    Custom Packages

Here is another feature that was inexplicably removed and never re added. It is well overdue. I would love to be able to design custom packages that I would use depending on the situation in game. I cannot fathom a way this could be cheesed online as long as they make it so you couldn't put a WR at QB in any formation other than wildcat and such. This could go with custom playbooks so you could set up packages for each formation. Would be nice if we got formation subs to go with it as well.

I agree with this completely. But was this ever in the game before? Was it something they added on the Xbox-PS2 after they moved on to Last-Gen?

Anyways, I wish they were fully customizable and that you could even choose the order in which they appeared in-game. The easiest way to make sure they aren't cheesible online is to just allow the "generic packages" online I think. I'd love to have the ability to have multiple WR lineups as well as backfields on offense and then a vast array of defensive line fronts. I'd actually prefer this system to formation subs.

Yes they had custom packages on PS2 Madden and I'm pretty sure PS1 even had them.

No, custom packages on the right thumbstick didn't get into the game until later on in the PS2 cycle (but before Madden NFL 06 on the XBOX 360). Possibly Madden NFL 2004, but not 100% positive.

Presumably, they were cut and never brought back on account of the protest against online "cheesing"; for example, people used to complain a ton about unusual substitutions such as deploying a wide receiver at tight end.

As the game's AI gets more robust and the gameplay balance continues to get refined, I think we'll see the training wheels gradually come off, with respect to personnel deployment.

Personally, I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to line up a WR as an inline TE every down, but if I do I should suffer the consequences in run blocking / pass blocking (when held in as an extra blocker against a blitz, for example) / perhaps even simple interaction results against larger players causing a larger fatigue hit; enough of a penalty on all these fronts to discourage users from deploying smaller and faster players who physically can't handle playing the physical inline Y position as they would never truly be effective there.

My favorite was using Miami, I think that was the name of it, brought in a big beefy DT. And for the Pats it was always Wilfork. I loved throwing TD's on the goalline to Wilfork. And I think they were in Madden 11 or 12. But I am not positive, I remember it was somewhat recently.

There are formations now that allow you to throw to Wilfork.

Its the heavy set in the 49ers playbook. I have a lot of fun with PA fakes and dumping it to big Vince for a TD in my franchise

Any confirmation on the formation subs? It was previously in NCAA for sure. I should not have to spend the first quarter of every game more concerned with adjusting formations than play calling.

I remember this on os2, but if it somehow gets abused or screws up the gm, then have a patch on standby to nuke into outer space

Or, even better - have a toggle on/off setting...

Seems like a fairly basic feature. Should also be able to match up my defensive backs with specific receivers. Patrick Peterson should be able to follow Calvin Johnson all over the field.

                        Re: Custom Packages

This thread all over the place and it's confusing. From what I have gathered posters are talking about 3-4 different features that have either been included at some point or are included now.

                        1. Formation Sub Packages. Generic sub packages that have been in the last few versions of the game. e.g. LB Rush in a Nickel Formation. The current problem with this setup is that if you use "Coach Suggestion" playcalling these sub packages don't carry over.

                        2. Formation Subs. These have also been in the game for the last few years albeit with a painstakingly frustrating option for completing them. You should have the ability to make these changes pre-game and during the season. The last few years these have only been able to be accomplished in the playcalling screen.

                        3. Player Matchup feature. This allows a player to designate the exact matchup against an opponent player for the entire game. This used to be a feature but has not been for sometime. From what I remember this function was kind of hit or miss. The DB did not always matchup with who you wanted him to.

                        4. Custom Sub Packages. This I honestly never remember in any version that I've played since '91 but I'm old and I forget things. This would be different than your generic sub packages and from what I gather kind of a sub package/formation sub combo?

I guess you would only use this in a very specific game situation. I would say a more user friendly formation sub menu would probably cover 95% of game situations but this function would give users that extra 5%. Personally, I'd rather have more user friendly formation subs. Previous madden versions required you to set them each game in the pause menu and at this point I would take that over what we've had the past few years.

Oh man, where do I begin with this? This will be my 24th year purchasing the Madden Football game and I would put this at the top of my wish list. Sub-packages that I can edit before/during the season and not have to change EVERY SINGLE GAME. This blows my mind that this is not "in the game" EA.

Match-ups and sub-packages are a critical component to NFL football strategy. If i have a receiving back that I want in on a certain shotgun package, why can't I change it before the game and it sticks all season long or until I change it again? Screw all the cheeser's that abuse this online. Why should EA allow a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch? "If its in the game....its in the game".....and there's no reason customizing sub-packages should NOT be in the game.

I hope this tread gets a good amount of views/replies because I'm very curious about how the rest of the community feels about this issue.

I agree, I certainly miss formation subs. Should have packages where you can put your best pass rushers in on certain situations. Should be able to choose which linebackers are in on one or two linebacker formations. Should be able to make defensive assignments. If someone puts a wr in at te then the de or lb should be able to run him over knocking him on his *** and go straight to the qb, unless of course he has the attributes to play the position. A normal wr should have a hard time getting off the line of scrimmage. Also, the game should still list him as a wr on the field before making defensive play calls so you could still have a corner on him. Hate it when they make the game for everybody less realistic instead of doing the programming that would take away the cheese.
