA, 21/6
                      Rodney: 0-1, 1.50 ERA, 20/2, 15 SV/17 SVO

The bullpen could use some more consistency, or else someone like Beimel could be DFA'd along with a send down or Elias and DFA of Chris Young.

The mariners are a game out of 1st in the west and currently hold the second wild card.

After ZERO trades in April and May, trades finally took place in June. There were two in total.

One was the Athletics trading SS/2B Nick Punto, and 1B Matt Olson (AA) B POT (84) for 2B Neil Walker of the Pirates.

Walker was hitting .257 with 11 HR and 33 RBI. He fits nicely in their lineup due to their need at 2B with Callaspo/Sogard struggling. Punto serves as depth and Matt Olson could possibly be the future 1B in Pittsburgh.

The other trade That occurred in June was the Rays picking up an elite Leadoff hitter, as Desmond Jennings was hitting .214 and was placed on the bench.

They traded 21 year-old SP (low B) Blake Snell (AA) to Kansas City for OF Jarrod Dyson. Dyson is hitting .323 with a high OBP and 16 stolen bases. He goes directly in the leadoff spot while Blake Snell reports to AA Montgomery.

In Mariners news, their #3 Prospect 1B DJ Peterson has been called up to AA Jackson. So far in AA he's hitting .300 with 2 HR and 10 RBI in 18 G. He joins other top prospects like Patrick Kivelhan, Austin Wilson, Julio Morban, Ketel Marte, Lars Huijer, and Tyler Pike

In pitching news, Andrew Carraway has been tearing up AA and has been given a promotion to AAA to start July. He's pitched to a 10-2 record with 77 SO and a 2.38 ERA. To accommodate, we sent down Jordan Pries (C pot) as he's been struggling in the AAA rotation.

Here are the Mariners MLB stats through three months into the season:

                        Lineup:
                        1. CF Austin Jackson:
                        .249, 8 HR, 33 RBI, 8 SB
He's gotten his AVG up, but I'd be willing to see less homers and more doubles and triples.

                        2. RF Michael Saunders:
                        .272, 9 HR, 28 RBI, 5 SB
He's been one of our best hitters. I'd like to see him steal more and possible be a 20/20 guy by the end of the season.

                        3. 2B Robinson Cano
                        .306, 15 HR, 47 RBI, 7 SB,
He's gotten his avg up every month this season. I'd like to see him improve it even more once August rolls around.

                        4. DH Kendrys Morales:
                        .209, 14 HR, 46 RBI
His average had climbed over .200, so I'll take the good power numbers.

                        5. 3B Kyle Seager:
                        .288, 17 HR, 46 RBI, 2 SB
He's been very consistent all season. Should make the all star team.

                        6. 1B Logan Morrison:
                        .231, 9 HR, 24 RBI
He's taken over the full-time 1B job, and has good power numbers.

                        7. C Mike Zunino:
                        .217, 11 HR, 26 RBI
He's currently our best option so the low AVG will have to do for now.

                        8. LF Dustin Ackley:
                        .270, 10 HR, 28 RBI, 1 SB
He's definitely improved, and has taken the full time job in LF, moving Denorfia to the bench.

                        9. SS Brad Miller
                        .282, 9 HR, 20 RBI, 8 SB
he's held down the SS/#9 hitter position all season. He does have 14 errors already, however.

                        Bench:
                        1B/DH Corry Hart:
                        .195, 2 HR, 11 RBI
After splitting time with Logan Morrison he's been relegated to the bench. A future DFA could be heading toward his way.

                        C Humberto Quintero
                        .187, 0 HR, 1 RBI
He's barely played, but he might earn himself a DFA as well in July.

                        UTL Willie Bloomquist:
                        .204, 0 HR, 5 RBI
He's been bad, but he's only made 23 starts all year. He'll be fine. He's the only guy who can play for Kyle Seager on the 25-man roster right now.

                        LF/RF Chris Denorfia:
                        .212, 3 HR, 8 RBI, 4 SB
Despite hitting better than his other bench mates, he's frustrated me the most because he's played way more than all of them. He's on a short leash.

                        Pitching:
                        Felix: 11-2, 2.65 ERA, 120/27 K/BB
                        Kuma: 7-4, 1.99, 94/23 K/BB
                        Pax: 10-3 2.47 ERA, 102/39 K/BB
                        Elias: 4-8, 3.74 ERA, 99/33 K/BB
                        Young: 5-9, 6.58 ERA, 59/26 K/BB

Felix, Kuma, and Paxton are all making cases for making the all star team. Elias, despite the record (which doesn't matter) has a okay ERA so I'm giving him more time in MLB. I'm giving Chris Young a SHORT leash. He's making one start in July and if he doesn't lower his ERA them he will be sent to DFA'd and will most likely spend the rest of the year in AAA, if he isn't released.

                        Maurer: 1.29 ERA, 48 K

                        Beimel: 3.76 ERA, 19 K, 1/1 SV/SVO
                        Furbush: 4.33 ERA, 38 SO
                        Wilhelmsen: 2.33 ERA, 34 SO
                        Medina: 4.45 ERA, 37 SO, 0/3

                        Farquhar: 3.19 ERA, 34 SO, 3/3
                        Rodney: 1.32 ERA, 32 SO, 23/26

Rodney, and Maurer are all star candidates, and honestly they both should make it.

Re: Seattle Mariners - rise to the top!

Finally at the All Star Break! It's been a long season. But it's also been fun as we currently lead the division by one game over the A's. Also, IRL, I'm ahead of these updates, so if they seem to be coming out fast, it's because I have them already written and everything.

                          Futures game update:

The Mariners were definitely represented in the Futures game. As on the World team, Gabriel Guerrero was the starting RF and batted 6th in the lineup. He went 1-2 with a RBI 2B in the 4th inning.

On team USA, DJ Peterson was the starting designated hitter and batted 7th. Also in team usa's bullpen was RHP Dominic Leone. Peterson went 1-2 with a single in the 2nd inning.

Leone pitched a scoreless 7th with 2 Ks.

                          Final score:
                          World: 4
                          USA: 2

They are definitely a part of the Mariner's "future" as well, with Leone probably making his debut sometime this September.

                          Next update: Home Run Derby!

                              All Star Game update:
Hey guys, I had a HUGE post with all the AS roster and everything, then my phone died and I lost it all.

So to make it short, here are the Mariners players that made it and they're role:

                              2B Robinson Cano - starting 2B, batting 3rd
                              3B Kyle Seager - bench
SP Felix Hernandez - Starting pitcher
SP Hisashi Iwakuma - Starter #5
                              CP Fernando Rodney - Bullpen

                              Guys who got snubbed:
RP Brandon Maurer: 1.14 ERA, 52 SO
SP James Paxton: 10-3, 2.73 ERA, 112 SO

The NL won 6-2. Rodney was the losing pitcher, lol.

Since this is a short post, I'll post about the AAA ASG as well.

Rainers players who made the team:
SS Chris Taylor - starting SS, batting 3rd
1B Jesus Montero - starting DH, batting 5th
                              2B Ty Kelly - starting 2B, batting 9th
SP Blake Beavan - Starting Pitcher (!!!)

                              Snubs:
                              C Jesus Sucre: .308 AVG 2 HR, 32 RBI
CF James Jones: .300 AVG, 0 HR, 31 RBI, 22 SB
RP Dominic Leone: 2.62 AVG, 75 SO

I will be skipping the July update, so the next post will be August, and include all the September call-ups!
