UConn, BC mulling playing two game neutral site set at Gillette, Fenway
While the two have never agreed on much of anything through their histories, Boston College and Connecticut are easing in on playing a football game or two, possibly as early as next year.
While it is unlikely that the teams will play at either The Property or Alumni Stadium, there is a strong possibility that the game takes place at one of two iconic venues in the Commonwealth, Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, or Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox.
The Boston Globe has indicated the two sides have mutually agreed to play the game, but the main conflict is where and when to play. A home and home was discussed, but UConn A.D. Warde Manuel didn't seem to be very interested, largely because it could mean UConn would not host one out of conference game next year at Rentschler Field.
The solution? Neutral site.
Gillette Stadium is the favorite over Fenway to host the two teams in September 2018, though the possibility is still available to host the second game in 2020. Or, there could be no second game at all.
We're still waiting on confirmation, but this is looking more and more likely.
Here's what UConn's out of conference schedule could look like for the next 4 seasons (provided UConn gets 9 conference games each season in the Big 12):
2018:
@ Boise State
@ Syracuse
? @/vs. Boston College (Gillette Stadium)
2019:
vs. Illinois
@ Indiana
vs. Tennessee
2020:
@ Illinois
vs. Indiana
? @/vs. Boston College (Fenway?)
2021:
@ Tennessee
vs. Syracuse
