HUT = Pay to win so why do so many buy into it?
I guess I used the right word "buy". To me this is obvious pay to win, I find it hard to rationalize even playing HUT. I cannot be the only one who feels this way.*GROGtheNailer*Tags: None -

I play to open packs.... its fun, throws me back to being a kid again and opening cards. It's so much fun and with the free daily coins, you can get a pack a week just for that.Comment

It is not even close to pay to win.
Say what you want about this mode, but they give you AMPLE opportunity to earn coins in all EA UT modes.
You won;t be a great team right off the bat, and you do actually have to play to earn the coins, but it's possible.Comment

I do not want to be a Debbie-downer here but if you can pay to improve your place in a competitive component, that seems to be the exact definition of pay to win.
You take 2 equally skilled players, give one the ability to get items in a faster way with access to better weapons earlier (and easier) how can that not be pay to win?*GROGtheNailer*Comment

Re: HUT = Pay to win so why do so many buy into it?
To tomzennsbruh..... I've played all forms of ultimate team FUT, MUT, and HUT.....earning coins in madden and FIFA they did it right and Ample as you say, but I very much disagree with that statement for HUT, nhl is my favorite one but it's ridiculous how much time and how many games you need to log in order to earn enough coins to buy the high end packs, they really need to give us more for our time and it's readily apparent their direction is skewed towards Pay to win.Only the truest Buffalonians know what it is to stick with your hometown teams. Eventually we will be rewarded with a Super Bowl or Stanley Cup Championship. The ONE thing I want to see most before i leave this world. What a day that would be.Comment

Re: HUT = Pay to win so why do so many buy into it?
Pretty much what he said. I had friends that played HUT prior to NHL15 and I thought it was a stupid concept, why pay to open up digital packs of cards? The furthest I ever got into HUT prior to 15 was opening the starter packs. This is the first year I have put actual effort into playing HUT and I am loving every minute of it. I find opening packs hoping for a good pull to be dangerously addictive. Half the fun is setting up/tweaking your line up, auctioning off other cards and working out deals and trades with your friends.
Another reason I really love HUT is because it gives me the opportunity to try out players I normally never use. I am a Bruins fan and prior to 15 I would just play EASHL and GM Mode as the Bruins. HUT has really expanded my horizons and overall I feel it has really improved my NHL gaming skills (which still needs a lot of work!
) Yes my team is sort of stacked and I have spent money on it but people spend money on consumable items every day like cigarettes and alcohol, and since I've quit smoking and rarely ever drink this is my current addiction. Bottom line HUT is not bad as long as you do not go overboard with your spending.

Re: HUT = Pay to win so why do so many buy into it?
You have the choice:
-spend time, win pucks, build a team slowly
-spend money, build a team faster
I don't play a lot of different video games, and when I play NHL, it is mostly HUT. I play it a lot. I do not spend extra money besides the ultimate edition (which with the pre-order gives me 3 gold packs a week for a total of 36 cards including 7 rares).
It is my choice to do so, and I am not mad if I play a guy within my division (currently div 6) that lines up Crosby-Datsyuk-Ovechkin etc.... it is his choice.. If I beat him, well, I just beat a guy with a stacked team... if he beats me, well.... I have the excuse he had a stacked team!
Like Crixus said (warning Habs and Bruins fans agreeing here) for me most of the fun is open a pack, go see where the new players fit in my lineup, play with different players, etc...
It is more ''spend'' to win than ''pay'' to win... whether you decide do spend time or money or a combination of both is entirely up to you.OS Rookie since 2004!Comment

Actually they haven't been profitable at all since the early 90's.. WAY too over-produced and the market is too loaded to retain any value.. the only market in the 21st century was sending older cards to be graded and slabbed.. put into hard plastic holders and never handled ever again.View Through My Lens sports photography

"I find opening packs hoping for a good pull to be dangerously addictive."
That's where EA wants people to be. People are naturally competitive and EA is giving people that competitive advantage that also happens to line their pockets. It is a unfair practice and a breeding ground for EA to take advantage of gamers.
If you get down to the root of it, here is the philosophy:
"the one with more disposable income will be set up to succeed"
,People with low disposable income will clearly have a disadvantage, it is unfair to gamers, it is pure greed on EA's part and they count on a percentage of gamers to fall for this. The only way this could be legitimate is if players could not buy packs but have to earn them.
Pay to win is horrible game design. Yes you do not have to buy packs but from what I see, many do. How many of these people can afford it? EA already has 70 bucks of yours and is trying to squeeze out all they can by setting up this scheme.
This a scheme, I am surprised people try to slide this off the table. It goes against fairness and it irks me that people support it. I can point the finger at myself too if I am being honest, I support this by buying NHL 15, and though I have bought this years mode-less mess I have bought versions in the past.
I guess what I would offer is this, do not spend money on HUT, you are supporting an unfair practice and I hate seeing people suckered.*GROGtheNailer*Comment

Re: HUT = Pay to win so why do so many buy into it?
You may very well be right, but the idea of collecting cards and finding rare collectibles will probably never get old/unprofitable. It is just a matter of time until this type of industry has an upswing. I am glad that I found a new way to collect cards especially that I am able to use those cards to build a fantasy team. I don't get angry about this business model.Actually they haven't been profitable at all since the early 90's.. Re: HUT = Pay to win so why do so many buy into it?
Well first off EA has been taking advantage of gamers for years now, they pretty much have a monopoly when it comes to NFL and NHL games, they produce them and people buy them because there are no other game in the market. Both Madden and NHL were a huge improvement this year compared to the last few years when I felt the games were pretty much a roster update with maybe one or two added gimmicks. I bought the EA Pass and when I downloaded Madden 25 for the Xbox One I felt so relieved that I didn't actually spend 60 bucks on that game since I felt like it was a copy/paste of the 360 version, so yes EA does take advantage of gamers I will not argue that." That's where EA wants people to be. People are naturally competitive and EA is giving people that competitive advantage that also happens to line their pockets. It is a unfair practice and a breeding ground for EA to take advantage of gamers.

Yes having a stacked team does bring an advantage to the game however skill is still required. There are some great players out there who can easily beat a stacked team with a moderate lineup if their opponents lack the proper skills and mind you it is quite a humbling experience at times.
As far as people with a low disposable income, you do realize that you do not need to spend $200-300 to have a decent team right? $20 will get you roughly 5 jumbo packs, throw in a pack or two that you get from the in game coins you earn and you'll have a roster filled with gold players. You might not have Bergeron, Datsyuk, Subban, Toews, Malkin or Crosby in your line up, but you will still have a competitive team. I have really enjoyed playing HUT this year, and I would play FUT when FIFA15 comes out but I really do not follow soccer as much and hardly know any of the star players so it just wouldn't be as fun as HUT for me.
Bottom line, HUT is out there and a lot of people enjoy it, whoever came up with the concept of Ultimate Team probably got a pay raise. It is not for everyone though, and technically EA is not forcing you to play HUT because you can still play Play Now, Play Online, GM, OTP (hopefully soon) and EASHL (for the 360). And yes you have every right to hate me since I purchased both the Xbox one version of the game and the 360 version solely for EASHL.Comment
