As a hitter how many pitches per inning do you usually see during a game? I know my discipline / patience isn't very good at all so I average 8-12 pitches per inning and almost never draw a walk.

Re: Pitches per Inning
If I can get 15-20 pitches per inning, I feel successful because I'm seeing pitches well, working counts, and working the pitcher by adding to his total pitches. However, I don't always feel this confident and have these results. Sometimes I get in a hurry and will see 6-8 pitches in an inning and have no positive results, just a wasted inning with no opportunities. -
Re: Pitches per Inning
8-12 is low like really low. When you are playing you want the pitcher to throw between like 15-20 on average. Think about this if you are only seeing 12 a inning in 7 innings that is only going to be 84 for a starter that is low enough he is going to be able to get like 7-8 innings like ever time. If you are facing a good pitcher even if you don't hit him much If you are able to work the count and face 20 pitches a inning that would be 100 after 5 or 120 after 6 meaning the pitcher is only going to get like 6 innings max and when facing great pitchers some times you just want to get them out of the game. Also the more pitches you see the better changes you are going to get better pitches to hit. Finally in an average baseball game a team is going to get like 3 walks and 9 hit and hit into 1 double play witch means like 38 at bats in the game. If you face 12 pitches a inning that would be 108 in 9 innings. 108 divide by 38 equal just under 3 pitches per battier. I believe the teams that average the most pitches per battier are like 3.25 and I think the highest are like 4.Comment

Re: Pitches per Inning
Sounds about right. I was also thinking like the best pitchers in baseball are going to average like 7 innings. If you are facing say 15 an inning in 7 innings that is going to be 105 innings and the best pitchers are going to average I would think like 100-110 pitches a start.Comment

Re: Pitches per Inning
My goal for every game, especially when facing the opposing team's ace, is to get the starter out of the game by the 6th inning so I can go to work against the weaker bullpen staff. Most of the time that means being very patient and working counts, fouling pitches off, etc. So that means seeing at the very least 18 pitches an inning, which I make a conscious effort to look for. If I do it correctly normally the starter will be at 100 pitches somewhere in the 7th inning which means he'll either start to make mistake pitches because he is running out of energy or they will bring in a reliever to replace him. Once that happens my strategy switches from being patient to being aggressive. Taking advantage of the weak part of the bullpen (before the setup man and closer come out) is my strategy for every game. All in all if i see 150+ pitches every game I feel like I had a successful night at the plate, because working counts and having long at bats usually results in runs scored. Maybe not early in the game, but come the 5th, 6th, 7th innings you will start to see the patience pay off. Hope this helps!BOSTON BRUINS

Re: Pitches per Inning
I'm not talking about the MLB average. How many pitches do YOU see per inning as a hitter. Of course everyone has the goal to get the opposing starting pitcher out by the 6th or 7th inning, but what actually happens to you? Like I said I have terrible patience and almost never work a walk. If I am seeing 12-15 pitches per inning I feel like I am doing g great compared to what I usually do, which is under 10 pitches. I can't be the only one who has terrible patience....
Personally, when I play against CPU, 15 pitches per inning is what I strive for. Against human, it depends on how he pitches me; in order not to hit in behind counts all the time, I have to hack if he keeps pounding strike zone.Comment

Re: Pitches per Inning
I try to see 4-7 pitches per plate appearance while playing franchise. I draw about two walks a game. And I have notices that the pitcher adapts to me taking pitches, and will start grooving a four seamer do the first pitch. The commentary will even point it out saying "if he's going to take the first pitch, might as well get ahead of him".
So you have to mix it up, and jump on the first pitch sometimes.Comment

Re: Pitches per Inning
My goal is 15 pitches per inning, but naturally I don't see that as often as I'd like. Like the post above points out, sometimes you just have to be aggressive if the CPU is gonna keep throwing strikes early. While that can lead to short innings, it can also help you drive up the pitch count if you get hits, and the CPU starts to pitch more gingerly.Comment

Re: Pitches per Inning
I'm not very patient most of the time so it's usually 8-12 as well. However, when I decide to be patient my goal is 15. That's 90 pitches in 6 innings and pretty much a guarantee to get to the bullpen fairly early.
