Re: Fear The Deer -- Milwaukee Bucks Dynasty

After putting together a franchise-worst record in 2013-14, it's cliche to say that things can only get better for the Milwaukee Bucks when 2014-15 tips off.

But, despite the 15-67 record the team turned in a season ago, that's exactly the mentality needed to turn things around. And with an abundance of young talent, it's not unreasonable to think brighter days are right around the corner.

2013-14 season in 140 characters or less:

            Is it over yet?

Did the summer help at all?

Outside of the Kidd fiasco, Milwaukee’s new owners managed to avoid the usual big-splash panic moves that generally follow the sale of an NBA team, holding onto their pricier tradable contracts, avoiding another Mayo-like signing and adding a first-round pick from the Clippers, all while drafting Parker, watching the Greek Freak do Greek Freakish things on an international stage, getting Mayo and Knight to work out together in Miami and letting Sanders recover from thumb and orbital socket injuries. And even Kidd isn’t such a bad addition. Opponents won’t exactly fear the dear, but yeah, the Bucks are a little bit better, now and later, so long as they mind their assets and don’t settle for the middle.

            Glaring weakness:

Along with pushing two 19-year-olds as the faces of your franchise comes a leadership void. Both Knight and Sanders professed their prowess in that regard at media day, but they boast the same combined number of career playoff victories as Laverne & Shirley. While the additions of Dudley and Bayless — a pair of stable locker room presences off the bench — should help the Bucks avoid a complete repeat implosion, this remains a young roster devoid of a commanding NBA voice, and that includes Kidd.

            Contributor with something to prove:

Sandwiching an alleged bar fight and a sneakily served marijuana suspension around an injury-plagued dud of a first season after signing a four-year, $44 million extension, Sanders begins 2014-15 with a fresh slate. If the 6-foot-11 Sanders can return to the form that warranted enough votes to finish third on the NBA’s Most Improved Player ballot and seventh in the Defensive Player of the Year race in 2013, he’ll reestablish himself as either a building block for the Bucks or some awful big trade bait (cue Cavaliers chatter) — both of which would be welcome news for the future of both Milwaukee and Sanders.

            Potential breakout stud:

As much as I’d like to argue Knight is primed for a breakout season, few players have warranted hysterical hype this summer quite like Antetokounmpo and his raw athleticism. Still growing at 6-foot-10, capable of covering three quarters of the court in two dribbles and floating buzzer-beating 3-pointers like it ain’t no thing — not to mention he’s plying his point guard skills under one Gary Payton — he’s indeed the freakiest of Greeks. Now, if he can just produce numbers better than his 51.8 true shooting and 1.2 assist-to-turnover ratio as a rookie, then he could really be something.

            Best-case scenario:

It would require Greek Freak-like leaps from Knight, Parker and Antetokounmpo as well as a return to form from Sanders, Mayo and Ilyasova — and the health of all involved — but there's at least the possibility the Bucks can rise to the middle this year, particularly in a top-loaded Eastern Conference.

            If everything falls apart:

If Sanders finds trouble at another Milwaukee brewpub, if Mayo puts down a few too many bratwursts, if Giannis remains as raw as his arms are long, if Knight still can't quite find his NBA way and if Parker doesn't fulfill his considerable promise as a rookie — all ifs that aren’t out of the realm of possibility, either — then the Bucks will find themselves right back where they started the season, at the bottom looking up, but with another high lottery pick waiting in the wings. And that's not such a bad thing.

            Record Prediction:

Milwaukee will finish at 24-58, last in the Central Division.

Bucks start strong in season opener

Charlotte, NC -- The Milwaukee Bucks faced off against the Charlotte Hornets to kick off the 2014-15 NBA season tonight in the Hornet's Time Warner Cable Arena. In a packed house, Kemba Walker and Al Jefferson looked ready for battle.

The Bobcats started the game off with a deep 3 from Lance Stephenson, who played a decent game scoring 11, grabbing 9 boards and dishing out 4 assists. The downside to his play tonight was poor shooting (4-19). The 3-0 lead would be the Hornet's one and only lead in the game.

Milwaukee put together a nice run as the duo or Brandon Knight and OJ Mayo proved too much for the Hornets to handle in the first half. The Bucks largest lead of the game would be as high as 18.

We saw great team play out of the Bucks as they had six players in double figures. Parker and Sanders dominated the paint with 23 points and 25 rebounds between the two.

All-in-all, Milwaukee controlled this game from start to finish. It was refreshing for Bucks fans to witness great team basketball and fluidity in the offense.

The Bucks head home to take on Tony Wroten and the Philadelphia 76ers who started their season on a rough note with a 64-101 loss to the Pacers. Tune in Friday, October 31st to see the Bucks attempt to start the season 2-0.

Bucks down Sixers, drop to Wizards

Washington, DC -- Without Michael Carter-William, the 76ers (0-3) are at the bottom of the barrel. The Bucks were able to have their way with them, pulling off a big win, 124-99 to start the season 2-0. Because this game was quite the whooping, we've decided to skip right to the game that required some effort.

After an easy win against the 76ers, the Bucks traveled across the US to play the Wizards (1-1). The Bucks were tired from the night before's game, and the the long plane ride this morning didn't help their cause. Regardless, they played a tough game.

In the first half, Paul Pierce made it apparent it would be a long game. Knocking down his first six shots, he led the Wizards to a 12-2 start. Milwaukee would battle back to cut the deficit to five before the end of the first.

Strong play from Brandon Knight kept the Bucks close in the first half, but you could tell it was wearing him out to carry the team.

Heading into the second half, Milwaukee was down by 9, and poor shooting from the team allowed Wall and the Wizards to extend their lead to 17 before the fourth quarter started.

OJ Mayo and Jabari Parker shot under 30% each, and 15 turnovers by the Bucks doomed them to defeat. The Bucks did their best to put together a comeback, but Knight had no help on the offensive end, and the Wizards took full advantage of that.

Milwaukee falls to 2-1, and heads to Indiana to take on the 2-0 Pacers.

                    Milwaukee off to 3-1 start

Parker slams one of his 16pts down

Indianapolis, IN -- Without their fearless leader Paul George, the Pacers face a tough challenge this season. It was quite evident the team seemed lost without their star forward, as the Bucks dominated them from start to finish.

Milwaukee came out hot, hitting 4/5 of their first shots. The Pacers were able to muster up some offense to counteract the Bucks, leading 23-20 in the first quarter.

In the second, the Greek Freak [Antetokounmpo] took over and the Bucks never looked back. His use of the euro-step and a lack of a lock-down defender to put on him, made it seem as if the rim was twice as big for him. He would finish the game with 23 pts (9/11), 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

Again the Bucks played great team basketball, totaling 24 assists as a team. They also had five players in double figures, the second most this season. Parker and Sanders played well down low as both put up double doubles again.

Milwaukee is off to a great start, especially considering last season's effort. While they haven't played the toughest competition, it gives the fans a little hope for what is to come.

The Bucks head home to take on the Chicago Bulls (3-1). Derrick Rose is questionable, which would not be a bad thing for the Bucks. A 4-1 start would be a great way for the team to show everyone they're here to compete.

                          Milwaukee Off To Incredible Start
Milwaukee, WI -- If you asked anyone in their right mind if the Milwaukee Bucks would be off to a 9-1 start, they would most likely laugh in your face. But low and behold, that is the case.

Many are thinking "how?", "what?", or "how much did they pay the refs?". Trust me, I am just as shocked as you are. Their record is great, but they can't be given all the credit.

In the first nine games, they've played what appears to be a strong schedule, with the likes of Chicago, Miami, Memphis, and Oklahoma City. But, when you look at the roster situations, it becomes clearer. Chicago was without starting guard Derrick Rose due to a sore ankle. The Grizzlies were without center Mark Gasol. And the Thunder were without their two best players Westbrook and Durant.

Now, we're not saying the Bucks didn't earn these wins, but they had some help from the injury gods.

Let's look at the play of the Bucks players and see who has stepped up as a leader this season.

                          Brandon Knight
Knight has played a tremendous first 10 games. Averaging 20.5 pts, 6.4 assists, and only 2.2 turnovers per game, he is proving that he is more than just a scoring guard.

His leadership on the court has translated to the young guys and has inspired them to play their best basketball. If Knight can keep it up, I see the Bucks continuing this hot streak.

                          O.J. Mayo
Here's a name that has the stigma of disappointment attached to it. O.J. Mayo has never lived up to the hype he came into the league with... That is, until this season. Averaging 15.5 pts, 3.6 rebounds, and 3.0 assists, his numbers are way up from last season. He's shooting a remarkable 50% from the field, inkling 40% from three.

His $24 million contract has seemed a waste until now. Hopefully Mayo can continue to dig deep and hit big shots like he has thus far.

                          Jabari Parker
Leading all rookies in scoring, Parker is putting up a solid 12.9 points and 7.5 rebounds this season. We all know he had the potential to be great, but it is awesome to see him step it up so early in the season. Thrown right into the starting lineup, Parker has proved his worth and is making Jason Kidd's decision to start him seem like pure genius.

At this rate, if Parker can continue to play at a high level, we predict a Rookie Of The Year in his future.

                          What's to come?
Well, that is a tough question. It's hard to imagine this hot streak continuing for long. The Bucks have the Knicks, Nets, Raptors, and Wizards in their next four games. I predict a 2-2 finish after these four games, but if the team continues to fire on all cylinders like they are now, we could see some amazing things happen in the next few games.

                            Knicks end Bucks winning streak

Milwaukee, WI -- Right when the Bucks thought they were gonna take the momentum and run with it, Carmelo Anthony's 30 points put a stop to it. Melo had a great night, shooting 13-20 from the field while also grabbing 8 boards.

The Bucks were riding high on a 7 game winning streak. Knight was quoted saying, "Ya know, we were playing really well, but sometimes you have an off night. Tonight was that night".

Knight played well in the loss, scoring a team high 25 points and dishing out 6 assists.

The true downfall was a lack of production from Mayo and Parker. The two combined for 6-19 shooting, for a mere 16 points.

Meanwhile, the Knicks got great contributions from Hardaway and Shumpert, each scoring 16 points a piece.

The Knicks improve to 6-5, while the Bucks drop to 9-2.

The Bucks face the Nets tomorrow night, the game can be seen on ESPN2 with an 8:15 tip-off time.

                              Bucks drop second in-a-row

The Nets strong defense led to the victory

Brooklyn, NY -- If losing to the Knicks wasn't bad enough, the Milwaukee Bucks figured they'd add a loss to the Nets in their as well. It wasn't for lack of effort though, as they clawed back late to make it a close game.

The Nets came out hot, just as the Knicks did in the Bucks previous game. Getting out to an early 10 point lead, the Bucks had to play catch up all game.

Deron Williams and Jarret Jack played a great game at the point position, combining for 36pts and 15 assists.

The Bucks came out in the second half facing a 10 point deficit. On the back of Brandon Knight and The Greek Freak, they were able to slowly but surely make their way back into the game. Solid defense and team basketball were key to the comeback.

Knight would score 9 of his 17 pts in the fourth quarter, hitting all three of his 3pt attempts in a four minute span. The Bucks were able to pull out to a one point lead with 30 seconds left on the clock.

Deron Williams wouldn't have it though. With the score 95-94, he called for a screen from teammate Kevin Garnett, Knight went under, and Williams knocked down the three pointer to make it 97-95 with 15 second remaining. With the clock ticking down, Brandon Knight drove hard to the basket, but his last attempt at a layup rolled off the rim, giving the Nets the 97-95 win.

"We came out weak, but we rallied and I'm proud of that. We've just gotta make sure that we don't dig our own grave" said head coach Jason Kidd int he post-game interview.

Milwaukee heads up north to face the Toronto Raptors (8-3) this Friday, November 21st, in the first of three meetings this season.
