    Classic Teams - Capa

I had a few postings in other threads here but thought I would start a topic on its own.

I am working on a best teams roster. I only have some of the teams done so far but it is in the vault under the PSN name capa2000 and the file is called CAPACLASSICS. I am working on more teams but it is very slow going.

I am old school to the max. I am 58 years old and watched football in the 60's and 70's which will explain why many of the teams I am creating come from that era. Apologies on the fact that not many teams from the 1990's and 2000's...but I sort of like to relive my youth when playing/watching these teams!

    Completed so far:
    1972 Dolphins
    1994 49ers
    1968 Jets
    1976 Raiders
    1975 Steelers
    1977 Cowboys
    1986 Giants
    1966 Packers
    1998 Broncos
    1969 Chiefs
    1967 Rams
    1985 Bears
    1969 Vikings
    1982 Redskins
    1967 Colts
    1979 Oilers
    1964 Browns
    1980 Chargers
    1981 Bengals
    1991 Lions
    1991 Bills
    1979 Saints
    2007 Patriots
    1975 Cards
    2000 Ravens
    1980 Eagles
    1980 Falcons
    1979 Bucs
    1987 Seahawks

I did not do Panthers, Texans, or Jaguars.

If you DL the file and see any blatant errors let me know. You can post here. I had to make some concessions with some of the old teams as they did not have enough players to fit EA's requirements. So you may see a few players I made up to round out roster requirements. They will have the last name of Summers, Winters, Falls, Springs and will be rated very low so they should not get playing time. I also do not have them in the depth charts.

This is Amazing to see Cap, i will download these for sure. I'm having some really bad issues concerning the rating system in this game, if i had a chart as to how madden is set up with the abbreviations and player stats to match those abbreviations, i could get going alot smoother on my set. I tried a couple transfer style of madden 08 rosters, but im getting some very lower numbers for the players out come, for example. when i rated Roger Craig and after editing him they way the rating system was used for those sets, he ended up being a 68 ovr. So I'm glad we have no cap limit and can create full team rosters, but im just stumped as how to rate, if i do it off memory then it will prolly be over powered, and the way i wanted the ratings to be were that even though strong teams were strong, they still had the ability to have some upset games or close games etc. that's what im striving for. yall know i give yall major props for the work you've done in the past, if you guys can either pm or shed some serious info on how ratings really should be done, im def willing to listen!

We should try to start a database for replacement players for the Classic Rosters. That's a major setback to doing this. The time it takes to find a proper height/weight match severely cripples the roster creation process.
For an alltime legends team on xbox, search usertag haughtypine7723

        The file is called xboxassantesgreatestever.

        Teams finished:
Bears, bills, browns, KC, Dall, Miami, Philly, ATL, SF, NYG, Jags, GB, NE, OAK, Rams, Ravens, WASH, NO, PITT, broncos, Texans, panthers, vikings, colts

I have to admit...here is how I approached the editing/creation process. I used the same method asantsead did for Alltime15 and in fact used his roster file as a base with his permission since it had so many of the players already done.

However, you will not see exact height and weight...or college. I tried to match position, skin color, and general "look" and then I edited equipment and ratings for that player. I would never come close to finishing if I had to create all players from scratch. It is a concession I made with the roster set as I wanted to cut down on the overall process.

So, my set may not be for all people. In fact, it already got one dislike in the vault even though I have only done 4 teams! LOL. Oh well, you can't please everyone.

If anyone feels like assisting let me know. However, you should have a keen awareness of the classic teams at least from an appearance point of view, I can update ratings and even equipment. It's going to take a while but at some point they will all be done!

                    Re: Classic Teams - Capa

I downloaded you rosters, nice work. I have to say I only glanced over them and your off to a running start. Are you using pro reference site? Just curious.

Constructive critique, if you don't mind? Saw a few errant numbers on players, not many, and also was wondering how extensive your plan is on editing equipment. My guess is that you're trying to get the guys named and where they belong then polish equipment and ratings. Most 70s guys need long sleeves (not arm sleeves) and classic shoes imo for better effect. Same for helmet and facemasks. I do realize long sleeves do create a glitch with arm stripes for many jerseys, but I still play my classic steelers in their old block number unis because overall, still better than seeing a Jack Lambert wearing a small-numbered 58, for example. Some old helmet facemasks will NOT save unless that is the LAST item you edit on a player before saving.

What is your approach with ratings in terms of whole-team overview? I personally don't want players overpowered, and over powered teams that are unwarranted. Even HOFers had bad traits in some areas. This of course is subjective to the nth degree.

Hope you don't mind me spouting off, as I really do appreciate what you are trying to undertake. Would sure be nice to have an editor, eh? Keep up the good work!

                      Re: Classic Teams - Capa

Thanks for the feedback. No problem on any critiques.

I do use the pro football reference site for info. Do you remember what players had wrong numbers? I did have to fill in a few player slots with fictitious players in order to satisfy EA position requirements...especially for the older teams. But I rated those guys extremely low so hopefully they don't get on the field at all.

As far as sleeves go, I pretty much went with the Standard sleeve and it is one of those areas that I can tweak afterwards. To be honest, I have been doing this for so long and this must be the 10th or 12th time I have created these teams for various games and I get burned out pretty quickly now. I find myself resenting the fact that I (we) have to do this at all, when all they need to implement is a carry over feature year to year...so simple...just fields in a db really. But they won't. Not because they can't. But because they choose not to. So, in editing I find myself not as diligent as I used to be.

Ratings - yeah...this is a tough one. I try to rate the HOF and elite players pretty high in most areas. I do not do the 99 across the board thing if I can help it. I try to vary ratings in different areas because as you said, even Tony Dorsett was not good at everything. Sometimes I can't get the overall rating to budge for a player from 99 no matter what I seem to change without making that trait unrealistic for that player (especially true with FBs).

The truth is for the most part it is a guessing game for many of the ratings. I mean, who can quantify pass and run blocking footwork? Stuff like that...and even some of the basic ratings unless you have an intimate knowledge of the player themselves. Some are no brainers like Payton, Unitas, Namath, etc. But the lesser known players...well...we do our best.

I do not have a method or any science to it. I go mostly on what I remember or have seen of the players. I like to make the older teams because these are the ones I am most familiar with (1960's and 1970's). So I go from memory or film clips on many of those guys.

Truth be known? I am about 70% vested in this at this point. I used to be a maniac back in the 2K5 days...but am older now and lose patience a lot more easily! LOL.

But I do appreciate stuff you find that think can be tweaked to make the set better!

I know the Cowboys backwards and forwards so I will look at them again. I know Danny White you had at #10, and he's #11. Yeah, I'm burned out also, and want to get to a point where I can play some regular games with 4-5 classic teams instead of editing all the time. It's a time killer, but labor of fun.

Yeah...I created 2 Whites since EA will not let you give a player 2 positions. The punter White has #10 and the QB White has #11.
