Team Overview
The Forward Lineup- The Vancouver Canucks have plenty of talent up front. With the recent signing of Radim Vrbata in free agency in the offseason, expect the Sedins to be putting up lots of points and getting lots of powerplay time. The Canucks also traded away long-time C Ryan Kesler to the Anaheim Ducks for C Nick Bonino, D Luca Sbisa and the 24th overall pick (Jared McCann). The team has plenty of secondary scoring from wingers Chris Higgins, Alexandre Burrows, Zack Kassian and Linden Vey. The team also has a solid bottom six and will expect to see rookie C Bo Horvat slot in on the third/fourth line to play against some NHL competition.
The Defensive Pairings- Vancouver's defense is always its number one concern. Even with a great top 4 the Canucks defence always seems to get injured someway or another. Led by veterans Dan Hamhuis, Kevin Bieksa and Alex Edler this core group of Vancouver leaders will see them carry a group consisting of Luca Sbisa, Chris Tanev, Ryan Stanton and Yannick Weber. Tanev, already being a great shutdown defenceman will see plenty of penalty kill time along with Dan Hamhuis. Also in the minors we have Frank Corrado pushing for a spot so there could be some position battles.
The Goaltending Situation- Ah, yes. The "Goalie Graveyard". Welcome to Vancouver Mr. Ryan Miller. Miller, a 34 year old goaltender from East Lansing, Michigan was signed to a 3 year deal that will pay him $6 million a year. Backing up Miller will be young Swedish goaltender Eddie Lack. Lack, coming off an impressive rookie NHL season will see roughly 25-30 games this season as we want Ryan Miller to have lots of rest for the playoffs.
Season Outlook: Willie Dejardins comes in to a fresh Vancouver team ready with a clean slate. No more John Tortorella ruining this teams chemistry. If Vancouver's defence can stay healthy I can see this team going a long way in the playoffs. Vancouver will be a fun team to watch with the Sedins finally getting their first line winger. Keep an eye on C Linden Vey who was acquired over the summer from the LA Kings, his speed and great playmaking abilities might see him move up in the line-up from time to time.
