It differs based on your personnel. If you got the corners that can do it press man is the way to go.

If, like most teams, you don't have the personnel to do that your job just got a lot harder.

First many people may suggest cover 2. This is good and bad advice depending on what they are saying and what you are wanting. Cover 2 is designed to keep the play in front of the defense. Meaning you can complete drag route after drag route against it. But you are not getting any yards. give up the short pass and make the tackle, the proverbial bend but don't break defense.

The hope with the cover 2 is that one of those short passes is poorly executed be it a inaccurate pass, a dropped ball, or whatever. That would force the offense to challenge the defense.

To actually stop short passes from being completed, in my opinion your best bet is a fire zone blitz. Blitz a LB and have an exchange where a DL drops into the short hook area vacated by the LB. Since they start on the LOS and they are slower they do not drop back as far so they can defend the short pass. This works if your defender is attacking one part of the field, but if they spread it around it is not as effective. And you cannot do it consistently as it tires out your linemen and doing so would negate the biggest advantage it has which is the surprise factor.

Stopping the short passing game is extremely difficult. If you can't press you mostly have to hope the offense makes a mistake. You could try showing blitz though. The feint blitz could be enough to prevent the defender from dropping too far back.

I play cover three user the FS over the middle. then hit triangle and commit the other players on my team to underneath coverage which is down on the right stick.

In my experience the underneath adjustment seems to be subtle or result in minimal difference.

Usering the middle defender is often the best bet. If you try to call plays or adjustments to stop the short pass, just remember that is usually what the offense wants you to do.
