Diaco: Hamilton will not return this season

Starting QB shelved, needs shoulder surgery

It turns out David Hamilton's injury is more severe than we thought.

Hamilton, slated to miss only 6 weeks of action with a torn shoulder suffered vs. Oklahoma St. (5 games plus a bye week), will need additional surgery on his right shoulder that will sideline UConn's starting QB until February.

The news came after Hamilton's weekly check-up with Hartford doctors. He will undergo surgery on Tuesday of this week and resume rehabilitation in 2 weeks. Hamilton admitted he thought briefly about transferring last offseason, but that was only because Coach Diaco was looking into other jobs. Diaco had promised Hamilton the starting QB job for 2018. He stayed when he learned Diaco was returning.

It's been a rough season for Hamilton, who was suspended the first half of the opener against Boise State for showing up to a spring practice drunk and his play fluctuated up and down in his four games.

In the meantime, true freshman Tanner Dean-Lowry will remain the starting QB for UConn. He subbed in for Hamilton against Oklahoma St. and has started each game since.

Behind him, redshirt freshman Isaac Jackson will be #2 on the depth chart, followed by redshirt junior Jarrett Rivero.

Dean-Lowry leads UConn next week as they play 1-6 Kansas St. in Manhattan.

Haha. It's funny how bryan3169 and I thought the kid was the next big thing, and guys like you and cheese have observed that the kid's a train wreck.

I'm starting to concur with you, but if he stays at UConn past this year it's not too late to turn him around.

But is he a good enough pure athlete to be able to succeed at another position? Miller was a good quarterback, but he's just a pure athlete. He's one of those guys that can succeed anywhere on the field

Thing is, he was recruited purely as a QB, I don't know if he can be moved around and be successful elsewhere. We have some room for him in the backfield (as of right now, we only have Jeff McNeal and freshman Luke Williamson on the roster for next year), but he'd have to fend off some incoming freshmen next fall (we are pushing for 4* J.P. Byers and 3* Mike Molden for 2019, but I can't remember if either signed - we'll find out later in the year).

We have Al Hart and Jonathan Goff solidified at FB, but D-Ham could still see some time and snaps in an H-Back/Superback role. I don't know if he could play WR, but we're pretty crowded back there (we only lose Jon Haden at the end of the year), and tight end is a no-go with Ryne Thomas, Royce Archie and Ja'Montres Jones back there already.

We'll see what happens. Of course everything would be easier if Hamilton elects to transfer and he leaves TDL and Isaac Jackson to vie for the top spot. Regardless, we need another QB on the roster by the end of next year. He could just as easily win the job coming out of high school.

Man, the Big Ten schedule is not kind to Rutgers.

With Hamilton out for the season, do you feel that the offense will run less through TDL and more through Johnson and Newsome since he doesn't have as big of a cushion?

Pacific looking at reinstating football program

"10-15" FCS teams looking into moving up to FBS

Is Pacific serious about restarting their football team? Are they in good position to be moved up to FBS immediately?

With UAB's football program in serious jeopardy, FCS teams are pouncing on the chance to move up to the FBS ranks. And there are also teams that don't even exist looking for the spot.

According to NCAA president Mark Emmert, they have "about 10-15 interested FCS teams" looking to move into College Football's premier division, the FBS.

Among the interested include the Pacific Tigers, who were in the Big West until shutting down the football program in 1995.

Pacific A.D. Ted Leland has made it no secret he wants Tigers football back -- soon.

NCAA president Mark Emmert has indicated he has "10 to 15" universities interested in elevating their programs to the premier level of College Football, the FBS. Georgia Southern, Appalachian State, North Dakota State, Montana and Abilene Christian are among those interested, with an undisclosed number of others. However, all would have to pay steep fees for moving up and to upgrade stadiums to fit NCAA's capacity limitations, which set the minimum at 30,000.

The NCAA says that any team moving up is completely dependent on UAB's status, however.

As of October 12 there had been no updates on UAB. We will keep you posted when any news about their situation becomes available.

Yeah it hasn't been very good lately. Michigan and Ohio St. are both under .500 right now, so that in itself should explain the strength of the conference. Purdue is leading their division lol.

I think our offense will be dictated by the O-Line going forward. I'd love to go hard on the run game as we did last year and I'd love to have Johnson and 'Keel split carries the rest of the way, but if the line can't open up holes for them, (especially Johnson being a straight line runner) I may be forced to use TDL and his mobility a little more.

It's been completely perplexing to me as to why the line has been subpar this year, but I have to work within their limits.

                  Thanks for the great question!

Thank you, RT. As it turns out I've inspired a lot of people for their 'chises, and that is fantastic to see that some stats nerd in the middle of nowhere can really make a difference.

I'm actually going to be overhauling the Around the NCAA graphics (hopefully) for next season and try to make it more streamlined. I know they say if it isn't broken, don't fix it, but I'd like to mix things up a bit. So we'll see what becomes of that.

I always like running ahead. I knew if I finished this season before I was back in school, I'd give myself more time to get caught up whenever I had a few minutes. Problem is, our PC with the software for the editor on it crapped out last week right in the middle of the playoffs (semis done, need to set up the NCG). Hopefully that doesn't hold me up too much.

                          Bluebonnet Bowl returning to Houston

After 30 years, one of college football's most iconic and classic bowl games is returning.

The Houston Chronicle has confirmed that the AdvocareV100 Bowl will be officially renamed the Phillips 66 Bluebonnet Bowl in a sponsorship deal starting this year and running through 2021. Additionally, NRG Stadium (formerly Reliant, home of the Houston Texans), will continue to oversee operations of the game, which they have done since the closing of the Houston Bowl after 2005.

Tie-ins indicate that a Big 12/Texas team will face a Big 10 team, an SEC team or BYU unless no teams are eligible, in which case another at-large will be selected.

The original Bluebonnet Bowl was played in the old Astrodome between 1959 and 1987, and was replaced 13 years later with the inaugural Houston Bowl in 2000. The Texas Bowl replaced it in 2006.

The Texas Bowl has had the luxury of selling out their tickets for the game in 3 of the last 4 seasons, including a ranked matchup between Michigan and BYU, which Michigan won 38-24.

UConn, with backup QB, escapes disaster against 1-win Kansas St.

Just ignore the attribute bars on the top of the pics. I messed that up.

                            What on earth happened here?

Raise your hand if you were among the droves of fans who expected #8 UConn to walk into Snyder Family Stadium and absolutely shred 1-6 Kansas State. I guess we all should've known better.

Fighting for their season, Kansas State gave the Huskies one of their most competitive games so far in 2018, and in losing by 4 points nearly knocked UConn out of the college football playoff race.

K-State had the edge the entire first half. On their opening drive, Brian Glastele did a bit of everything, picking up big gains and big first downs to keep the drive moving. Drew Montgomery's 23 yard pass to Cade Parrish helped the Wildcats tack on a field goal to take the first 3 points of the game.

UConn responded with a scoring drive of their own. Arkeel Newsome reeled off a marvelous 26 yard carry that propelled the drive, juking out a pair of K-State defenders and showing his stiff arm. After picking up 8 for another first down a few plays later, Tanner Dean-Lowry fired a strike to Jeff Matthews for 17 and TDL finished with a 5 yard scramble TD.

Backup Vince Haston got into the action for K-State on the ensuing TD drive, violently stiff arming Derek Robinson on his way to a 18 yard TD and a 10-7 KSU lead.

Into the second quarter, UConn took the lead for a while after a long 12 play drive. Rashad Harris caught two big passes for 14 and 23, and TDL finished with a 1 yard flip to Ron Johnson for the go-ahead TD, 14-10.

UConn had a chance to pad the lead going into the half after Luke Carrezola destroyed Glastele on a run straight up the middle, and Sammie Leonard recovered. From their own 26 yard line, TDL orchestrated a drive that got all the way to the K-State 26. However, an errant pass with 25 seconds left (off balance, never had a chance), was picked off by Vince Trayle and brought back 74 yards for a TD to give the Wildcats the edge at the half 17-14.

As a result, TDL limped to the sideline with what would turn out to be a pectoral strain, rendering him useless for the rest of the afternoon.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the UConn family Isaac Jackson. The redshirt freshman out of Georgia was the lesser of the two QB's recruited in 2016 (the better being one David Hamilton), but he had played well enough in practice to be elevated to #2 over Jarrett Rivero.

Jackson missed his first two throws, but recovered, hitting Harris for identical 18 yard gains and culminating in a Johnson 18 yard misdirection that went for a TD and the UConn lead 21-17. They would keep it for good.

K-State pushed a field goal wide left, and though Blaire Whitt picked off Jackson (accidentally, I pushed the wrong button and lobbed it no less), K-State had a chance to take the lead with 5 minutes remaining.

Montgomery hit Phallen Landrum for a 35 yard gain after Anthony Watkins overpursued, Parrish picked up a first down on a WR Sweep, and Glastele moved K-State inside the 25 yard line with a big gain of 14. However, their drive stalled.

A shovel option was knocked back two yards. Montgomery got 2 on a QB power. A screen was overthrown. And the nail in that drive was Glastele tripping over himself (wrapped up by freshman Brett Lowery) for a 3 yard loss on 4th and long.

K-State would prevent UConn from moving again, and that kept them in the game. With 2 minutes remaining, Montgomery had another chance to lead the Wildcats to victory. Starting from their own 43 after a UConn punt, Montgomery hit Jason Satterfield for 12, and Parrish for 11 over Watkins.

Montgomery would make a fatal mistake moments later, going deep to the left for the third straight play. Watkins got his revenge as he got in front of Parrish, and promptly intercepted Montgomery to put the game on ice and preserve a 21-17 win.

Narrow indeed, but hey, a win's a win. Give it up for I-Jax for leading the winning TD drive and the senior Watkins for picking off the pass to avoid disaster. I know we were down our starting QB, but if we don't pick up the slack on offense, we could be in trouble moving forward. 'Till then, we're still alive in the College Football Playoff chase. Again. Back to back? Maybe. See you back at the Property for Iowa State next week.
