You guys nailed it, Hamilton being out the first half raises a lot of questions about how we can do, and how Diaco handled the case, compared to the safeties who got dismissed. I can't help but think this story won't be over after the half.

Rivero to get first career start at Boise

Believe me, this is so far off from a modern-day Rudy. Please.

Former preferred walk-on Jarrett Rivero, a 4th year junior, has been tabbed to start his first career game at Boise St. while starter David Hamilton presumably recovers from his hangover.

Hamilton was obviously suspended for the first half of #19 UConn's opener at Boise State for showing up to a meeting in February late and drunk, violating team policy, leaving the other three QB's on the roster to vie for the top backup spot.

Rivero was in a battle with true freshman Tanner Dean-Lowry for the top backup spot, however Diaco declared the race a draw, signaling an "OR" between the two on the preseason depth chart. While TDL was presumed the leader in that race, Diaco must have thought it best not to throw a true freshman into the fire in such a hostile, pressure-packed situation. One has to assume TDL is indeed the top backup and would've started if he weren't a true freshman.

While D-Ham will be eligible to return in the second half, coach Diaco may have other plans.

This is far from over. For sure.

But don't declare Rivero a modern-day Rudy. It's not even close.

Thanks very much fellas, 'preciate you posting!

psorbs, with the talent we had in 2017, I don't find it hard to believe. Marriner played next level, the defense was out of their minds in the CFP, and Shirreffs did just enough at QB. It will be another year or two before we could win big again though, we just have too many new starters now.

DippinThots__, glad to hear the praise. I'm enjoying the success I'm having here and my suddenly large legion of followers. Thanks again, and keep enjoying!

              Hamilton the Hero

Hamilton rallies UConn to 37 point second half after suspension; Huskies win 44-30 as Johnson rumbles for 4 TD's

              Crisis: Averted.

It took a 37-13 second half spread, but David Hamilton proved that he can do more than binge drink. He showed us why he has been touted as the future of UConn since his commitment in 2016.

So how bad was it before D-Ham came back from suspension in the third?

              Bad. 7 points bad.

Jarrett Rivero didn't perform badly, going 6-10, 110 yards, TD-INT, but 61 of those yards came on a pass that Rodney Reid weaved into a touchdown. The most important thing was that he couldn't move the offense into scoring position.

Rivero wasn't helped by the really crummy play in the secondary, a fixture of UConn for the past few seasons. While UConn did force a 3 and out after sacks from James Atkins and Sam Rourke, Boise started working on the second drive.

Allen Blanco caught fire, scrambling for 22 before hitting Chase Blakley 3 times and Sean Modster for an 8 yard score after a 14 yard screen.

UConn went 3 and out after, and Boise tacked on 10 more points in the first 12:44 on a 13 yard TD catch from A.J. Richardson and a 38 yard field goal from Riley Richard.

Just like that, Boise was up 17-0. Oh boy.

Luckily, UConn went into the half with something to cheer about, as Rivero hit Reid over the middle and he did the rest, Reid weaving in and out of the defense to make it a 61 yard TD catch and run.

But down 17-7.....Enter Sandman. OK, I'm ahead of myself here (and I hate the Yankees) but when D-Ham entered, as they say, the rest is history.

UConn got the ball to start the second half and Hamilton's first pass was a winner, hitting Jeff Matthews for a 20 yard gain, then followed it up with a 28 yard pass to utility lineman/tight end Steve Hashemi for 28.

Ron Johnson got his first clear running lanes of the game, punching in a 6 yard TD to pull Boise's lead to 17-14.

Looking for a big stop, UConn got it, as the Broncs were only held to a 45 yard field goal. With a TD, UConn would inherit the lead for the first time, and that is exactly what happened.

Hamilton orchestrated a long TD drive, hitting Alec Bloom for 15, scrambling for 11, hitting Matthews for 17 more, and Johnson finished it off with his second 6 yard TD, getting a nasty pancake block from Hashemi to get him there and give UConn the 21-20 lead.

Blanco answered for Boise, going 6-7 on the next drive. Unfortunately, all the Broncs had to show for was a field goal. However, they did have the 23-21 lead after 3.

UConn poured it on in the 4th, and it started after a 3 and out. UCLA transfer Marcus Bradford sent a massive blitz on Blanco, and the ensuing wobbly throw allowed Ross Sinclair to swoop in to make the INT.

Johnson finished again for UConn, taking a stretch to the right 24 yards to the house (his third TD of the day), and the two point conversion to Jon Haden made it 29-23.

The resilient Broncs kept it up though, as backup QB Alex Ogle connected with Blakley twice, and Eric Webb for 18 (with Blanco back in the game). Boise barely converted a 4th and 3 around midfield, and Blanco nearly gave the knockout punch with a 36 yard TD pass to Webb, a beautiful dime to the back of the end zone over Tashawn Coleman.

Boise had a one point lead with 4:44 remaining, and it's been almost a year since UConn had been down that much, that late.

Jeff McNeal's return to the 50 set up another go-ahead TD from Arkeel Newsome, a 10 yard stretch capped off with a Hamilton scramble and conversion.

Now with a 37-30 lead with 3:30 remaining, UConn got timely TFL's from Luke Carrezola and Atkins, and Boise punted. UConn took a commanding 44-30 lead on Johnson's 4th TD of the game and wrapped it up with an INT from utility man McNeal.

But how about Hamilton? Though no TD's, D-Ham led the offense valiantly (8-11, 119 yards), and got several timely scrambles. Not bad when he's sober. But he's our guy. This much we know.

Washington St. next, when we look to extend our win streak at the Property to ( I believe) 18 games and close to 3 years.

Kaelyn Willingham, welcome to the Property. Prepare to be destroyed.

Huge comeback for you there in the second half. Thank goodness D-Ham was sober to lead it. And what a game from Johnson! On a side note, those Boise State uniforms look awesome.

                      Oh please.

To start, I switched up sliders to the community set. Additionally, I gave up 17 points in last year's CFP to the top 2 offenses in the country.

Coming from someone who gave up no less than 60 a game at BG, I'll pass.

Yeah, TDL will be the top backup. As I mentioned in the Rivero piece, I didn't want to throw him into the fire as a true freshman in his first collegiate game. I am hopeful to get him in there at least 4 games this season to gain experience. Was hoping to redshirt him but Rivero not being good left me no choice.

I promise I'll stop making the D-Ham reference at some point, but both did play really well that second half. It's not that Hamilton did much better than Rivero, it's just the offense was more successful as a whole with him.

And I agree on the Boise uniforms. I was trying to find something cool, it was that or the orange ones.

                                1-Up

UConn pours on 34 first half points en route to 57-17 Wazzu rout; TDL shines in garbage time

                                Do we have a challenger?

Not sure, but after the 57-17 beatdown we put on Washington St. and our pal Kaelyn Willingham, but we do know that Tanner Dean-Lowry is a legit QB. And Ron Johnson is a boss.

And to be honest, it was never even close. As if you couldn't tell from the score.

David Hamilton made only one mistake early, and it gave Washington St. the early lead. After Johnson and 'Keel Newsome ran UConn downfield, Hamilton fired a lame-duck that was picked off by Ron Bowens and sent Coach Willingham's Cougs into action.

Dunston DeLuca picked up 5 on one of his very few carries on the day, followed by a read option keeper from Crest Hill for 22. Aided by a Pass Interference call from UConn, DeLuca's 14 yard plunge followed by an Elson Asa'sina 14 yard run set up a field goal from Travis Rawlson, and Wazzu got the early edge 3-0.

That was about all the chance Wazzu had though. Jeff McNeal nearly brought the ensuing return back to the house, rumbling 95 yards down to the 8. Johnson was in the house a play later, and UConn had a 7-3 lead, one they would not relinquish.

After a 3 and out from Wazzu, UConn pushed out the lead to 14-3 after a 33 yard pass from D-Ham to Ryne Thomas, and that set up a 1 yard run from big fullback Alfred Hart.

UConn broke the game wide open at the end of the first when Hill was sacked by Vontae Diggs and the ball popped free. James Atkins happened to be right there, and scooped and scored from 12 yards out, giving UConn a 21-3 lead after 1.

Newsome and Johnson finished off the next two drives (ended by a PAT miss from Mike Miller) and UConn quickly had a 34-7 lead, without Wazzu getting much of a chance.

In between the scoop and score and Johnson's second TD, Washington St. (with the exception of a 46 yard catch from Barry Ware), had negative 13 yards of offense and two incompletions, with a missed field goal and a punt.

At that point, down 34-7, Wazzu did tack on a TD on their next drive before the half, with Hill punching in the 1 yard TD on a sneak.

After a pair of INT's on hail mary attempts, UConn extended the lead to 41-7 on a TD pitch and catch from D-Ham to Rodney Reid, who punctuated the TD with a leap into the end zone, punctuating his ascent to being UConn's top receiver.

Ron Johnson runs of 11, 11 and 10 (he'd end with 27 carries, for a whopping 174 yards and 2 TD's) and 'Keel ended any chance of a comeback with a 1 yard TD.

From there, the subs came in in the middle of the third. And things got interesting.

Though D-Ham did well, Dean-Lowry smashed expectations in his first game.

He was on point, his favorite target being Kevin Lacey, and showed a scrambling ability to similar to that of Bryant Shirreffs. He did throw an INT (which I forced to stat-pad , so technically doesn't count), but he did everything perfectly. TDL threw 4-6 for 83 yards and a score, running for 34 more on 4 carries. So while D-Ham is still our starter, keep an eye out for this kid.

All in all, 57-17 is very impressive. The home win streak sits at 17, as does our overall win streak, dating back to last September. Question is, how long can we keep it going? The offense played really well, and the defense did enough.

But that's to be expected against a team that is not very good (no offense, KSW). Not a fault of the coaches, it's what is inherited.

Ranked Miami in the Orange Bowl next. Can Ron Johnson carry us to victory? Can D-Ham fend off TDL for good? How does the defense do? 18 wins?

Check us out back here next time. We all about da Uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.....UConn of course.
