The Best Scoring Defense in the Nation

UConn fends off pesky Houston in defensive game to move to 8-0

Indeed we do. Have the best scoring defense in the nation, that is. And I love me a low scoring game.

For an air raid offense though, we sure have played some low-scoring games together. 24-21 in 2014, 22-17 in 2015, 24-21 in the 2016 regular season game, and now 20-17 this year. (Discard the 52-31 thumping we gave them in the AACCG last December).

Thing is, Bob Diaco is 5-0 now against Houston in his 4 year tenure at UConn. Not bad.

As usual, the defense came to play, and, if not for a few key stops from unlikely sources (Quintin Harrell and former JUCO transfer Travis Lumpkin), it could have been a different story, and 3-4 Houston could have been a bigger threat than they actually might have been.

However, this game was a bit different in the sense that UConn actually struggled on offense, especially Bryant Shirreffs. (Josh Marriner had a weird day too, but his stats were padded by a string of runs late against a tired Houston D.)

Yet, UConn did find a source of offense. Kicker Mike Miller. Heh???

Nothing remotely offensive happened in the first 6 minutes of the game, as UConn was stuffed on their first drive, and Sam Rourke knocked down Tre Pollock to end Houston's first drive.

RECORD WATCH: Cam Stapleton continued his marvelous career by breaking the UConn career sacks record on the first drive, set by Trevardo Williams in 2012. A major congrats are in order for Mr. Stapleton, who will look to add to his sack total (at 31 at that point) in the last 5-7 games.

UConn's next drive produced 3 negative plays, a -3 yard Marriner run (Joeal Williams on the tackle), a -1 Marriner run (Josh Johnson), and a big sack (Tyus Bowser). As a result, another punt.

But UConn's defense looked sharp again, as Harrell victimized Pollock in Houston territory for another INT for the monster linebacker/end.

Fortunately, it ended better for UConn as a Shirreffs 16 yard scramble set up Marriner for a 3 yard TD to make it 7-0 after a quarter.

Pollock recovered on the next drive though, hitting Latrell Martin for 7 and 13, Elton Dyer for 13, tailback Juan Day for 6, then Romello Brooker for 31. Following Stapleton "stapling" Pollock for career sack #32, Dyer ended up just short on 3rd and goal. Victor Woods' field goal made it 7-3.

I smiled as I looked at my game notes, because...

    *SOUND SIRENS*

It's 'Keel time!!! Special Teams wonder boy Arkeel Newsome brought back another (what's this, return TD #10 for his career or something?) 95 yards to break open the game, 14-3. And in defensive battles like the ones we have with Houston, 14-3 is breaking a game open. Don't judge.

Turns out the scoring in the 2nd quarter was far from over, as Pollock orchestrated another efficient drive, hitting Dyer for 24, 5, then taking it himself for a 9 yard scramble to set up Houston in the red zone. Pollock fired a laser to John Leday that just made it past the outstretched hands of Travis Lumpkin and went for a Houston TD, 14-10.

UConn had a bit of time (3:45 or so), so they tried to use every second of it.

Marriner's best carry of the day thus far (13 yards), allowed Shirreffs to scramble for 9 then find Thomas Lucas for 16. A pair of Marriner 6 yard gains and an 8 from Ron Johnson set up UConn at the 1. But...they..couldn't..punch it in.

Mike Miller's field goal made it 17-10 with :38 seconds to go in the half.

However, Houston wasn't quite done yet. Dyer brought the return to the Houston 31, and Pollock scrambles of (gasp) 25, 18 and 19 yards set up Houston with a field goal chance at the horn, which Woods converted to make it 17-13.

The offense did stop in the second half, but man did the game get good after.

A pair of Harrell tackles for no gain sent Houston packing out of the half, setting up UConn with some good field position at their 41.

Jeff McNeal did the heavy lifting this drive, as he accounted for an 11 yard reception, a 7 yard run and another 23 yard reception before Marriner was stopped short of the end zone. Miller added another FG for UConn, 20-13.

Houston didn't get a very good return (to their own 15), and Harrell once again made them pay. Harrell delivered a massive hit on a screen to Day (-6 yards in case you were wondering), then broke up Pollock's pass on 3rd down.

UConn got another great return (to the Houston 42), and were making good progress before Shirreffs threw an INT to Terrence Alexander on first down and from the 20.

Houston would again be stymied though. Pollock got a yard, Day gave it back, then Rourke pushed Pollock into Stapleton for career sack #33.

Newsome I swear was doing his best to save UConn, as he brought the return to the Houston 34 to the left..............but Shirreffs threw another INT. Joeal Williams. End of 3rd, 20-13. This had the makings of a classic.

Williams did return Shirreffs' INT to the long side of the 45, but Dyer picked up 9 on another catch, Pollock scrambled for 21, then fell on a lineman for a 3 yard sack of himself.

Rinse and repeat. Dyer for 19, Pollock for 7, then another failed screen for Day (-1 yards, Vontae Diggs for the TFL).

With Houston inching closer to the end zone, Houston wound up with a 3rd and goal, and Pollock fired an incompletion. However, because Tony Levine is a terrible coach (in game), Houston went for it.

Pollock was sacked by Lumpkin on the Corner Blitz. UCaaaaahhhhhhhhhnnnnnnnnnnn Football!!!!

But Shirreffs would throw his third consecutive INT. However, it did look like Raaquan Lewis did completely interfere with Thom Lucas on the pass, but, oh well.

With the clock now inside 2 minutes, Houston had a great shot to tie it up inside the UConn 15.

Stapleton knocked back Pollock for a loss of 2, and Pollock only gained 3 apiece on 2nd and 3rd downs to set up a pivotal 4th and 6 from the UConn 11.

Pollock lined up in the 'gun, and had a lane to the right with only Quintin Harrell standing in his way, the mountain of a linebacker.

Harrell destroyed Pollock for a one yard gain.

    UCaaaaaahhhhnnnnnnnnnnnn Football!

While the defense was pulverizing Pollock, Marriner demanded that Coach Diaco get him the ball, despite only having 40 yards to this point.

Diaco gave in, and Marriner rewarded his ingenious coach with 6 straight carries that covered 51 yards, and another carry after a quick breather for 9 to sew up a pretty little bow on another Houston-UConn defensive shootout.

While the two teams are likely moving to the Big 12 next season, barring a major change of heart from Bob Bowlsby, we can expect more great games in the future.

But I guarantee UConn is more concerned with the 8-0 record on their plate, the best start in school history. The scoring defense was phenomenal, but Pollock went a healthy 22-25 (not good for us), and Elton Dyer was open too many times (10 catches, most courtesy of slot man...Travis Lumpkin. He was picked on a lot in this one). However, I guarantee the offense was a one shot off-day. Marriner's too good for a bad game.

With the defense potentially being a problem following being dominant for 6 games, we continue our road trip to Texas with a Dallas date with Kolney Cassel and SMU, who I believe has no relation to Matt (cousins maybe?). I'll look into that.

We'll see you next time. Thanks as always for joining me on the island of misfits, with the UConn Hype Train. Rise Up Together!

Last two games have been close, thankfully the committee hasn't counted that against you guys.

Also, Josh Marinner for Heisman? Happy about that but, I'm a big Treon Harris IRL so....

Much closer than I'd have liked. But Houston is always weird, and the option is....well...the option. I think we're being helped with all these former undefeateds like UCLA, Ohio State, Oklahoma losing in recent weeks and 1-loss teams like Clemson and Minnesota falling last week. As long as we stay clean and everyone else beats up on each other, we should be fine.

Marriner is having a fantastic season, he has done very few things wrong this year and the line has really come together unlike what we saw early in the dynasty. Harris will be tough to top though. Not only has he been on top most of the season to this point, but his stats looked solid (don't have them in front of me...but they were good) and is guiding the #1 team in the land... Nixon is very good too, but Woulard won't last much longer, and Evans is splitting carries at Wyoming (damn Bo Pelini!).

              Texas-sized rout

UConn builds 41-7 lead after 3, take ninth straight W in rather boring game

The final score may not be representative of the type of game this was, but until the subs came in for UConn in the 4th, this game was headed to being potentially a 50 point win for UConn.

Although that didn't happen, UConn still got a refreshing change of pace from the hectic, chaotic games they played in the 2 weeks prior to the SMU game.

The blowout was on from the beginning, as UConn strung together a 12 play, 71 yard drive to open the game and got a TD grab from Jon Haden to give UConn their first lead. They never looked back.

Kolney Cassel fired an INT to Javon Hadley on the second play of the Mustangs' first drive, and UConn took over at the SMU 44.

While a touchdown wasn't in the cards, Mike Miller connected on his longest field goal of the season (36 yards) to this point to give UConn a 10-0 lead.

SMU did strike on the next drive though and allowed the game to stay close for a while.

Cassel heaved up a pass in double coverage aimed at Keyan Williams down the left sideline, and Cassel squeezed in the pass between Javon Hadley and Ross Sinclair. The end result was a 67 yard play and a subsequent 9 yard TD to Adam Taylor. 10-7 UConn after 1, and that would be it for SMU.

Jeff McNeal spearheaded the next drive with an outstanding 32 yard jet sweep, and Ron Johnson capped it off with a 1 yard TD plunge.

Jamar Summers robbed Cassel on the next drive, making a tremendous leaping swat, then picking off the next pass. Josh Marriner's 4 yard TD run signaled the start of the rout.

SMU went 3 and out, and Bryant Shirreffs had the pass game moving, hitting Thomas Lucas for 38 and Jon Haden for 18 as Miller tacked on another field goal to make it 27-7 at the half.

The second half started much like the first. Dan Gresham gained only 2 yards on 2 plays, and Cassel's incompletion led SMU to another 3 and out.

Shirreffs, Marriner and Johnson all got carries on the next drive, and Johnson's 6 yard TD was the finisher, 34-7 UConn. The lead swelled, as Sam Rourke forced another SMU punt with a big 3rd down sack, and McNeal's 11 yard carry set up a 1 yard TD to stretch the lead to 41-7.

UConn did place in the backups, and that obviously led the pair of TD's SMU's starters placed on said backups. Thus, a rout turned into 41-21. But still, UConn put together a complete game, however quite boring to play actually.

Marriner's Heisman race took a slight detour with an unspectacular game, only rushing 90 yards and a score, but Shirreffs had his most efficient day passing all season, going 17-19 for 218 and a score. However, once again it was the defense that stepped up and delivered a UCaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhnnnnnn victory! (Sorry...channeling my inner Boston here...we don't like UConn too much down there...)

Can UConn move to #1? Can UConn go unbeaten? Can we hit the CFP? UCF next in Orlando. That's always a tough game. See ya there on the UConn Hype Train.

Without a doubt, as I said to GravyBoat, with all these other former undefeateds losing, as long as we keep our nose clean we'll be fine, even if us, TCU and Florida stay unbeaten.

It was Toledo.. coach OK back there? First he can't remember players, now who he just played? Haha. It's fine. However, your approval rating is the lowest of the three CMU coaches....

              I am so sorry.

Right... Toledo, not buffalo... Maybe this is why we can't win a game... Lol

The most shocking thing in the recent updates isn't that you've stayed unbeaten (well done!), it's that New Mexico State is in the "Also Receiving Votes" category.

By the skin of their teeth

UConn boots walk-off field goal to top UCF, cap 15 point second-half rally

Now that I've caught my breath, let me say welcome back to the UConn hype/soul train. Man do we miss The Property.

In the next to last game of UConn's road swing, our #2 Huskies damn near bit the bullet, met their match in the form of the Central Florida Knights. After getting in a 22-7 hole as late as the third quarter, UConn finally got it together and strung together a 18-0 run to close the game and gut out the win.

The big reason for the lack of offense from UConn early? No run game. UCF's defense, for 3 quarters, completely shut down Josh Marriner and Bryant Shirreffs and forced UConn to win with their defense, which they can do anyway.

It was bad from the beginning, as Shirreffs tossed an INT to Kyle Gibson deep in UCF territory, and the corner brought it back to the UConn 12. C.J. Jones was held to -4 yards on the first two plays, and UConn almost escaped calamity. However, Quintin Harrell, by far the slowest of UConn's linebackers, was matched up on UCF WR Drew Hawkins on the 3rd and 14, and paid for it. Hawkins walked into the end zone untouched, UCF had a 7-0 lead.....

Make that 6-0. Lance Frazier pushed his PAT right. (THANK YOU SUPER SIM!)

That would prove to be costly later, but it's not important now.

UConn had their best drive of the game immediately after. Shirreffs scrambles for 8, Marriner gets carries of 3 and 5 to move the chains. Shirreffs hits Tommy Myers for 15. The same duo connect for 16. Shirreffs finds Damon Mitchell for 18. Rashad Harris for 6.5, setting up a 3rd and goal from the 1. Ron Johnson couldn't punch it in though, and UConn had to settle for a field goal......

Except Mike Miller pushed it wide left. From 22 yards out. Crap..

Fortunately, UConn escaped disaster again. Tyler Harris hit tight end Josh Washington for a big gain of 20, then Jones broke 4 tackles in the backfield before galloping 31 yards inside the 5. UConn held UCF from there though, and Frazier connected on a chip shot field goal to give the Knights a 9-0 lead early in the second quarter.

UConn's next drive ended short, though, as Johnson failed to convert a short 3rd down, and UCF took over midway through the second with a chance to go up 3 scores.

Fortunately, Harris attempted a heave-ho downfield and Jamar Summers picked it off and brought it to the UCF 43, so UConn was saved for now.

Shirreffs did most of the work on the ensuing UConn drive, hitting Haden for 13 on a 4th down, then scrambling for 18. Marriner cleaned up from 2 yards out and got UConn on the board, 9-7 with 2:10 left in the half.

UConn was close to holding UCF scoreless and taking the 9-7 game into the half, but Tyler Harris gashed the UConn D for scrambles of 9.5, 16, 18 and 20 yards to set up UCF with a goal to go situation. After not getting in, Cam Stapleton sacked Harris (career sack #34) and held the Knights to a field goal.

Though not, 9-7, it was still only 12-7. But UConn needed to get something going on offense, quick.

However, they'd have to wait until Washington walked into the end zone with no one around him on UCF's 5th play from scrimmage in the half. 19-7 UCF.

Shirreffs started the comeback with a 27 pass to Myers, and pushed toward midfield but.....

another INT was thrown to 'backer Jordan Franks. UCF ball at the right side of the 45.

Jones broke many a UConn tackle in the backfield and beat everyone to the 4. Fortunately, UConn held up at the goal and forced Frazier and UCF to another field goal, 22-7 with 3:21 to play in the third. Time was clearly ticking for UConn, and they needed a score to keep the game alive. Otherwise, you could've started to kiss the perfecto goodbye.

Marriner finally found a hole for the first time in the game, taking his first carry on the drive 25 yards to the 49. Carries of 3, 6 and 3 more set up a 12 yard Shirreffs scramble. Shirreffs hit Jeff Matthews on an out route for 14, then Haden coming in for 11. Marriner picked up the 2 yard TD, then kicked the PAT to make it an 8 point game, 22-14.

Whew. UCF still had a chance to extend the lead at the end of the third, and were looking good to set up a long drive. But on a 3rd and 5, Hawkins dropped a wide open pass, and had to punt.

                        Whew.

Marriner picked up 9 and 9 yards, then Shirreffs hit Jeff McNeal for 23 out of the altered shotgun form, and that set up a 1 yard fullback rumble from Al Hart. But the work was not done for UConn yet. A 2-point conversion would tie up the game at 22 with 6:20 left in the 4th. Shirreffs sent Haden and Mitchell on slant routes, and Haden ended up open crossing across the end zone. Shirreffs floated the pass to Haden, and it fell gently into his hands.

                        Tie ballgame!

No team could capitalize through the 4th though, and UConn ended up with the ball at their own 45 with 2 minutes to go.

Shirreffs got UConn in great position immediately with a 21 yard pass to Mitchell on a curl route. McNeal got a carry of 2 and 7 1/2 to set up 3rd and short, then took the 3rd down 10 yards, well within Mike Miller's field goal range. Marriner put the ball in the middle of the field for Miller, and UConn called time with 2 seconds to go. UCF tried to ice Miller, but the real ice was in his veins.

Miller drilled the kick right down the middle, and UConn walked off with a great 25-22 win, overcoming the 15 point hole they got themselves in out of the half.

Another solid win, yes. But too close....

So I pose this question. Can I stop playing close games? Or maybe this. Can I get out of this season without having a heart attack?

UConn has done the improbable in 2017 in getting out to their best start in school history (10-0). We now stand 3 wins away from the College Football Playoff, and 5 from our first national title in school history.

Damn. Lot of pressure. Can UConn keep it up against a quality opponent in South Florida?

Join me on the UConn funk train to find out. Peace.

My jaw nearly hit the floor when I saw that too. Doug Martin coached these guys to a blowout win in I believe the GoDaddy.com bowl (now the Time Warner Cable Bowl in this 'chise) last season, then left for Central Michigan. Ex-Rutgers coach Kyle Flood is the new head coach, and he has clearly done a fantastic job. They've got a lethal offense for a Sun Belt level team and the defense is really good.

This season's been kind of weird for Group of 5 teams to reach the Top 25. Marshall obviously is following up on their CFP run last season, Western Kentucky has had a great season, Western Michigan and Navy are knocking on the door of the top 25, and we'll see a few others soon.

It'll be interesting to see, if you make the college playoff and win the NC, how well the team will be next year in the Big XII with a much tougher schedule strength.

Oh without a doubt. And we're far from done with these types of games.

It's not only that, but we are losing a lot next year, in addition to the harder schedule. Obviously we won't be as good breaking in a new QB, RB, WR, TE, a few guys along the OL, and replacing a record-setting DE, an LB or two and our All-American CB. I have no idea if the CFP is in reach, or even the New Year's Six, so this year is really boom or bust. Otherwise, might be another two seasons or so before we contend again when guys like D-Ham, McNeal and Rourke are veterans.
