Real Talk with J.D.: Examining the College Football Playoff Landscape

Welcome back to Real Talk with J.D., I am J.D.

Another rivalry week has come and passed, and with it sent shockwaves across the college football land and messed up polls all over the place.

Let's start at the very top with former #1 Florida. The Gators really only needed to win to virtually lock up a CFP berth, regardless of the SEC Title Game. However, Florida State went in and upset the Gators, and knocked their hated in-state rivals down to #5, opening up the CFP race already.

However, things took a stranger turn when Oklahoma went in and upset #2 TCU, the only other undefeated in the land not named UConn or Florida. Fortunately, TCU only fell to #4, and need only to win in their last game against West Virginia to lock up the Big 12 and a playoff berth.

Meanwhile in Hartford, CT, #2 UConn won against Temple to move to 12-0, and, as it turned out, become the last undefeated team in the land. UConn moved up to #1, and they are likely in the CFP regardless of how the American Title Game goes against Tulane.

      So who joins UConn?

If #2 Oklahoma wins Bedlam against OK State, I see no way Oklahoma falls out of the top 4. If TCU wins their finale against West Virginia, I see no way they win the Big 12 and are almost assured a CFP spot. Now #3 UCLA just needs to win the Pac-12 Title Game against Oregon to go back to try and defend their title for the third straight year.

Florida finishes at 11-1, and now a win in the SEC Title Game is necessary for the Gators to keep their playoff dreams alive.

So what happens if anyone loses?

Oklahoma has no safety net, so as I said, it's a win and in scenario for them. TCU likely falls out completely with a loss unless something really strange happens with Florida and UCLA.

Florida would fall out if they lose the SECCG to who will be Ole Miss, and UCLA is the only one with a bit of a safety net, as they have only one loss to a ranked Oregon State team.

Teams like Auburn (10-2, #6), Oregon (10-2, #11, faces UCLA in Pac-12 Title Game) and Virginia Tech (10-2, #14, just got whooped by Virginia to dim their chances), have the best shots outside the top 5, and 9-3 Ole Miss will jump into the conversation if they win against Florida in Championship Week.

In simple terms, it's anyone's race still. Except UConn. We know where they are headed.

And it only took every other undefeated team in the land to lose to get there.

I can't remember at this time (might have been #2 at this point), but I know going into bowl season he is #1 in the country with a little over 1800 yards. I think Nixon is #3, and a kid from Texas State is #2.

Basically, if Marriner goes wild in the bowl game(s?) he could top 2,000 and join the likes of Donald Brown in immortality.

One game away from the playoff, good luck against Tulane. Not to jinx, but I do feel that if you lose you're out. It looks like that'll be the case for any of the Top 4, even with UCLA playing a team ranked #11. I've seen the game be pretty unforgiving to teams to fall to unranked opponents, but none of that matters if you win - so the goal is simply enough.

Not too happy to see the Commonwealth Cup head back to Charlottesville but I am liking seeing schools from the non-power conferences be ranked.

I think you are probably right, and winning would make the whole thing easier for everyone. But just look at this for a minute (long-winded, I know).

You'll see in a second that Oklahoma did lose to OK State, and in effect it's now a 6 horse race for 4 spots (Marshall won't get in because of their two losses in a weak conference past them, WKU and Rice. And there's no way a 9-3 team is getting in this year.) TCU won, and is already locked in by virtue of winning the Big 12 and going 11-1. The other 3 in the top 4 would make things easier if they win.

If anyone was to lose, Auburn is logically the next team up. However, I don't think they really deserve to get in. Their two losses were to an unranked Tennessee team and a 9-3 Ole Miss (who has been in and out of the rankings all year, only recently have they hit the top 10-15). Not only that, but they aren't even playing in their conference title game.

So let's say we lose and everyone else wins. Would you put us in over Auburn, knowing that we made our conference title game, went perfect through the regular season and only lost to the second best team in the conference? Sure, strength of schedule isn't in our favor, but we can't really help that. We played some solid teams out of conference...

Oregon is the other team with a legitimate shot, but they need to beat UCLA. Otherwise, it's moot.

But let's say that we lose and Oregon beats UCLA. Florida wins and jumps to #2 behind TCU. Do you put in Oregon, with UCLA in the other game, or do you put us in with our 12-1 record and weaker schedule? I'd put UCLA in.

Sorry, speech over. But there's lots of different things that can go into this, and that's what makes this season unique. There's still 6 different teams, and about a million different scenarios.

It definitely is going to be a great playoff. TCU is interesting because the Big 12 had a bunch of solid teams this year, I really hope we get to play them if we win.

I think it should go to Oregon, if they win they'd have a better resume than Auburn overall. They do have identical records, but Oregon has a bit better losses (Ironically, Ole Miss and Oregon State, who was ranked and the only team to defeat UCLA this year).

Oregon has some very good wins in a ranked USC team, Arizona St. and Arizona I believe, and with a win over UCLA they'd look really good. Should either us or Florida lose, then we can talk about Auburn. However, Auburn likely needs a miracle and a half to get in.

As far as Coach Crenshaw goes, looks like he's about to get canned after a 4-8 season. Is UConn in the market for a new offensive coordinator? *fingers crossed* lol

Congratulations on the undefeated regular season! Rooting for you to take the big trophy home in the end.

In my young CAC first year 4-8 it seemed like our offense was really on or not at all! Hopefully next year will be better!

Yeah...lot of pressure on me for sure.

I think it is the end for Coach Crenshaw at CMU. But that's good, it wasn't getting much better. I'm sure you'll turn up somewhere. UConn is a good candidate for losing both coordinators (Denbrock and English) with the season we've had.

I think Kaelyn Willingham is a possibility to come here after the season Rice has had. The spread option with D-Ham, Johnson, 'Keel and McNeal? Deadly.

Brian Woodard could be on the move up as well, Joey Duckworth had a phenomenal year for him out in Athens. He'd be a great mentor for D-Ham.

Thanks Harlee. Been a great season for us, but we've shown weakness lately. Hopefully that doesn't catch up to us.

4-8 is fair for you guys. You had a young team, and are returning a lot for next year (That is, if UTSA keeps you past this year). But Josh Thomas was wildly inconsistent at QB, the run game didn't show much....Defense didn't help you much either. But you've got to love that upset of ranked Western Kentucky earlier in the year...

This game is basically the Tulane D against Marriner. The 101st rushing defense doesn't sound very promising against the Heisman hopeful

Looking at those Tulane numbers, you sure that isn't me coaching? All offense, no D?

Nah, no it isn't. Those pass/rush numbers should be reversed. I would never throw for 320 yds per game .
