Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

      Where there's smoke...

DeLorenzo's game of the year trumps Stanback's 272 rush yards, UConn bowl eligible

Maxy had the game of a lifetime.

      WHOO!!!

We're bowl eligible for the second straight year, and we need to thank only one man for getting us there.

      Maxy.

The senior, who has heated up considerably in the last 3-4 games, had a career day, gaining 185 yards on 28 carries, in addition to a TD, 3 catches and 42 receiving yards.

Sound impressive? Heh. Wait till we get into this game recap.

For most of the distance, the game was a "whatever you can do, I can do better" sort of thing, as the score up until Bobby Puyol kicked an extra point length field goal to go up 24-21 at the intermission.

The big story of the first half was the battle between the two tailbacks, Maxy and William Stanback. Stanback, a big powerful back, found that UConn could not tackle him, and ended up getting a 37 yard TD run, as well as a 30 yard run on the first drive. However, he inexplicably only got 4 carries in the first half, despite racking up over 70 yards.

DeLorenzo, meanwhile, got the majority of the workload in the Husky O as Bryant Shirreffs and the pass game were being shut down by the strong UCF secondary. His highlight of the first half was a stretch play on a first down, which he spun around and juked out a guy, then took it 54 yards to the house, the longest run of his career to date.

The game heated up after the half, UCF got the ball to start the 3rd. Stanback and Justin Holman combined for 3 runs of 10 yards or more, and were driving when Holman went to scramble again.

      Justin Holman in action.

Holman was hit, but by Graham Stewart, the best of many UConn defenders. The sure handed Stewart jarred the ball loose at the 25, and Jhavon Williams scooped it up from his corner spot.

DeLorenzo and Shirreffs went back and forth with carries, Maxy for 5, 14 and 1, Shirreffs for 12 and 13, the latter of which he escaped 2 sacks and 6 defenders from in the pocket and was able to run free from the bewildered UCF D-line.

Dhameer Bradley followed with a 16 yard catch, Shirreffs for another 10 yard run.

However, Alec Bloom was stuffed a yard short on a 3rd down play action from the goal line, and UConn had to settle for another extra point field goal.

Unfortunately, this left the window wide open for Stanback, who, as he was heating up, happened to plow through Williams and about 4 others, on his way to a 72 yard run that brought him down to the 3. The Knights scored a play later.

Into the 4th quarter at this point, UConn felt necessary to take evasive action.

Shirreffs' 24 yard scramble set up a long, clock eating drive. DeLorenzo's 21 yard wheel route catch got UConn inside the 15. Josh Marriner got to the 2 on 3 straight runs, and Ron Johnson, on his first career carry, pounded the rock in the end zone to go up 33-28 (conversion was no good).

Again, to which William Stanback pointed a major F U to UConn, breaking 4 tackles en route to a 75 yard TD scamper, and a successful conversion. Just one play later, UCF had a 36-33 lead. Wow.

With Arkeel Newsome out of the game with an injury, DeLorenzo (who else) got the return, brought it out to the UConn 39, then proceeded to get carries of 9 and 8. Marriner went for 3 and 6, Maxy got 10 more on 2 more carries.

Unfortunately, the drive stalled out and Puyol needed to get a 41 yard field goal to keep UConn's chances alive with a hair under 3 minutes remaining. His kick was clean, and just crossed over the crossbar and good. Tie ballgame.

UConn got a massive break on the Knights' next drive, as Stanback went down hurt after 2 straight carries (likely from all the broken tackles) and broke his collarbone, meaning his season would come to an end in a heap, in a tie game no less, on his own turf.

But regardless, the game went on, and UCF's drive floundered. Maybe a broken Stanback was better than no Stanback...

Anyway, UConn hit DeLorenzo for a 13 yard catch, then broke the drive open with an amazing 53 yard pass play to Thomas Lucas, who outjumped Shaquem Griffin and outran two linebackers for about 45 yards before getting inside the 15. DeLorenzo and Marriner cleaned up, with the latter running in the winning score with 2 seconds on the clock.

However, the extra point was blocked, so the game would be far from over with only a 6 point lead.

UCF fell on the ball quickly, leaving a second for Holman to try to get a hail mary up.

Holman would be drilled on the attempt by Kenton Adeyemi and the ball's distance was decreased. It would be caught, but only for about a 9 yard gain, and the game would end.

With that, friends we have discarded our poor start and are qualified for a bowl game. However, we learned all to well from last year that we may need a 7th to actually be guaranteed a slot.

But by the way Maxy played today, that shouldn't be an issue.

      See you in Tampa.

I like Marriner and Newsome more than Ron Johnson. Newsome is faster, Marriner is more dynamic. You do still have them, right?

I do still have them. I just like Johnson more, as he is the closest to DeLorenzo. I'm so used to using Max, I think I want someone similar in his place when he leaves.

For some reason, I don't think Marriner is an every down back. Frankly, I see him more like Shane Vereen, except a bit better runner and not as good pass catcher. Newsome I think will get beat up bad because of his size, though he and Jeff McNeal should see carries next year.

But we're still far away from making this decision, so we'll see.

Running with the Bulls..not quite fast enough

Tice returns USF from jaws of defeat, stay alive in AAC East

                Darius Tice.

I came to a realization playing this game. Maxy IS our offense. When he's on, we go. When he isn't, we don't. Fairly simple...

                This was very evident today.

After his career day last week, the obvious method of offense was to feed the hot hand. That we did. Or at least tried to.

Because it didn't work. USF's defense, which has been unspectacular this year, was very stout. Maxy didn't have a ton of running lanes, and as a result the Huskies had to rely on the ever-freezing arm of Bryant Shirreffs.

While UConn got past midfield on their first drive, a few drops forced a punt.

Which was a shame, as USF came out firing. I mean firing.

Mike White, who we thought would, well, game manage as he usually has this year (Marlon Mack has already topped 1000 yards entering action, it took him only 10 games).

White, not even thinking about his superb backfield mate, launched 3 straight completions to tight end Sean Price for completions of 12, 16 and 11 (Where the hell is my defense?) and finally Alex Mut (awesome name) for a 40 yard TD catch. We had 2 players whiff badly trying to make tackles. I am so sorry for our defensive coordinator.

Maxy was able to get a few holes on the next drive, and get a few gains. Shirreffs got a few timely conversions, (including a 4th and 2 to Kamal Abrams for a 27 yard gain). Max was able to rumble in a 1 yard score toward the end of the first to tie it up.

While USF punted on their next drive, Shirreffs was plotting his path to victory on the sidelines.

With a 40 yard scramble immediately followed by another 20 yard run, UConn was in the red zone. Maxy's 11 yard run (his longest on the day) set up UConn at the 8, and proceeded to not get a touchdown.

After the Bobby Puyol field goal, Marlon Mack made quick work of the UConn front 7.

A run of 21 set the BUlls up at midfield, and another 31 yard dash set them up for a scoring chance.

Price had a 15 yard catch, but USF didn't gain a yard on the next 3 plays, and had to kick a field goal of their own.

USF ended up with the ball off a punt right before the half, and Ryeshene Bronson got the ball rolling with a 15 yard catch. After a false start and a Mut drop, USF had a 3rd and 11 looming. Price again somehow broke free of the much faster Jefferson Ashiru and ended up with a 34 yard catch.

Bronson took a jet sweep the remaining distance for a TD. USF up 17-10 at the half.

After another big play from Bronson, USF kicked a second field goal and went up by 10 right after the break.

Shirreffs, realizing he needed a score here, ran for 12 (up to 107 yards on the ground on just 7 carries), hit Sean McQuillan for 21, Noel Thomas for 30 more and were within 3 yards from paydirt. Maxy obliged and brought us within 3.

Maxy had a pair of scores, but was overall held in check by the Bulls front 7.

USF simply returned the favor, converting a few third downs, and nailing us with another shot of Price. (Apparently it was right today).

Mack busted another 20 run, and USF was within 3 yards of their own touchdown.

Thankfully, Graham Stewart blasted Mack at the one yard line and made USF settle for another field goal.

McQuillan took full advantage of USF blitzing on a 3rd and long conversion and scooted into the end zone, giving the Huskies their first lead of the day, 24-23.

To which Darius Tice tore away, spit out and did a Mexican Hat Dance on.

He took the ensuing kick 98 yards to the house, and converted the 2 point try himself.

Talk about being there for the team. USF up 31-24

The following return was brought out to the UConn 44, and Shirreffs pulled his troops inside the 4 yard line after lofting a desperation heave to Thomas Lucas and somehow making the catch to convert a 3rd and long.

However, trying to catch the defense off guard, his play action bootleg was picked off in the end zone. Rahmon Swain, if you were curious. Yeah, I figured.

                Ballgame.

Oh why, why can we never win against average opponents? It's so strange.

Why, just why did we lose 4 games in conference to destroy our chance at winning the division? (We are eliminated, UCF plays USF next week, winner of that game or Temple if they will likely take the East.) Eh.

At least we still have a bowl game. See you at senior day.

Sean McQuillan had a good day.

Damn. Thought you guys really had a shot at taking the AAC East crown. It'd be strange if Temple won it at 6-6. They're doing terrible in my dynasty. At least you're still in line for a bowl berth. Probably the Beef 'O Brady's bowl, haha.

Also, I can't believe Tulane is 0-10. What the heck?!?

Also, I can't believe Tulane is 0-10. What the heck?!?
TBH, we should have. I have no clue why we have not been able to beat these average teams this season, makes no sense.

If Temple wants to play in a bowl or for the AAC title, they have to get through us next week. With The Rent rocking on senior day, it'll be a tough task. But who knows.

As for Tulane, wait till next year. Haha.

Looks like BG can crack the Top 25 with a win this week! Hopefully we're playing Toledo or Ohio.

UConn Seniors -- We Say Thanks

RB Max DeLorenzo: Star running back has erupted onto the scene in the second half, with multiple games of 100+ yards. With a 100 yard game today, he will cross 1000 yards on the season.

WR Kamal Abrams: 5th year senior assumed a greater leadership role headed into camp and with that a starting gig. Though the numbers haven't been fantastic, he has had a great season and has mentored the younger players a lot.

TE Sean McQuillan: 2 year starter was a jack of all trades through his career, doing everything from catching passes to blocking, with roles changing any given week. Great talent, will be missed.

OT Dalton Gifford: Started games in each of last 3 seasons, great blocker. Opened a lot of holes for Max DeLorenzo, and his experience will be missed on the line.

OG Tyler Samra: Appeared in games each of his 4 seasons. Never spectacular, but always got the job done.

DE Kenton Adeyemi: Preseason All-American, emerged as the star of the defensive line in an unconventional way last year, being handed the job after Angelo Pruitt retired prior to 2014 season. Slowed a bit in 2015, but will be missed going forward.

DT Julian Campenni: First year starter really emerged this year, making some big plays in Coach Diaco's 3-4. Always works hard in game.

LB Jefferson Ashiru: Pre-season All-American, had a great year in 2014 but numbers dipped a bit. Regardless, a rock on the front 7 and was always willing to do anything on D.

LB Graham Stewart: Bednarik contender was all over the place in his 2 years in Storrs after transferring from Florida. You name it, he did it. Tackles, hard hits, sacks on 3rd and inches, forced fumbles, the list goes on. One of UConn's most decorated defenders in the past 30 years.

LB Marquise Vann: Flew under the radar his entire career because of guys like Lawrence Wilson, Stewart and Ashiru, but very consistent. He always did everything right in game. Great in coverage and sure handed tackler.

S Andrew Adams: Lettered in 4 years of play at UConn, shut down safety in the secondary. INT numbers have gone down, but that doesn't diminish his impact any less.

The University of Connecticut, its staff, faculty, alumni and fans than our seniors for their dedicated years of service to the team.

I can't remember who they are playing, but I think they won. Kiffin has done a phenomenal job this year, he'll be going back big time this offseason, for sure.

If anything, I based this off jbrew's Senior Day analysis in his 'chise last week, so thanks to him for the inspiration.

Ours look a little different, at least from season 2. Sorry 'bout that.

                                Going out in style

Defense dominates as Huskies shut out Owls on Senior Day

Maxy appears to get a ride from a Temple defender. Hey, whatever helps.

What a festive atmosphere. What a great defensive game. What an easy box score to fill out...

Regardless, Senior Day 2015 is exactly the type of game former defensive coordinator Bob Diaco wanted to see when he accepted the job in 2014.

Fact of the matter is, the seniors on this team had some great days in ensuring Temple would be denied in their quest to win their 6th game and the AAC East.

Start with Maxy. He had a career high 32 carries, and as a result 151 yards and a pair of scores. His 14 points outscored Temple, and he had clear lanes to run all day. With his day, he crossed 1000 yards on the season, and can pad his stats more in the bowl game. He has the potential to land in the season, or even career, record books.

Move to Jefferson Ashiru. The senior has been very quiet in 2015, but had a huge sack on P.J. Walker on the Owls' first drive, and it really sucked the wind out of their sails. Marquise Vann nailed Walker on Temple's second drive after a UConn field goal, and Obi Melifonwu made the INT. Though not a senior, it was nice to see him record (I believe) his first INT in this dynasty.

After DeLorenzo's first TD, Temple did another quick 3 and out. Cam Stapleton, who has had a breakout year with double digit sack numbers, got to Walker on first down, and Jhavon Williams ended the drive with a 3rd down INT.

DeLorenzo's second TD put UConn into cruise control, 17-0. But the defense continued to smother Walker. Walker did have a pair of 12 yard rushes, and got within the 35, but a long distance field goal was missed after Stapleton recorded a TFL to push them back.

After the half, UConn looked prime to put the game out of reach, as Bryant Shirreffs had the Huskies driving. DeLorenzo's 30 yard run set up UConn inside the 5. Unfortunately, he couldn't get it in, so Shirreffs had to go PA bootleg. And right there was Shahid Lovett, to make a miraculous diving INT.

But again, UConn was there to cause destruction. Enter Graham Stewart. The senior Butkus Award finalist always shows up at the right time. Did he ever.

Jamie Gilmore had a 1 yard run, and Khalif Herbin's 9 yard catch set up 3rd and short. Which Stewart said screw that and plowed through the line of scrimmage faster than Joey Chestnut can eat a hot dog. Stewart sacked Walker and ended a promising Temple drive. Wouldn't be the last time either.

UConn had a drive cut short by a Hershey Walton sack, and Temple still had a chance. Stapleton stopped Walker behind the line, but (sound alarm) enter another senior. This time it was safety Andrew Adams, who stepped up, picked off a long heave and brought it back to the Temple 32.

Into the 4th, Shirreffs hit Thomas Lucas to cap off the short drive with a score.

Thom Lucas is almost looking at the camera. Don't know why he's shy, but we'll get him next year, for sure.

Herbin started off Temple's next drive with a 13 yard catch, but (sound alarm again) senior end Kenton Adeyemi drilled Walker and forced yet another punt.

Temple, now late in the 4th, needed a score on their next drive to stay alive. Their defense was doing their part, they just needed something. Anything.

They didn't get it. Romond DeLoatch made a nice grab to advance 17 yards, but on the very next play Walker was caught scrambling by Stewart, who destroyed the junior QB and sent the ball flying. Vann recovered and spiraled Temple's chances. UConn turned over the ball their next drive, but still looked in good shape.

With one final chance, Temple converted a third down (first in 10 tries, took them nearly all game) and got to midfield when Walker loaded up long. Unfortunately, the throw was pathetic and went straight to Junior Joseph, who picked it off with ease and put the game on ice.

Truly the best performance of the year (save the best for last right?). Yes, Temple's offense was bad, but man was it refreshing to see the D play so perfect.

And it feels great to see the seniors step up on senior day. We're honored to see them get a win in their last game at The Rent, and hit a bowl game along the way.

Here's hoping we'll get something good. See you in 2016, Rent.

                                Seniors, god bless.

Junior Joseph recorded an INT (His first in dynasty, I think.)

Man, tight ends have destroyed me at times this year.

Remember back to the Missouri game, Sean Culkin had I think 8 catches for over 100 yards. At least that guy was impossible to tackle, we were just generally letting Price get open, I hate that happening. We had a similar problem with Mike Meade on Temple today, he got open, but he just couldn't hang on to the ball.

                                --------------------------------

Note from the author: I am back in school tomorrow, thus my binge posting is complete for now.

I am really impressed to see myself finish off 2015 in a week essentially (my first post over break was the Navy game last Friday, Week 4 and now I'm right at the bowl game in dynasty. Need to catch up on here).

Anyway, I'm expecting to get slammed with work this week, so if anyone is behind, this week is a great chance to catch up on season 2, as I don't anticipate getting a lot up this week, and I know I won't be playing that bowl game until Friday night, at the earliest.

Again, thanks for following. I'm having a ton of fun doing this, I can't wait for season 3.

                                --------------------

                                Second note from the author:

I am going to be replacing a few of the generic coaches popping up this offseason with coaches from other past/current successful dynasties. Two will be Kaelyn Willingham (kswgrad2012, Tulane if he wishes) and Sam Freday of Bowling Green/NFL's Browns (Po1soNNN), as they are both followers, and it will be interesting to see their careers shape up in a different world.

whughes, if you see this and want a coach created from a dynasty of yours or something, notify me before we start season 3. Same applies for anyone else who may be following this. I'll gladly get your coach in as soon as I can in dynasty. No CAPS, but a close second, much more innovative I think.
