Re: 2014-15 Hot Stove League Thread
Word on Lester's deal is it includes a vesting option for $15MM and a 7th year. That would bring Chicago's total commitment to 7 years and $170MM, so it's still the biggest offer for Lester (even if the Giants offered 7/168) unless the vesting option is really unlikely to achieve.Chicago Cubs | Chicago Bulls | Green Bay Packers | Michigan WolverinesComment

SF is the last organization to panic. They probably wont even look at Scherzer. Probably go for Shields or Santana. Heard they are in talks for Dillon Gee tho alsoComment

Re: 2014-15 Hot Stove League Thread
In principle, I could see a deal like that happening. E-Jax is owed $26MM over the next 2 years and BJ is owed $46.4MM over the next 3 years. I don't think 1 year of Justin Upton is worth the excess $20MM we'd be taking on unless we were definitely going to lock him up and if we thought BJ had something left in the tank that's untapped in Atlanta. In other words, there'd have to be something else the Braves bring to the table to make this work. I wonder if Atlanta would be interested in Welington Castillo if they are trying Gattis all around the diamond or trading him.
The other issue with that is Upton in LF closes a spot on the diamond for Bryant/Schwarber to migrate to. That makes the idea seem a bit odd.
I doubt they'd want to block Christian Bethancourt with Welly, but who knows. If we do sign Ross (chances looking pretty good now) what do you think we can get back for Castillo? I was really hoping that he'd get another shot to turn things back around, but I doubt we carry three catchers.
When I was looking at the contracts, for some reason I thought we had 3 more years of Edwin. You're right, eating $20M looks a lot worse than $12M. What are we even going to do with him this year? Bullpen looks like it's going to be packed and there's definitely no place for him in the rotation..
Plus, I think Bryant could be manageable enough at 3B to justify keeping him there if Upton was in LF. Schwarber is another story, I really believe that our guys think he can stick at catcher, and are going to give him every opportunity to do so. That bat would be a huge asset behind the plate, even with decent defense.

Joe Maddon seems pretty excited about the Lester deal. This is probably something new to him because the Rays could never go out and get a top market pitcher.
On another note, I heard Rosenthal say that Hamels may want to stay in the NL like a lot of pitchers do, if traded or whatever. My question is why do pitchers like the NL more? My guess is because they can pitch against a pitcher and not a DH but I'm not sure.Comment

The only logical NL destinations for Hamels would be the Dodgers and the Cubs. I highly doubt the Cubs are interested now since they signed Lester. Don't really think any other NL teams have the prospects to make a Hamels deal worth it for the Phillies.Joe Maddon seems pretty excited about the Lester deal.
