MLB 15's Commentary Isn't As Bad As I Thought

So this year with the show I've been playing about 90% of my games and in my extra playing time Ive come to realize that the commentary in the show isn't as bad as I used to think it was.

Sure, it isn't the most lively or naturally flowing commentary but I feel like it compliments the game well. It kind of has an old school baseball broadcast feel to it: call the play, give a little insight... No more, no less.

Am I alone on actually liking the commentary?

With all the things that are more direct in line with actual sim baseball I don't even care what they do with it. SO many things need attention before commentary and that includes ambiance in the game sounds and obviously also the big one that has been missing so far in the sound department.

That being said they are doing a pretty decent job with it overall.

I've been defending the commentary. To me, there are other things that need to be addressed first. The commentary isn't horrible, it just hasn't varied much in the past few years. I think it would be a bigger issue if there were more lines that were irritating. Something like an unnecessarily loud Gus Johnson line from an old madden game. The show's commentary is just a bit dull. It fits baseball (baseball is my favorite sport, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't have more dull moments than most of the others)

I've found that as long as I don't X through all the cut scenes, its much better...I have a horrible habit of mashing thorough the game and then you only hear the bare minimum. The longer you let it play out, the better it becomes.

The commentary is stale but it's always been good.

I was just thinking about the commentary a week ago or so. I'm glad you brought this up.
I was one of the people really pushing for new commentary. I'd still like to see changes but it's not as bad as I was thinking when I first got the game.
The fact that it's simple is actually a positive to me now. NBA 2k commentary flows real nice and they do a good job adding stories more like real life but in the long run that's not necessarily good for a video game. I was getting real sick of hearing about the raptors changing their logo and pretty much every other little story every single game.
I've played so much of the show that the fact that it's simpler has made it more tolerable. To be honest I like that it's there but it's not really even noticeable at this point and maybe that's a good thing.

Gotta agree, to me it seems better than last year, not sure if it really is. I'd say keep improving it, adding lines. No overhaul needed. As others have said there are more important things to fix, seeing smth really weird every game nowadays, pop ups, balls hitting the pitcher all the time, too many double plays, outdated animations really a ton of things. None of them a deal breaker but they add up.

I don't like the repetitive phrases such as "ties him up in preverbial
(not sure exactly how to spell/say it) knots" or "How important will it be for him to throw that curveball for strikes" and then the other guy rambles on. Other than that the commentary doesn't bother me as much as other sports games.

I would agree with MythicalGnorme that SCEA needs to fix other things before commentary.

My problem with it is I pretty much know exactly what they are going to say. You get the same commentary every game in certain situations, like when a throw a curveball out of the zone, "do you ever want that pitch to be a strike," or when your draw a 2-1 count, "this is something we've seen from this guy a lot recently...", etc, etc. I don't have a problem with the actual announcers, just need way more lines and more dynamic lines.

I guess the question is: "What is reasonable to expect from a video game?"

No matter how many lines they record, its a finite number on the disc. At some point you are going to hear the same line repeated.

At this point, is it really realistic to expect them to scrap the old system and record all new lines with a new crew? There must be thousands of lines.

I think adding some each year (as space on the disc allows) and maybe working on some of the contextual stuff is what's realistic at this point.

There are certainly other things that should deserve more focus.

The problem with adding more conversational lines in sports commentary is that those lines become even more stale after a while.

I played NBA 2K14 and after a while I was sick and tired of hearing about my team's flex offense.

If you get the last out while the other guy is rambling, you get the best line this year..."Sorry to interrupt...." Greatest line added this year IMHO

                              the commentary is horrible...

the 2k series is the worst baseball to ever be released, but their bright spot was the commentary

MLB seems to be the opposite.
