When you consider a Grand Theft Auto title releases every 5 years and on average sells 35-40 million units and NBA 2K releases every year and is on pace to average 8 million units sold yearly. If you do the math then in a 5 year time frame NBA 2K is equal in sales to Grand Theft Auto. Even more interesting is the fact the NBA series may be more profitable considering the astronomical cost it takes to develop a GTA title. GTA 5 cost 265 million dollars to develop and advertise http://www.ibtimes.com/gta-5-costs-2...roduced-report.
NBA 2K series just as big as Grand Theft Auto series.

its not equivalent. GTA could pull in those numbers every year like madden and COD -
Re: NBA 2K series just as big as Grand Theft Auto series.
This is true, but I do not think it is possible to release a GTA5 like game every year. They would have to hire a hell of a lot more people and put in a ton of resources to do it. Maybe every other year if they really pushed it.Comment

The fact of the matter is GTA is not released every year. Never has, never will so it is equivalent when you look at the sales and release history.Comment

I haven't played GTA since Vice City but that's a fair assessment.
When you look at the atmosphere even BEFORE a Grand Theft Auto is about to be released, damn near the entire city is on notice. Is not the appropriate choice for kids, but I see people (specially MOTHERS) trading in their child's used game for a new released GTA title, that's just how it is.
Personally I don't mind. Not a fan of games with an ending. I remember after doing all the missions for GTA I'd get bored and trade it in for cash or in store credit you know. As far as 2K goes, only reason I'm not playing in leagues for 2k14 first gen is because, guess what, I traded the game in.
2k has set such a high standard for players and the industry. When you take a look at how close they are to their community, I mean it's almost like, this is the real NBA. While the real NBA is a theatrical razzmatazz (if you will) of the game.
I won't get into it too much as it pertains to the topic but, you hear it from the players. Paul Pierce, LeBron w/ his kids playing it, Doc Rivers sharing how Austin Rivers always fights w/ his brother over the game. Not to mention, he states that, you can tell a lot about the person just by the team they pick because he watches his team play it.
In the nitty gritty, I don't mean to make both titles into a competition as I know what the thread is intended for. But 2k to me, equates so much more than just the sport as oppose to the message GTA transcends. Aside from buying land and investing a ton of money, 2K has the community and that trumps everything.

Aren't 2K and GTA made by the same company or something to that extent?Comment

Re: NBA 2K series just as big as Grand Theft Auto series.
We'll see what the sales are like this year. 2Ks reputation has taken
a hit over the recent years because of the never ending server issues
and continued decline in online play. Their marketing has been top notch
but since 2K11 theyve mostly served us poo poo platters and expensive
coasters.
I think consumers are a little more wary then ever before especially
over all the backlash after last years release. Sports gamers started
to question the company as a whole as theyve stopped making NHL,
MLB and Tennis games.
I think the last few years that automatic trust a lot of gamers have had
has started to break a bit.
The good news is the dev team seemed to know internally that the
product that they released the last few years was substandard and
they seem to be dropping the hammer this year.
I dont think any dev team is more connected to their fans then the
NBA 2K dev team and it seems they took the backlash from the fans
seriously. Almost every announcement has been fan requested and
music to our ears.
But to many people theyve been burned by 2K marketing before so
we'll see if they are apprehensive to comeback.
For me the new classic teams sucked me in this year but if the game
is disappointing again I'll probably retire.Last edited by BMDinTDOT; 09-04-2015, 02:42 PM.Comment
