UConn, West Virginia set up home and home for 2018, 2020

Some news broke out of the A.D.'s office Saturday morning, as UConn has a new opponent at the end of the decade. West Virginia and UConn have scheduled a home and home that will see UConn travel to Morgantown in 2018, and West Virginia comes to the Rent likely the last week of September 2020, pending schedule clearance.

Manuel has kept his interest in playing Power 5 teams high, perhaps in an attempt to lure in any of those conferences for a possible invitation. UConn has scheduled games in the next 4 seasons against Virginia (2016, 2017), Illinois (2019, 2020), Indiana (2019, 2020), Missouri (2015, 2017), and Tennessee (2019, 2021).

Next season, UConn plays Missouri and Bowling Green at the Rent, and Virginia away.

We lost to 1-7 Toledo?! Seasons a wash, I'm getting canned lol.

Try not to beat down UMass too badly. I'm calling a 45-13 victory for the Huskies

          Pride of New England

UConn D stuffs UMass as offenses stay home, move to 8-1

In Bob Diaco's postgame press conference, he stated he felt like he forgot something in his pre-trip checklist before the bus ride to McGuirk Stadium.

Turns out, he really didn't. But technically, you could say Diaco forgot his offense back in Storrs.

In a game in which 7-1 UConn was expected to roll over 0-7 UMass, that really did not happen. While the defense showed up, the offense only pasted 28 points and looked less than stellar all day. Luckily the defense came.

In fact, the hapless Minutemen gave UConn a massive scare through the first half. Despite racing out to a 14-0 lead off receiving touchdowns courtesy of Tommy Myers and Noel Thomas, UMass fought back at the end of the half and got rolling with an INT from corner Jesse Montiero.

Following a pair of drops, Al'Terrian Harris reeled off back to back catches of 9 and 12 to pull closer to field goal range.

QB Demarcus Clayton, starting in place of shelved Troy Flutie, scrambled for 3 before firing to tight end Sharif Custis, who got two blocks up the middle and sprinted home to pull within 7 at the half.

Josh Marriner would do work on the next drive out of the half. The junior, despite being bottled up most of the way to this point, reeled off the first of his big second half gains, a 43 yard scamper off to the right snuffed out at the UMass 18.

Ron Johnson cleaned up the spare, catching a pass and bulling for 10 on his way to the house and a 21-7 lead.

UMass never got closer following a Matt Wylie field goal, but UConn still was unable to assert their hold on the game until a Marriner run early in the 4th. Marriner took a stretch right, got a great block from Matthew Walsh, and sprung it 50 yards before being dragged down at the 9.

Johnson punched it in, and ended the scoring at 28-10.

UMass did have a bit of fight in them following a fumble return TD from Jarrell Addo, but fortunately was taken off the board as Marriner was ruled down.

That would be about it, not a noteworthy game in any way at all aside from Marriner's 185 yards. However, 4 of his 24 carries were of 35 yards or more, and really made his numbers fool you. His running was rather average overall once again. Bryant Shirreffs did nothing outside of his two TD's. With UCF on tap next, we need someone to step up and play inspired on O next week.

Fortunately for us, our defense can win us titles. Because it seems the offense has been left at home this year.

whughes: I am very sorry for you. It looks worse for CMU next year with Rush graduating at QB and most of the D-Line leaving, so take it with a grain of salt. You'll be in a much better situation next year.

Note from the author: For new followers, create-a-coach sign-ups for the 2017 season will be live within the next 24 hours. I'll remind you of this when it goes up, but all you need to do is fill out the sign-up form, and I'll create you after the coaching carousel to fill a random OC/DC spot at a mid-major school, from where you will start your career. Remember, I choose randomly where you are going, and only one submission per user (so no one from last year will be allowed to make another). I'm hoping to see 2-3 submissions this season, but I'll take as many as we can get should we have more. Thanks!

That Texas State kid had a heck of a game, 6 touchdowns is crazy.

I'm pretty sure Central Michigan will fire me, if I stay Dan Enos will be gone for sure (assuming he's still the head coach there?)

Good luck against UCF, you need this win to stay in contention to play in the AAC title game

I know both you and Enos have "low" security (you are somewhere around 74% I want to say, Enos lower), but Enos is likely out the door. Guess there's still a chance you're around next year, but as I said a post up, in your best interests you really wouldn't want that.

Not in front of the game, but for others, I know Shea has a 100% security and A+ prestige (obviously, I mean that Marshall O is nasty), Freday has 100% security (somehow), Woodard has 85% (another somehow, I think he has done fine this year with what he has), and Willingham is at something like 80%.

Regardless, it doesn't look likely anyone is moving this offseason (aside from Shea, I'm almost certain he'll get an HC job somewhere), and that's good. Though I kind of hope Shea gets promoted, see what dynasty he can build with the Herd. But I'd take him as Diaco's OC too. That would be a match made in heaven, we'd be invincible!

UCF should be a good game. Obviously, if we lose it is very unlikely we win the AAC East, but the USF game next week means more at this stage. Much like last year, I have a feeling we can pull it out somehow.

Re: We have a football team too... Guru's UConn Huskies (NCAA 14)

Deep in the night of Hartford

Puyol walks UConn off winners over UCF

Amazing what 9 weeks can do for you. 9 weeks ago, UConn was 1-1, with serious questions about their rush defense. 9 weeks later, UConn is 9-1 with a rejuvenated, dominant defense.

And Bobby Puyol is still clutch. What else is new?

UConn is up to 9-1 after their 31-28 win over UCF, and sit likely one win away from a berth in the AAC Title Game.

And much like last year's game, UConn was able to win thanks to timely injuries from UCF and impeccable game management.

Like a lot of other games this season though, it took a bit for UConn to dig in and find their bearings on defense.

William Stanback got the party started about 5 minutes into the first when he escaped 4 tackles and sprinted 55 yards to the house for a 7-0 UCF lead.

While it took a little longer for UConn to answer, Ron Johnson capped off a 9 play drive (with Tim Boyle in the game, Bryant Shirreffs went down with a foot sprain temporarily). UConn tied it at 7 right before the end of the first.

UCF got another big play only a few seconds later when tight end Josh Washington fielded a Justin Holman pass, spun off a tackle in the backfield and rumbled to the house unchallenged.

Johnson and Josh Marriner responded, and Johnson capped off the next drive with a 1 yard TD and a tie ballgame.

UConn was able to finish the half strong and take a lead following a 45 yard pitch and catch to Thomas Lucas. Noel Thomas caught the last pass of the half in the end zone from 4 yards out to give UConn their first lead, 21-14.

Blowing out 4:42 of the 7 minutes on the clock in the 3rd, UConn let their defense rest and prepare some more while Marriner clicked off runs of 11, 12 and a 14 yard catch as UConn rolled into the end zone for the 4th time, off a 2 yard Marriner TD.

With Stanback only getting 7 carries in the first half, you'd figure he'd get more carries in the second half with his team down 14.

Wrong. Haha. I love being wrong.

Holman hit Drew Hawkins for a 40 yard gain following blown coverage on a wide receiver screen, the Holman ran for 21 yards to score, changing directions suddenly on a pair of defenders, who were left biting the dust.

But alas, there was something wrong with UCF.

Stanback went out of the game for injury, and didn't return. Strained pectoral. Sometimes the best things that can happen to your team happen by chance. I love it.

Both teams stuffed each other on defense on their next drives, which brought us to the all-important 4th quarter.

UCF marched down the field in 11 plays, highlighted by a Nate Harris tiptoe catch at the 2 to push UCF away from a 3rd and long. Stanback's replacement, Dontravious Wilson cashed in the touchdown with 3 minutes remaining.

UConn took their sweet time, getting Marriner carries of 1, 26 and 8 to go past midfield, then Damon Mitchell chipped in a 24 yard catch, and Marriner started to approach field goal range. Carries of 4 and 8, coupled with the fact UCF wasn't using timeouts, made time killing wicked easy for UConn. They centered the ball with 10 seconds to go, and called time with a second left.

Puyol is no stranger to pressure kicks. He kicked two in 2014 to top Tulane and SMU in back to back weeks. He has struggled a bit as a senior but his range is improved and hasn't missed much in his career.

Puyol's kick was an easy one, and he placed it right down the middle to send UConn to the top of the AAC (yes, USF lost). Funny how 9 weeks ago, we thought UConn was headed toward another average season.

                    Amazing what time can do.

I will never understand the AI clock management in this game. It's always been wayyy to easy to run the clock down to the last second like that. Good win nonetheless, as long as you take care of business next week the AAC East is yours

Eh, works for me! You'll see this is somewhat of a theme in both of the next games.

USF next, put simply, win and we're in. Regardless of what happens though, we are having far and away the best season of this dynasty and perhaps in UConn history. Can't complain from here out now!

UConn Seniors Class of 2016-17 -- We say thanks

CB Jhavon Williams: All-Conference selection in 2015 (and likely again in 2016) has been the top corner the past two seasons, and has been a rock starting for 3.

T Richard Levy: 3 year starter and a key piece of the O-Line in that time span. Did a phenomenal job protecting Bryant Shirreffs, Tim Boyle and Chandler Whitmer.

C Kyle Bockeloh: Honorable mention All-AAC in 2015, 2 year starter has emerged as possibly the top center in the conference in 2015, and best O-Lineman on UConn.

G Zach Rugg: 2 year starter who gave up a few too many sacks, but still was solid and made up part of a great line.

T Andreas Knappe: Another 2 year starter, who is absolutely huge. Became quite an effective run blocker.

DT Mikal Myers: Started only his senior year, but played well and was always mentoring the next man up in T.J. Newell. His leadership will dearly be missed.

LB Jon Hicks: Another one who only started one year, but did things right every game and accepted his role each week.

LB Omaine Stephens: Busted onto the scene in 2015 with his epic performance against Missouri, and got to start in 2016.

WR Noel Thomas: Reliable slot man who had his share of big games at big times in 2014 and the 2015 Heart of Dallas Bowl.

S Obi Melifonwu: 4 year starter. Had a monster freshman year, but took steps back performance wise in exchange for a bigger leadership role, and excelled there.

S Jordan Floyd: Had a spectacular 2016 after waiting his turn every year prior. Real ball hawk, made us not miss Andrew Adams too much.

FB Matthew Walsh: Wrestled the starting gig away from Jazz Clax in 2015, and was a tremendous blocker and a huge piece of the running game. Never complained about his number of carries or role, always did it with a smile.

FB Jazzmar Clax: Relegated to special teams in 2015, and never quite recovered.

K Bobby Puyol: Clutch. Need I say more? We'll miss him, no doubt.

P Justin Wain: Set the record for highest yds/punt last season, and improved over each of his 3 seasons starting.

QB Tim Boyle: Revelation in 2014, but stepped back into a reserve role in 2015. Dependable backup with experience, always kept the team in good hands.

WR Dhameer Bradley: Another reserve receiver who displayed great hands when on the field and played well. Accepted his role, and was a solid special teamer too.

WR Brian Lemelle: Never really panned out as a receiver, but a special teams ace, be it returning or coverage. He has some tough shoes to fill.

CB John Green: Saw less time this year because the D ran less quarter and dime, but showed good hands and was a serviceable reserve when needed.

DT Sean Marinan: Never saw the field much, but always worked hard and provided lots of depth the last 2 seasons.

S Ellis Marder: Another special teams ace who was caged in by safety depth the last 3 seasons.

The University of Connecticut, its staff, faculty, alumni and fans thank our seniors for their dedicated years of service to the team.

                            Mission Accomplished

UConn gets boost from unlikely source, locked into AACCG

Tell me, if any of you were to expect a walk-off victory, who would you expect to come through? Bobby Puyol? One of the running backs? Maybe the defense perhaps?

How about Jeff Matthews? Yeah, that's what I thought. The 6'1, 200 pound redshirt freshman receiver, who was making his first ever appearance on a college field, sure came in with a bang alright. On a day where seniors shine, it was his 12 yard TD catch with 23 seconds remaining that saved UConn from certain peril and lifted them past USF. As a result, UConn will march into the second American Conference Championship Game. More on that later though.

It was certainly an uphill battle for UConn most of the way on senior day. And it was made a nightmare by the inspired running of D'Ernest Johnson. The junior annihilated the UConn front 7 by pounding for 243 yards on the ground on 22 carries, more than pulling his weight in the Bulls offense.

Not as powerful as William Stanback of UCF last week, Johnson fought for every yard and used his speed to sprint past dazed UConn defenders all day.

Johnson's backfield mate, Marlon Mack, tacked on the first 6 points for USF on his 33 yard run (he also broke USF's career rushing record on that play), and USF, as expected, kept the game tied at the half, 14-14.

UConn struggled to find their bearings on both sides early, but the fact that Josh Marriner and Ron Johnson had some running lanes was good to see.

USF took a field goal right out of the half, and this set off a run of 3-pointers. Puyol responded from 41 yards out to tie at 17 for UConn, and a few drives later Mike Jones connected on another chip shot field goal for USF to make it 20-17 after 3 quarters.

Following some scares on defense, UConn came alive on offense when it mattered most ---- the 4th quarter.

UConn came just short of taking the lead at the start of the quarter, and instead settled for --- you guessed it --- another field goal, and UConn had to settle for a 20-20 tie.

Johnson's 62 yard carry on the next USF drive set up a TD run from QB Mike White, to give the Bulls the lead back 27-20.

Arkeel Newsome brought the return back to the USF 24, and proceeded to go straight back. Marriner's 5 yard loss forced Bryant Shirreffs, who had struggled most of the way, to start throwing. Thomas Lucas was the recipient of a 3rd and deep pass into the end zone, which he had in his hands but was knocked away by Deatrick Nichols. UConn had to settle for a field goal, and needed a defensive stop, badly.

For a team that hadn't been able to stop the run all day, that seemed a little easier said than done. But following a 15 yard Elkanah Dillon catch, USF's Johnson gained a grand total of 2 yards on his next 3 carries, forcing a 4th and 8 and a USF punt. Good timing too, as UConn was out of timeouts.

UConn had a buck 45 to do work, and 61 yards to cover.

Well, it didn't start well. Shirreffs went 0/2 on his first two throws, and got yours truly slightly concerned.

Fortunately, Tommy Myers caught a pass to the right and got 16 yards, more than enough for the first, and the drive continued.

Dhameer Bradley caught a 7 yard pass, and Shirreffs ran for 5. Bradley's 15 yard catch pushed UConn to the 18, but the clock was still ticking. Shirreffs ran for 6 more, but couldn't get out of bounds, and UConn had to go no huddle.

Friends, we have reached the climax of our tale. A man who wasn't even supposed to be on the field (Noel Thomas is usually in that position, but for unexplained reasons wasn't available for that play), made the catch of his lifetime. Fact of the matter is, it was his first catch, so slim competition there.

Jeff Matthews is a 6'1 200 pound receiver from Clifton, New Jersey, regarded as the 8th best receiver on the UConn team. Yeah.

I don't even think Diaco knew he was on the field in place of Thomas, but there he was. He separated from the zone coverage, hauled in the pass at the 1 and took 2 steps into the end zone. UConn with the lead!

A group huddled around Matthews and started to celebrate with 23 seconds left, as Jordan Floyd nabbed a White heave to lock up the win.

Friends, we are on to the AAC Title Game. A team that started 1-1 is now 10-1 and enjoying the best run of football in program history. Bob Diaco, the miracle worker, has brought us to the brink of the promised land.

But let's not forget, that on a day devoted to seniors, a redshirt freshman was the biggest hero. How about that.

Temple next to close out the season. #OneMoreGame
