With slider tweaks, I am absolutely loving the actual hockey, however the rest of the game is an absolute mess.
Graphics: 7/10 - Nowhere near as good as they could have been, given the fact that they essentially had 2 years to develop the game. They aren't too much better than the last one I played on PS3 which I believe was 12. The ice looks fantastic however.
Sound: 7/10 - The commentary is okay but nothing inspiring. The music, both in the stadiums and the presentation is very good, but I expected more of a new commentary team.
Presentation: In-game 9/10, menus 5/10. The NBC broadcast package is fantastic, and it really adds to proceedings. Could do with a few more stay overlays during the game though.
The area which really irks me is the way the menus work. They are unresponsive and convoluted. There's something about the font which makes in slightly strange to read. That could just be me but I don't find the game easy to navigate at all.
Gameplay:8.5/10 - The actual hockey is really good. You have to make a lot of adjustments to get a great game on the ice, however I love the fact that EA allow us to adjust pretty much every aspect of gameplay.
Overall: 7.5/10
I don't know a thing about games development, however some things in here smack of laziness. Such as not giving a goalie the right coloured equipment when they get traded. If you aren't going to include an edit mode then at least find a way round an annoying problem like that.
The hockey on the ice rescues this game, but unfortunately, other problems, some little and some bigger, make it impossible to recommend it.
I'm going to go back to the PS3 for this one I think, because for as good as the hockey is, it's not THAT much better to justify this over the last-gen version which is fully fleshed-out.
Once again, a next - gen game fails to deliver on the promises of its team.
