Rory McIlroy PGA Tour: 1080p @ 60 FPS on both consoles?

I posed this question in the EA Sports Tiger Woods PG Tour forum, since an officially Rory McIlroy PGA Tour forum doesn't exist yet, but I didn't get an answer, so I'll pose it here: will this game run at 1080p at a locked frame rate of 60 FPS on both consoles? If not, what are the resolutions and frame rate ranges of each?

I've googled, binged, yahooed and forumed every avenue I could think of and came up with nothing more than what the PS4 version's video output options are (720p, 1080i, and 1080p), which of course tells you nothing about the game's "native" resolution and I've come up with a big goose egg. Gamers who've followed Frosbite 3's path so far are *speculating* that it will be 720p @60 FPS on the XB1 and 900p @60 FPS on the PS4. Many of the screenshots I've seen look more like 1080p, but then again, I thought the You Tube gameplay video that was posted earlier this week looked good at 720p.

If nothing else, I figured the well connected staff here at OS would be able to track this information down and report it

Add one more channel to the list... Twitter. I Tweeted this question to EASPORTSGOLF on Twitter and they've answered tweets before and after mine, but are silent on mine. I understand that they might be muzzled on answering questions like this, but at least tell me you can't comment on it at this time... (sigh)

I guess I'm likely ok no matter what if it's at least 720p and *always* 60fps.

Would like more of course, but FPS is the king for me.

Knowing what I now know, if I had to bet, my money would be 720p and greater than 40 FPS (I have doubts about a locked 60 FPS in the variety of environments this game will present) on the XB1, and 900p @>40 FPS on the PS4. Really though, I don't have enough data to even call that a SWAG.

I've asked a few people. If I get anything official I'll post it.

Thanks Steve, if you manage to get anything on this it will be "breaking news" and you'll be trending far and near

I'm inclined to agree with you Chairman; it's now obvious that EA Sports has avoided comment on this and overlooks questions about it. Sooner or later they're going to have to face the music on it, but I'd wager that won't happen until release day, or later.

I'm curious, what would you rather have with this game, 1080p @ 30 FPS, 900p @ 40 FPS, or 720p @ 60 FPS? With Unity 4, I'd rather go 1080p @ 30 FPS, but with Frostbite 3, I think I'd rather go 900P @ 40 FPS. There's a huge difference, IMO, in the way The Golf Club feels (especially for putting) at 40 FPS, versus 30 FPS.

Agreed, 900p and 40fps would be a nice compromise.

Since a new user is not allowed to link to an article, I am going to scoop out a few things to explain why games are 30 or 60 fps on consoles. Also why you will not see something locked at 40 or 45 fps.

Understanding the Importance of Frame Rate

Volume developer Mike Bithell explains the importance of faster frame rates.

Varying frame rates have been a hot topic in the past few years, but do you know the real benefits of a game running at a faster frame rate? IGN spoke with Mike Bithell, the developer of the upcoming stealth-'em-up title Volume, to better understand frame rate, its importance, and why games run at 30 or 60 frames per second instead of something in between.

Frame rate is linked to monitor refresh rates, Bithell explains, which traditionally are 30Hz and 60Hz."It's a historic thing. The refresh rates on monitors were standardised a long time ago that they were multiples of each other. So you know how data is either 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512? They double up. It's a similar thing with frame rate, it was basically the screen refresh rates."

Hypothetically, you can run a game at 45 FPS, but as Bithell points out, when designing a game you wouldn't want to go from 30 to 45 because it would involve animating one-and-a-half frames. Instead it's far more effective to double the frames.

Seems reasonable, I guess. You're probably right; and honestly, 30 seems much more likely....

BTW, new users really can't post links? That's interesting. I never knew that.

I understand what Bithell is saying in terms of maintaining stability of the frame and the avoidance of screen tearing, by keeping the frame rate at a multiple of the screen refresh rate; however, I've seen plenty of games that don't use a locked frame rate. The Golf Club, for example, defaults to having Vsync off ... and wisely so I might add. The XBox One version, and to a lesser degree, the PS4 can't maintain 30 FPS on a lot of courses and when they can't, you get frame skipping or jumping, which I find far more annoying in a golf game than screen tearing.

I leave vsync off on all three versions of The Golf Club because I'd rather have the more fluid feedback of the golfer's animation in response to my stick movement, with an occasional bit of screen tearing (which I don't notice to a significant degree during the swing anyway because my attention is focused on the golfer), than random frame skipping.

I know there won't be an option to lock vsync at anything other than 30 or 60 FPS, but I'd also like to have the option to leave it OFF.

When EA Sports did their USTREAM prelaunch event for Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12, they took questions from the viewing audience and answered them during the stream. If we don’t have the resolution and frame rate answers by Thursday, I’ll pose this question during their planned USTREAM event for RMPGAT on Thursday… well, provided they’re taking questions like they did then. For some reason, they don’t seem to like this question though
