Yeah I'd like to think we could dominate this team, but you never know - especially against those pesky, no-huddle spread attack teams.

I'd like to try to establish the running game. Based on last week's results, we need to work on that area. Hopefully this is a game where we can get an early lead and can run the ball a ton in the second half.

Thanks djp...that was a very fun game and fun way to re-start this thing.

Excellent debut for Ryan Jean. 7 for 107 and a key conversion. Not bad for a true Freshman!

You gotta talk to Jimmy Williams about that negative yardage due to sacks. -52 yards!?!?!? He's gotta "GET RID OF THE BALL!"
I really had trouble protecting the QB for some reason in this one. I'm hoping this was just a product of playing a great LSU defense. I definitely envisioned him doing better on the ground. We need to protect him first and foremost though or he'll get killed.

Ryan Jean is going to be a star. I'm thinking that by his junior season, he will be mentioned in the same breath as superstar RB Reggie Moore(my first and only Heisman winner in this dynasty).

Thanks all for checking in...the next game will be played today, results posted in the next day or two.

Game 2, Year 10 (2019 season): Northwestern Wildcats at #1 Tulane Green Wave

          NR 20 -- 0-2
          #1 37 -- 2-0

With it appearing that the two teams would go into halftime tied up at 17-17 following a Northwestern field goal with 0:01 to go in the second quarter, sophomore KR Joel Ryan spun past Wildcat defenders and returned the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown as the first half clock expired, giving the Green Wave a 24-17 halftime lead and a significant shot of momentum heading into the break. The kickoff return touchdown was the third of Ryan's career.

#1 TULANE PULLS AWAY FROM PESKY NORTHWESTERN IN THE SECOND HALF FOR A CLOSER-THAN-EXPECTED 37-20 VICTORY; QB WILLIAMS INJURES PECTORAL, EXPECTED TO MISS "AT LEAST" 7 WEEKS

Big days from RB Davis, WR Jean, and KR Ryan helps spark Green Wave to 34th straight victory at the Superdome | Back-up QB Atkinson spotty in relief duty, Geezy refuses to immediately declare him next week's starter | SEC road date at Auburn next on tap for Wave

New Orleans, LA -- It was a bittersweet Saturday evening at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome for top-ranked Tulane, as they defeated a very game-Northwestern Wildcats squad 37-20 however lost starting redshirt freshman QB Jimmy Williams for a significant chunk of the remainder of the season in the process. Junior RB Bernie Davis scored two first half touchdowns and sophomore KR Joel Ryan's 94-yard kickoff return touchdown on the final play of the first half helped pace the defending national champions to a 2-0 start to their season.

Ryan, last year's winner of the "Best Return Man" award and a Preseason All-American this season as a return man, helped Tulane seize the momentum heading into halftime, giving the Green Wave a 24-17 lead that they would never relinquish the rest of the way. The kickoff return touchdown was the third of Ryan's career, after scoring two in one game in last season's 42-17 home win versus Texas Tech.

QB Antoine Atkinson held down the fort in spot duty, however Geezy was noncommittal about his status as the new starter moving forward.

In the second half, junior backup QB Antoine Atkinson came in for Williams, who was hurt while being hit on a pass attempt midway through the third quarter. Atkinson's 5-yard touchdown pass to redshirt senior WR Larry Woods made the score 31-17, putting his team comfortably ahead with 3:04 to go in the third quarter. Atkinson finished the contest 4 of 7 for 40 yards and 1 touchdown, however he did throw a costly interception deep in his own territory which could have been disastrous. Fortunately, the Green Wave defense stood strong and held Northwestern to a field goal to make the score 31-20 late in the third.

The extended game action was the first for Atkinson since his freshman season, when he was forced to play virtually the entire 2017 BCS National Championship Game versus USC following former Tulane starter Jamie Manning's injury on the first play of the game, a game the Green Wave lost 20-13. Atkinson finished the national title game 12 of 21 for 155 with no touchdowns and 1 interception, and guided the Green Wave to within a yard of tying the score on the game's final play, completing a short slant pass to former Green Wave star RB Reggie Moore, who was tackled at the 1-yard line as the clock expired.

RB Bernie Davis, who scored 2 touchdowns on Saturday, will need to help pick up the slack in Williams' absence.
Williams, a promising redshirt freshman making just his second start of his career, left the game with what sources are saying is a torn pectoral, an injury that will leave Tulane without its top signal caller for at least the next 7 weeks. Tulane head coach D. Geezy was evasive about who would be the starter moving forward and despite him being listed #2 on the depth chart, refused to immediately declare Atkinson the team's new signal caller.

"We're going to do a lot of study this week to determine what we're going to do moving forward at the quarterback position," said Geezy.

"What I think is this - Antoine (74 ovr, 88 spd, 78 thp, 83tha) certainly has earned his job as the week to week back-up quarterback. He is a very fast quarterback in regards to foot-speed and his game directly applies to a lot of the concepts we run with Jimmy in regards to the zone reads, sprint outs the options, etc.

"On the other hand, redshirt senior QB Preston Fields (81 ovr, 71 spd, 82 thp, 87tha) is a guy our staff holds to a high level of esteem and is a very polished passer. Where as Antoine may be a better fit for the offense we run with J-Dub at QB, there may be some consideration to getting back to being more of a traditional pro-style attack like we had with Manning prior to this season. And if that's the case, Preston may be the better fit. Who knows? Maybe both will play. We'll see."

Tulane (2-0) will travel to face Auburn (1-1) next week at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The Green Wave blew away the Tigers last season 41-16 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.

A really unimpressive game stats wise. Great job on the win though.

Re: Coach Geezy in the Big Easy: Our City, Our Team | Part II - The Golden Age of Tul

Talk about winning the battle but losing the war...losing Williams really hurts. A part of me would like to see you go with Preston at quarterback and go back to the pro style attack but I can see the argument to go the other direction. It will be interesting to see how you proceed going forward and how the rest of the season shapes up. I hope Davis can pick up some of the slack for the offense. That run defense was a little worrisome and could become problematic as you move into the bulk of your SEC schedule.

Hang in there and good luck against Auburn next week!

Yes, this was a very so-so performance. Too many stalled drives, and the kick return TD made the game look better than it was for us. This was a bad overall performance I thought and we were fortunate to come out with a win.

Hang in there and good luck against Auburn next week!
I can honestly say that at this very moment, I have no idea what direction I will be going. Both options are intriguing. I may just have to go into practice mode and figure out which QB "feels" like the right guy.

The run D could improve, but that 80 yard pop made things look much worse than it was. We missed a tackle at the LOS and that can't happen.

I'm a little disappointed in my own running game so far. Bernie Davis (82 ovr, 88 spd) hasn't really been able to break any big runs. The back-up RB B.J. Johnson (77 ovr, 93 spd) has made a few nice runs though. I may start re-thinking who should be at the top of the depth chart soon if things don't get better.

                    Fields

Tulane | Preston Fields named starting QB
                    Fri, 13 Sep 2019 9:31:41 -0700

                    report courtesy Erin Andrews, FOXSports.com

Erin Andrews of Fox Sports reports that Tulane head coach D. Geezy has indicated to her during a late night dinner and movie interview that redshirt senior QB Preston Fields (81 ovr, 71 spd, 82 thp, 87tha) has been named the team's starter for tomorrow night's game at Auburn, in place of injured starter Jimmy Williams (86 ovr, 89 spd, 90 thp, 86 tha). Fields, a 5th year player from Jefferson, Louisiana, has only seen action in two games in his career, both coming in the team's 2017 season during blowouts, including a performance in which he went 4 of 5 for 37 yards and 1 touchdown in the team's 48-17 home win versus Syracuse that season.

"We met as a staff late Thursday and after carefully weighing our options we have decided to go with Preston at quarterback this week and moving forward," said Geezy.

"I think by and large Preston has shown to have a much firmer grasp of the offensive playbook than Antoine Atkinson (74 ovr, 88 spd, 78 thp, 83tha) and throws the ball with a lot more touch and accuracy. In fact Fields has the highest accuracy grade on the team, including versus Jimmy. Atkinson was our #2 on the depth chart because we felt he best mimicked the style of Williams and thought it would make for a seamless transition in a spot-duty type situation.

"However what we are going to do now is sort of move back into a more traditional, pro style approach, similar to what we had the past 3 seasons with (former Tulane QB) Jamie Manning, and that requires a quarterback with a little more polish and accuracy because there will be a lot more timing-based, rhythmic passing concepts. We were really impressed this week with how Preston competed in practice, stayed late, worked with wide receivers, and he seems to have really taken the reigns, from both a leadership standpoint and from a work habit standpoint. He has been very cerebral in his time here, he's waited patiently through 4 seasons, and has now earned the opportunity."

Tulane | Back-up RB B.J. Johnson to see more playing time
                    Fri, 13 Sep 2019 9:45:41 -0700

According to team sources, redshirt senior RB B.J. Johnson (77 overall, 93 speed), who currently leads the team with 101 rushing yards on only 10 carries so far this season, is expected to see his role increased as the team. Due to his tremendous speed, the team's coaching staff views him as a potential big play threat. He is currently listed as #2 on the depth chart behind starter Bernie Davis (82 overall, 88 speed), who has struggled while gaining 98 yards on 28 carries, for an average of just 3.5 yards per carry.

Redshirt senior QB Preston Fields' first quarter 12-yard touchdown pass to freshman WR Ryan Jean made the score 10-0. It was the pair's first of four scoring hook-ups on the evening and Jean's first career touchdown.

Green Wave led 27-0 at halftime, get just enough second half offense to keep Tigers at bay | QB Fields efficient in starting debut, accounts for 5 total touchdowns, no interceptions | Team will get one final tune-up before getting into the "meat" of the schedule with road date versus Vanderbilt next on the slate

Auburn, AL -- The Tulane Green Wave, despite giving up 35 second half points to Auburn, held on for a 48-35 win Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Playing in their first game without injured starting QB Jimmy Williams, the Green Wave got a solid performance out of new starting QB Preston Fields, who finished the game 23 of 36 for 187 yards and 4 touchdowns. Fields also added a 3-yard touchdown run on a scramble late in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.

All four of Fields' touchdown passes were thrown to emerging star freshman WR Ryan Jean, who finished the day with 7 receptions for 67 yards. Jean, 6-6 211 pounds and referred to by his teammates as "Baby Megatron," leads all Green Wave receivers with 20 receptions for 298 yards through 3 games this season and has emerged as a nightmare matchup in the red zone for defensive backs.

6-6 211 pound true freshman WR Ryan Jean stole the show, hauling in 4 touchdown receptions on the evening.
The Green Wave (3-0, 2-0) got off to a very quick start. After getting a first-possession 55-yard field goal by PK Alex White to make the score 3-0 early, Fields would direct a 14-play 90-yard drive on his team's next possession, a drive that featured a 4th and 1 conversion by FB Marcus Young deep in Tigers territory. The possession would culminate with a 12-yard hook-up with Jean, to make the score 10-0 in the first quarter.

Auburn (1-2, 0-2) would have disaster strike on its next possession when QB Clay Andrews' pass was intercepted by Tulane FS Lee Palmer, setting the Wave up with possession deep in Tigers territory. Two plays later, Fields would find Jean in the end zone for a 7-yard touchdown, giving the Wave a commanding 17-0 lead.

The two would hook up again in the second quarter, this time on a 3-yard toss with 0:05 remaining in the half, giving Tulane a 27-0 halftime lead.

The Tigers would storm back in the second half behind the arm of Andrews. The redshirt freshman signal caller would throw 3 third quarter touchdowns and added a 4th in the game's final quarter, but his team would never get closer than 13 points away from overtaking Tulane on the scoreboard. Andrews finished with a game-high 341 yards and 4 touchdowns, however 3 costly interceptions doomed his team's chances, as well as a costly third quarter incomplete lateral pass, which was scooped up off the ground by Wave sophomore CB Tim Wright and returned 45 yards for a touchdown that made the score 34-7.

Tulane, nursing its comfortable lead, would churn out yardage in the fourth quarter on the ground behind the legs of RB B.J. Johnson to help run out the clock. Johnson, whose role was increased this week as previously reported, finished the game with a career-high 99 yards on 14 carries.

With his team up 48-35 in the closing moments, Jean's 11-yard reception on 3rd and 3 with two minutes to play allowed Tulane to run out the clock on kneel downs.

The victory marks Tulane head coach D. Geezy's 100th win with the Wave, giving him a 100-25 record through 9+ seasons.

"This program has so come far over the past decade, and while this will be considered by many to be an individual accomplishment, it is everything but an individual accomplishment," said Geezy.

"We've had so many special players and staff members here in the past decade that none of this would have happened without any of them, not to mention such great fan support. This win #100 is a program-wide, school-wide accomplishment, and I look forward to earning the next 100."

The Green Wave will travel to face Vanderbilt (1-2) next week on the road. The two teams met last season at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, a game the Green Wave won 37-3.

Notes: Palmer left the game in the second quarter with a strained shoulder injury and did not return. Geezy indicated after the game that the injury is not serious however and Palmer is expected to be available next week. His replacement, senior FS Curtis McKnight caught an interception on the very next play following the injury.

Just getting caught up Geezy! Congrats on win #100!

I think you made the right call going with Fields into the Auburn game, reading the N'Western game report and subsequent injury, I was hoping you would go with the redshirt Senior in a conference game on the road. Just made sense to go with the more consistent player than the athlete in that moment.

Jean is really looking like a monster early on. I have no doubt he'll do nasty things to that Vandy secondary. He can carry your offense through a brutal conference schedule and you can spread the defense out to open up your rushing game.

Gotta work with your QBs on the taking sacks lol...those negative yards are scary. Even going back to the pro style offense, maybe work in a package sub for Atkinson with the shotgun, pistol or even wildcat (if you have it in your PB).

                              Looking forward to more bro!

Congratulations on win #100!! Fields is definitely looking like the right choice and Ryan Jean is loving it. It is scary to think how good Jean is going to get during his time under head coach Geezy. I expect another thrashing next week against Vandy. Loving this!
