I sim almost all PAT's and kickoffs (when I'm doing them). Just seems useless haha. But it's effective, I've only allowed one kickoff return TD in this dynasty.

Reason McCray may have missed them is because he's listed as a punter, his awareness may or may not suffer.

UConn, BC mulling playing two game neutral site set at Gillette, Fenway

While the two have never agreed on much of anything through their histories, Boston College and Connecticut are easing in on playing a football game or two, possibly as early as next year.

While it is unlikely that the teams will play at either The Property or Alumni Stadium, there is a strong possibility that the game takes place at one of two iconic venues in the Commonwealth, Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, or Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox.

The Boston Globe has indicated the two sides have mutually agreed to play the game, but the main conflict is where and when to play. A home and home was discussed, but UConn A.D. Warde Manuel didn't seem to be very interested, largely because it could mean UConn would not host one out of conference game next year at Rentschler Field.

          The solution? Neutral site.

Gillette Stadium is the favorite over Fenway to host the two teams in September 2018, though the possibility is still available to host the second game in 2020. Or, there could be no second game at all.

We're still waiting on confirmation, but this is looking more and more likely.

Here's what UConn's out of conference schedule could look like for the next 4 seasons (provided UConn gets 9 conference games each season in the Big 12):

          2018:

          @ Boise State
          @ Syracuse
? @/vs. Boston College (Gillette Stadium)

          2019:

          vs. Illinois
          @ Indiana
          vs. Tennessee

          2020:

          @ Illinois
          vs. Indiana
          ? @/vs. Boston College (Fenway?)

          2021:

          @ Tennessee
          vs. Syracuse
          ?

Those would both be "home games" for BC. Do one and Fenway and one at Yankee Stadium. That would be cool.

Loving the BG shoutout too with the NCAA POTW. He would have 4 INT if I was his coach though.

If I recall, a 12-team conference would mean 8 conference games. 5 division games + half of the other division. In which case, a BC home-and-home is very doable.

Anyway, I've been gone for a week. Got some catching up to do.

                Back to Business

6th ranked UConn beats up hapless Pirates, move to 6-0

From 4:35 in the first quarter on, UConn showed that they are capable of being the best of the nation. With a much-needed blowout of winless East Carolina, UConn improved to 6-0 and will likely climb inside the Top 5 of Sunday's latest AP Poll.

As usual, it was the defense that led the victory.

Once Sam Hall led his team into the end zone midway through the first, UConn never looked back.

Bryant Shirreffs keyed UConn's first drive with passes of 16 and 12 to Damon Mitchell, then hit Jon Haden for a big 24 yard pickup. Redshirt freshman Jeff McNeal punched in the 3 yard TD out of the shotgun on a sweep, 7-7.

UConn's D stepped up, holding Kurt Benkert to only 2 passing yards that drive in a 3 and out. UConn would take over at their own 46, and it took Josh Marriner only 3 plays to get to the ECU 10. Mike Miller's field goal at the start of the 2nd made it 10-7 UConn.

ECU's last sniff of the game came before the half, when Benkert made his way down the field, hitting Quay Johnson and Marcus Craft for 13 and 28, then Anthony Scott for 21, getting closer to the end zone to take the lead.

                Uh-oh. But have no fear.

Jamar Summers saved the game with a nasty INT, cutting back in front of Trevon Brown, pushing him to the corner of the end zone, then making a falling catch while holding a foot in bounds. UCaaaaahhhhhhnnnnnnnnnnnnnn football!!

Shirreffs thanked his All-American corner by hitting Thomas Lucas for 14, Mitchell for 12, and Ron Johnson broke off a 17 yard run to set up UConn just outside the red zone. Arkeel Newsome got in on the action with a 14 yard sprint to the outside, but he and Marriner were stuffed on 1st, 2nd and 3rd and goal.

Conventional wisdom calls for a field goal, right? Time ticking away, no timeouts, just get 3 points to send the game to the half up 13-7. Right?

Coach Diaco thought it would be funny to mock ECU for not being prepared. He faked the field goal, and it worked. David Hamilton threw a perfect pass to Alec Bloom for the TD. Instead of a one score game, it was 17-7 UConn.

From there, it was all UConn. Shirreffs heave-ho'd a 55 yard bomb to Lucas, which went for a TD.

As soon as ECU made more headway on their next drive, Quintin Harrell snatched a Benkert pass near the end zone. A 29 yard Mitchell completion set up a Marriner TD, and Shirreffs set up himself with a 7 yard TD run to make it 38-7.

Point is, ECU never stood a prayer. Though UConn allowed a bunch of yards, the scoring defense kicked into overdrive and only allowed the 7 from ECU in the 38-7.

Shirreffs and Marriner had fantastic days, Shirreffs with 221 yards, more than a 60% hit rate and a TD, while Marriner ran for 115 to push his streak to 100 yard games in 5 of the first 6 games this season.

Back in The Property next week is UConn, when they face winless Cincinnati. But that is a huge, massive, military sized problem. If you know why, please join me in being deathly scared. If not, I'll cover it later.

                See ya then.

Thing is, I'm still learning what I can do with the editor to replicate Fenway, if anything. Gillette is already in the game (UMass' home stadium, which is weird because they only played there for parts of 3 years while McGuirk was being renovated.) I'd probably go MetLife anyway.

But in the AAC, we have 12 teams and I have 9 conference games.

I don't know. Maybe it's different in the Big 12. Or I can fix it with the editor.

Surprising to see those two teams who are typically pretty good (ECU and Cincinnati) winless this late in the year. That has to be dragging down the AAC and you in the rankings. Hopefully you can overcome that option, I know it's been difficult for you against Navy, regardless of their talent level or lack thereof.

                          Some leaky roof...

UConn staves off winless Cincy in double OT

Have I ever mentioned I hate the option?

If I can direct you back to last page, I mentioned in the game preview that Cincy, since hiring former Georgia Tech employee Ted Roof, has installed the dreaded, evil, triple option. I also stated that the winless Bearcats, in true pun fashion, had a leaky roof on the field this year.

                          Was I wrong or what...

It took a pair of overtime frames, 187 yards from Josh Marriner and about 3000 rushing yards from Cincinnati, but UConn held on in double overtime to not only keep the home win streak alive and well (14 games now, 2 seasons exactly), but also to keep UConn's chances at an undefeated season and college football playoff appearance alive and giddy.

But in no way did UConn deserve to win this one.

UConn was down early, because after stops from each side to start, Marriner put his 4th carry of the day on the turf deep in Cincy territory, and a Dameon Willis recovery meant that Cincy had some room to draw first blood. True frosh QB Will Curry would do just that, rumbling in untouched for the 7-0 lead from 6 yards out.

Marriner made amends for his rare mistake, and, thanks to being set up by a gorgeous 42 yard run from electric Jeff McNeal, pounded home a 3 yard TD to tie.

However, Kevin Roberts just didn't care. He took the very next play from scrimmage 80 yards for the TD. 14-7 Cincy after 1.

The game went back and forth after that. Marriner tied it with a 4 yard TD early in the 2nd, Cincy tacked on a field goal, UConn took the lead again with a long 45 yard TD pass from Bryant Shirreffs to Damon Mitchell to make it 21-17 UConn at the half.

However, the wheels came tumbling off UConn's bus not long after.

Curry rumbled for 21 yards on the second half's first play and Ira Miller followed up with a 6 yard run. Roberts broke off the second of 6 big runs by busting a pitch to the left loose for 40 yards and another lead, but more importantly, the lead (24-21 Cincy).

Arkeel Newsome took the ensuing return back to the Cincy 32, but Shirreffs made his first mistake and fired an INT to safety Jesse Brant, and Cincy took over at the UConn 7.

A-Back Avery Parrish had a harmless (for us) 7 yard run to start the drive, but Curry broke the next one for 35 and ended close to midfield.

He gained 25 yards on the next 3 carries before lineman/fullback Ryan Stout perplexed Bob Diaco's D even more with a 5 yard run. Roberts finished with a 4 yard TD run, his third of the day, and Cincy had a 31-21 lead on the #5 team in the land with time slipping away in the 3rd. Winless Cincy, mind you.

When in fear, call on a pint-sized, 5'9 (or something) running back. Marriner's 41 yard run on UConn's next drive set up a 9 yard pass to Thomas Lucas and eventually a 1 yard punch from big Al Hart to pull UConn within 3 at the close of the third stanza.

Fortunately, UConn stepped up and recorded a 3 and out for the first time since the first drive. However, when Shirreffs threw another INT to Carter Jacobs, UConn looked to be in danger.

Bob Diaco cut the crap from his self-described "softer than cotton candy" defense and sent everyone on every play from this point. With about 5 minutes standing between them and the possibility of a continued undefeated season.

Derek Robinson stuffed Curry for a 4 yard loss, then Curry fired two incompletions in a row to send a punt to UConn with 4 minutes to go. Newsome brought it back to the Cincy 48, and Shirreffs scrambled for 18 on 2 plays to move the chains. A pass to Mitchell for 17 pulled UConn into the red zone, and Marriner pushed UConn to the goal with a 6 yard run. However, the Huskies couldn't finish, and had to settle for the tying field goal with 2:52 remaining.

That's not good, because UConn wanted the TD. This way, if Cincy were to score, UConn may have only needed a field goal to tie.

It looked like Cincy was driving down field with time ticking away, but with a minute left the unlikeliest of heroes made potentially the biggest play of the season.

Curry fired a screen to Miller at the UConn 30, but Sam Rourke and Luke Carrezola were giving chase.

Carrezola decked Miller and the ball popped free. Following a series of missed dives by Bearcat linemen, backup linebacker Sammie Leonard scooped up the ball and stepped out of bounds.

However, Shirreffs tossed another INT, and we were going to overtime! Innnnnnn Hartford! 31 all.

Cincy got the ball first, and it took two plays for Cincy to score, as (guess who?) Roberts took a Curry pitch 24 yards past a couple of sprawled UConn defenders.

With the season on the brink, Marriner took carries of 10, 4, 5 and 5 to the UConn 1. Ron Johnson cleaned up with the tying TD, ensuring UConn got the ball first in the second OT frame.

This time it was Mitchell, who took a curl 22 yards to the 3 on an important third down, and Marriner finished to give UConn the 45-38 lead.

Now it was Cincy's turn to face the bottom of the cliff. Curry and Miller got a combined 4 yards on the first two plays, and Curry was held a yard short on third down. With a crucial 4th and 1, Roof and Cincy decided to.....throw? WTF?

Curry's pass floated innocently to the turf and UConn gutted out the win by the skin of its teeth. 7-0 never felt so exciting.

Did I mention I hate the option? I am officialy stumped. Strap on the green cape, because we have further confirmed our version of Kryptonite. At least it's not a 5'6 guy who can dunk on Dwight Howard though....

Point is, we probably could have won the game easier if not for Shirreffs' 4 INT's and Marriner's untimely fumble. But still, a near loss to a winless team is completely unacceptable, no matter what they run or if they have a 10 foot tall QB.

We have lots of work to do. But the streak is alive. Houston next. See ya there.

We did, barely. I have no idea anymore, but I'll keep trying. I think we'll see Navy/Army in the near future. With the new coach and young team for Cincy, this should be a one year bad spot (Look at Tulane, 0-12 two seasons ago to leading the AAC West now). But keep in mind, Ted Roof is in charge....

                          Thanks for checking in.

You should've been. But I mean, we're UConn. We find a way. You know this best, we don't rent. We own.

Fine. But remember, I'm the head honcho here. I've turned around this UConn team, even though we're still a bunch of misfits.

But you are the fan here. If this were Boston College, it'd be a different story.
