Well, the server infrastructure is probably the thing they are least able to test and simulate, relative to the other stuff.
Still, there's no excuse for their year on year failure here. Just because there are no perfect go live tests, there are simulation processes that can come close. They should have the authentication and handshaking technology interfacing with the new consoles pretty much worked out by year 3, too. Cloud technology is no longer new. They just don't invest enough in server side assets, asset management, redundancy and failover every year.
