The real issue I see is that the only reason Madden is on top is exclusivity and a huge marketing budget.

Take that away from them and I have no idea how'd they'd be able to compete. Football is supposed to be their bread and butter, their masterpiece, but it never captures the sport. There are numerous features of the game that remain broken year after year. Worst case scenario, they take time and resources away from football, put out a product that fails after pouring money into it and then scale back everywhere else to cover the losses forcing them to basically release the exact same game next year for Madden 16 which is basically just a roster update.
